Marijuana is a green or brown mix of preserved, crushed leaves from the marijuana plant. A psychoactive drug, marijuana contains fifty-percent more tar than tobacco. Smoking the harmful plant can damage the brain, lungs, and the male reproductive system and may escalate the effects of epilepsy and psychosis (Kahler, 1988). Within campus colleges and universities, there are a lot of students who are using marijuana recreationally. Long-term marijuana use can induce negative effects on short-term memory, concentration, attention span, motivation, and problem solving, which clearly interfere with learning. Tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in marijuana, can reinforce dependence on the drug and on other addictive drugs (Joffe & Yancy, 2004, p. e632). This is a bad influence on the majority of students who are not studying in the college or university for such purposes. Legalizing marijuana will lead to an increase in drug users and addicts and will surely send the message that it is okay to use psychoactive drugs. This is why the government should not legalize marijuana. The first reason that the government should not legalize marijuana is that doing so will lead to an increase in drug users and addicts. From a periodic survey conducted, there were many psychopharmacologic properties learned about marijuana. Scientists have shown that the emotional stress caused by withdrawal from marijuana is linked to corticotrophin-releasing factor, the same brain chemical that has been linked to anxiety and stress during opiate, alcohol, and cocaine withdrawal (Joffe & Yancy, 2004, p. e632). This could create a dependence on such harder drugs. This highly popular program is effective in reducing certain preconceived notions about drug-use in younger adolescence. Marijuana has been around for decades. It was ingrained into the culture of America as early as the Jamestown era. Marijuana is the most habitually used illegal drug in the U.S. and the world, and was an absolute medicine until it was federally criminalized in 1937. It is imperative that marijuana should be legally regulated as it can be of great harm to the human body in a number of ways. It can also provoke a number of drug addicts and express the message that it is okay to use psychoactive drugs. Currently, penalties are given based on the amount of marijuana possessed. Eventually, the narcotic will be completely diminished from society.
