In the last 14 years the number of internet users has increased by a whopping 566% and 2,495,518,376 people in this world have access to the internet. 70% of them use the internet on a daily basis. On average that 70% will spend 3.2 hours daily on social media, such as Instagram, Tumblr, Google+ and YouTube.

The Internet is filled with numerous websites, but social networking websites are the favorites among the United States citizens. The United States spends a generous 20% of time on social networking websites on the computer and 30% on mobile devices (Popkin). As of 2009, the United States had 245 million Internet users and it has only increased (United States). It is clear that it is not only the US that uses the Internet or social networking websites. A survey conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project shows that as of September 2013, 86% of American adults use the Internet, up from 14% in 1995 (“ Pew Internet and American Life Project”).

A recent study by Pew Research found sixty-seven percent of people on the Internet use social media, such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, and Instagram (Widrich, 2013). The majority of social media users are women aged 30 and under who live in cities and attended college (Widrich). The majority of these women spend an average of three hours on the Internet.
