Many documents have been made in history; some being more famous than others, such as The Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. One of the most famous documents in history, has been called the “Origin of Liberty” and, to an extent “The Bible of Liberty”. It is the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta changed history forever, limiting the powers of English royalty and being an influence for liberty, freedom, and equality ever since. It had a different meaning when it was sealed in 1215, though. At first, the Magna Carta was just to keep King John of England, ruler of the time, in check from destroying England’s economy. The roots of the Magna Carta started to come about over 800 years ago in 1199.
King John was crowned King of England in May, 1199 at the age of 33. Early on in his reign, he was successful in capturing northern French territories in 1202 and 1203. In 1204, however, due to lack of food to support his army, King Phillip of France took back the rich northern French territories from King John. Over the next decade, King John tried to take back the French territories he once had, especially Normandy, for their rich resources. He had to raise taxes for mercenary armies to provide more troops for his war against France. The higher taxes angered many people, especially those who couldn’t afford the already high taxes which were in place from the previous rulers.
The high taxes weren’t all that angered the people of England, though. During his reign, John also quarreled with the Catholic Church many times. King John wanted the bishop of England to be someone who would be on his side so that he could be in control of the Catholic Church. He wanted to be in control of the Catholic Church because the Catholic Church w...

Turner, Ralph V. "The Meaning of Magna Carta since 1215: Ralph V. Turner Considers How and Why Magna Carta Became a Beacon of Liberty in Britain And, Increasingly, in the United States." History Today. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2014.
Annotation: The Magna Carta has given liberty to the Barons, and later the people, of England from the fierce and unfair ruling. One of the most major problems was high taxation. The Magna Carta has become one of the most important items in England and has increased in influence severely in the United States, being an influence for the United State's most important documents. It helped me find out what the cause and alterations of the Magna Carta were after 1215.
The framers looked at documents from the English government, such as the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights, to sculpt their government. The Magna Carta limited the king’s power and stated that citizens had certain rights. This meant that the king had to recognise the citizen’s rights, and couldn’t imprisoned or arrest citizens unless convicted of a crime, and they had legal rights, and could have a trial by jury. The Magna Carta is significant because it was one of the most important democratic documents in history. It was important because it said that everybody was subject to the law, unlike a dictatorship, oligarchy, or monarchy. It set up a parliamentary democracy in England, and strongly influenced the American Bill of Rights. Likewise, the English Bill of Rights further restricted the powers of the king. The English Bill of Rights gave everybody certain rights; of these where were the right to trial by jury, no unusual, cruel, or unjust punishments, the right to own a gun, and citizens had to be charged with a crime before they could be sent to prison. The English Bill of Rights was influential to the American Constitution, because in the Constitution, the framers included a Bill of Rights outlining the rights of all citizens. The American Bill of Rights was heavily influenced by the English Bill of Rights. Of these were the right to bear arms, the right to a fair trial, and citizens couldn’t be put in jail without being charged with a

The Magna Carta was used to put the barons at ease with the king. The Magna Carta was written in 1215 A.D. (167). At the time, King John of England was having trouble with his unruly barons (167). On the surface, it seems that King John was simply trying to give the people some freedoms. From the document, it can be said that the king had been unjustly taking from whom he ruled. “ Neither we, nor our Bailiffs of ours, will take another man’s wood, for our castles or other uses, unless by the consent of him whom the wood belongs”(169). Obviously, that concession would not have been included had not the king or his men been taking wood without consent. The Magna Carta however, is not important for the exact rules or concessions written in it but for other reasons that lie under the surface. The reasons are: The law is even above the king; and the king can be forcefully compelled to obey the law. The most important part of the Magna Carta is the last concession. Summarized, it states that the free people and their kin have the stated rights and they have them forever. No longer can the king take the rights stated in the Magna Carta from the people and no longer can the king be unaware of the law.
The boasted Magna Charta of England, by its very nature, was too complex. Paine lectured that a structure so intricate would only allocate an entire nation to suffer without the country being able to find error in itself. The British hailed their parliamentary system as being the most wonderful, but Paine declared that it was nothing more than the remains of a tyranny. In Paine’s scrutiny Great Britain’s government was made worse by the monarchical king and aristocratical peers whom are designated by heredity. Bequeathed succession only opened the door to foolish, wicked, and improper headship. The British enunciated the House of Commons, in the English Constitution, created a unity to the ordained ruling society and the general population. Conversely, Thomas Paine contended that habitual validation of each component of British foundat...
It should be noted that similarities can be identified between the US Constitution and the Magna Carta. One similarity of course the fact that the Magna Carta was an agreement which put limits on the exercise of power by a Monarch Government. Many of the founding fathers felt that the new US Constitution should have declarations similar to the Magna Carta limiting the power of the federal government in reference to its citizens, therefore a set of amendments later known as the Bill of Rights, was also drafted during the process of ratifying the Constitution. Many of these individual rights including trial by jury, due process of law and freedom from cruel and unusual punishments, were all long accepted rights and norms established by the Magna
The Magna Carta, a document signed almost eight hundred years ago, paved the way for the rights of citizens. Many of these rights stated in the Magna Carta shaped the formation of other Governments, such as the American Government. Those rights are ideas that many citizens take for granted today. The Magna Carta is a prime example of Rights and Responsibilities in History because of the ideas and laws it placed in England during the time. Many of these ideas are still carried and used in not only England, but the majority of Europe and other World Powers today.
Early in British history, the establishment of the Magna Carta gave its citizens basic human rights such as the right to a fair trial by jury in circumstances of accused misdemeanor. However, this document allowed “general warrant[s which gave consent to arrest accused criminals but did not have limitations on their search or seizure and that] did not expire until t...
During this time, the Magna Carta was written and signed. This limited the power of the king and he had to earn approval by the lords before he could make a decision. It also made it so a law can only be passed if it doesn’t go against the Magna Carta. It also implies religion by helping with giving the Church full rights that allows
“When the long tally is added, it will be seen that the British nation and the English-speaking world owe far more to the vices of John than to the labours of virtuous sovereigns”
(Basil Montagu) These rights are the true meaning of being the freest member in a nation like Great Britain but these common-law rights were abused by King George III. Documents like the Magna Charta, Habeas Corpus Act, the Bill of rights, and the Act of Settlement establish in a document what the rights of the Englishmen truly represent. These documents consist of the intangible rights that every Englishmen has and they include the rights to personal security, personal liberty, and lastly private property. But these are not the only three that set the individual Englishmen apart. Then main right that was abused by King George III was the right to petition the King of the Parliament (pg. 207). These attainable rights were given to every Englishmen and taken away by King George III, being the tyrant that he
King John did not fear God nor respect men. His punishments were cruel, starvation of children and crushing of old men and no woman was safe. Driven to despair, John subjects would impose a document on him called the Magna Carta guaranteeing of their own rights. John refusal to abide by it finally drove the people to rebellion. He made so many so fed up and angry, ashamed humiliated until they chose to rebel which was an awful shame. King John was born in Oxford, the fourth and the youngest of King Henry the second. A family of powerful nobles. They Controlled all of the England and vast territories towards
The Magna Carta was the first document in which English subjects to force English king into power; granting and protecting the subjects’ rights. This was important since the king at the time could do anything that he so desired. However, in practice, this English legal charter did not limit the king’s power. The Magna Carta is the beginnings of American freedom. It is also the foundation of the American Constitution, reflecting English freedom and the power of the English government.
This next one is not really meant for literature, it was actually written for a peace treaty between King John of England and a group of rebel barons. It was originally known as the Magna Carta Libertatum. According to this charter, it guarantees protection of the church rights, as well as the protection for the said barons from illegal imprisonment. King John was actually considered to be a terrible king, hence why the barons are against him. One of the reasons is that the King raised his taxes without asking the nobles and it is actually against the law of England.
King John also angered the Church of England by acting against customs and the Popes wishes. He appointed someone other than the Pope’s choice to be the archbishop of Canterbury. When King John did this he angered the Pope and caused many problems. King John gave the Pope the Kingdom of England and paid him rent to continue to stay there in order to be back on the Pope’s good side. When King John did this he angered the Baro...
After signing this document that established the rights, responsibilities and obligations of the king, he became more aware of the way he ruled. The Magna Carta also is considered the first step to a democratic government, since everyone had similar rights and responsibilities during the time that it was put into effect, and even though this document is not used anymore, it influenced the way democracy works in modern
