Managers need to be self assured and confident in taking on the lead role by following through with directives and being able to give directives. Managers need to have a strong personality and assertion when the opportunity arises. Being able to come together with upper management shows strength. Excellent coaching abilities are necessary because that will be a large portion of the duties. Most managers are taught to focus on results more than methods. Communication and dialogue are the most effective methods to have in order to know what is going on in cross-cultural and diverse environments. Keeping a successful business depends on the quality of communication and understanding that exists between executives, managers, supervisors, other colleagues, and customers. Being a good communicator is one of the most essential skills a manager can possess both professionally and personally. In fact, organizations could not exist without some form of effective communication (McShane & Von Glinow, 2015, p. 254). The ability to share an idea by forming a thought in your mind, encoding that message, and transmitting the message via a chosen channel is only part of the process. For good communication to exist, the message needs to be heard. This happens when the receiver realizes a message is being sent through all the noise, decodes it, and understands it. A communication that is received and understood should generate an action. Feedback helps clarify the message between the sender and receiver (McShane & Von Glinow, 2015, pp. 255-256).
In Rane’s article, “Good Listening Skills Make Efficient Business Sense” the author looks at way effective listening is just as important to the communication process as speech. Rane points out there is distinct difference between hearing and listening; hearing is simply “a physical and passive activity, whereas listening is necessarily a mental activity and hence it is active in nature…” (2011, p. 44). While a person can continuously hear what another person is saying, in order for an individual to truly hear what another is saying, they need to be actively engaged in the communication process (Rane, 2011). First, I believe a leader needs to feed his/her people and let them grow. The leader must have an interest in what happens in the lives of people and have genuine interest in the individual employees: who they are and what they want. Ethics should be the bed from which you operate, first you have to give respect , in order to get it. High-quality management of people leads to longer employment , which leads to confidence , which leads to more work. A leader should thus provide a pleasant and friendly environment. I believe that the more fun you can make it for your employees to work, the more profit you will make. The real challenge is the willingness to bet on the long run and not get carried away by short-term pressure.

Skills without knowledge, appropriate attitude and understanding will not equate to competency (Watson, 2002).
Communication is a key in every setting from home, work and the community. Communication encompasses written, oral, visual, digital and non-verbal communication within each context. Successful in-person communication skills are critical when dealing with other individuals and this involves speaking, listening, and dealing with conflict. To solve conflict communication needs to be clear, concise and delivered in such a way so as to not offend either party, thus further inviting additional conflict. (Wilmot & Hocker, 2011 p.144) advises that developing a repertoire of diverse styles and tactics may require some stretching of one’s comfort zone.
It is necessary for these managers to assure that their employees know what is expected of them. They also need to effectively communicate the company goals and strategies in addition to frequently giving feedback to their employees. What qualities, characteristics, or aspects of a person qualifies them to be an effective manager? While there are infinite choices that will answer this question, Huband defines a superior manager as being one that “creates a work environment conducive to achieving the goals of the organization. These goals may be corporate goals or accounting department goals, but, in either case, the same principles are employed to achieve them,” (Huband, 1992). The characteristics that make up this work environment vary from communicating to motivating to having faith in their employees. Effective managers also treat each of their employees and colleagues equally and with the respect they deserve.
One thing a successful company has is a great staff filled with people in working in different areas, all doing their best to keep the business moving forward. Like an army, the staff does need a leader, or maybe a few, to make sure that everyone in the business is organized, informed and all moving toward the goal of the company. In this paper I will explain what it takes to be a good leader and manager, provide a role model of an organization with good leadership and management skills, and describe what the organization does that makes them successful.
