Actions that people take not only affect them but also affect the people closest to them. In The Scarlet Letter Pearl and Hester, Chillingworth and Dimmesdale are all affect by the sin of adultery committed by Hester. This sin has a different amount of impact emotional, physical, and mental impact on each character.

Hester Prynne was impacted most out of all of the characters; she was the adulteress. She has to deal with public humiliation and the lingering remembrance of the sin she committed. “She seemed absolutely hidden behind it” (Hawthorne 102) and that is what everyone sees besides her actually personality. She learns from her mistake by saying “I can teach my Pearl what I have learned from this!"(Hawthorne 37) She had changed a lot do to the public embarrassment she had become so familiar with "Those who had before known her, and had expected to behold her dimmed and obscure by a disastrous could, were astonished even startled, to perceive now her beauty shone out and made a halo of the misfortune and ignominy in which was enveloped"(Hawthorne 20)
