In a traditional approach teachers have limited interaction with students to necessary feedback. Technology being implemented in classrooms can have a positive effect on teachers and students. Teachers can provide the assign homework, quizzes, test and discussions. Teachers can monitor and provide instant feedback and grades to their students. Students can benefit with technology in the classroom by participating in the class discussions. There are students that are normally shy in an open discussion environment, technology bridges the gap so all students can participate with confidence. The most important benefit for teachers and students relationships would be interaction with the teacher. By this students that email a question or during collaboration can receive an instant answer and expectations can be emailed to each student. Integration of technology can provide students with real world experience. In today’s curriculum students need to be efficient in computers skills and composition to conquer the academic barriers of language arts. “Weak composition and computer skills may conspire to obstruct academic achievement. Unless remediation attends to this modern spate of literacy under preparedness, student outcomes are unlikely to improve. (Relles & Tierney, 2013) Students need to be prepared for success in composition and computer skills, we as teachers need to provide the necessary tools at an early age for their success. Students are exposed to technology in almost every aspect of their lives.
The Net Generation is more prepared and has the knowledge to use technology not only in their everyday lives. Technology has had an impact on our society and educational system. Despite the advances in technology and the ability to enhance learning environments to better prepare our students. The integration of technology has been a slow process in our classrooms. “Technology has provided the opportunity to create an entirely new learning environment; it has significantly increased the range and sophistication of possible classroom activities” (Hawkins 1997). The vast majority of youths today, grow up with computers and encounter some form of digital learning (Kolikant, 2009). The idea that has had the most impact is that the technology today will be outpaced by the next generation. Most of the technology seen today will never be used by an infant when he reaches school age.
The late 1980’s ushered in a period of change in the American educational context, with a major focus on integrating technology in P-12 classrooms (Dwyer, Ringstaff, & Sandholtz, 1990). Several authors credit this continued use to the belief that technology integration supports philosophies of instruction that perceive each student as a unique learner, thereby aiding in the transformation of teacher-centered classrooms into student-centered settings (Mowre-Popiel, Pollard, & Pollard, 1994; Bork, 1997).
As I reflect on EDUC 6715: New and Emerging Technologies, I have learned effective and efficient ways of incorporating technology in the classroom. This course has helped broaden my knowledge on how to use the various technological devices to facilitate learning. As I look back on this course, I realized that technology is constantly evolving and transforming into newer technologies. It has been a delightful learning experience that provided me support on obtaining, adopting, and applying technology that will help to transform my classroom, school and community. This course has been instrumental in helping me to view technology as a tool, which will revolutionize education. Integrating technology requires a comprehensive knowledge of curriculum and content standards and the ways that technology can maximize student learning. In my classroom, I strive to have students using technology as a natural part of their learning experience. By teaching technology concurrently with content, I’ve observed my students making parallel gains in technology skills and knowledge.
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. Research has shown that although technology can increase academic opportunities among all students, many teachers neither use it for instruction nor integrate it into curriculum (Bauer and Kenton, 2005). Access to technology in schools has steadily increased, however classrooms have not grown at the same rate in their level of technology integration (Belland 2009). Although there are numerous barriers thought to prevent effective use of technology integration such as lack of time and resources, and teacher skill (Bauer and Kenton, 2005) and school culture (Zhao, Pugh, Sheldon, & Byers, 2002), much research has shown that the greatest barrier is the teacher’s beliefs (Ertmer, 2005), and their willingness to employ technology in teaching and student-centered learning (Teo, 2010). Today’s students are inundated with technology almost every minute of their lives. They are constantly glued to their smartphones, using them for texting, messaging, web surfing, snap chatting, listening to music, and, sometimes, actually talking on the phone. When they are not on their phones, they can be found on their video gaming devices, playing games with children, teens and adults from around the world. Affluent American teens have laptops, iPads or other tablets, iWatches or any number of devices to compliment the constant technological high they seem to need at all times, yet for some reason, integrating technology into the classroom, in a productive way, has been a challenge. According to a recent study by the U.S. Department of Education, despite access to funding and equipment, less than 35% of teachers have integrated technology in their instruction at the very least, on a weekly basis. (U.S. Department of Education, 2008) Research has shown that teachers’ beliefs, comfort level and readiness to use technology play a crucial role in its implementation within a school setting. Other concerns such as technological literacy and perceived usefulness of technology for student learning can dictate its use, or lack thereof. “Educators are urged to incorporate technology into instruction, but the effectiveness of educational technology is determined by teachers’ readiness to use it, not by its mere presence in the classroom.” (Jones, 2001) Much research has been done regarding the lack of technology implementation in schools. The common thread is the inability of connection for teachers between technology tools, and how they impact student learning.
The education world has been greatly influenced by rapidly changing technology and the increasing availability of information. Schools have advanced by leaps and bounds when it comes to incorporating technology into the learning environment, however, many more advances need to be made. In all areas of the country, educators are trying to help students keep up with technology, but there are more changes that are essential for preparing the next generation for the future.
Technology has many different effects on education, one of them being enhancing the students learning. Technology may enhance the students learning and may assist most students in achieving their academic standards. When technology and appropriate teaching methods are combined, technology may increase the academic achievement. Positive effects have been found in all major subject areas, from preschool to higher education, both regular and special needs students. Educational technology has been found to have a positive effect on a student’s attitude toward learning and on self-concepts. The introduction of technology into the learning environment has allowed the learning to be more student-centered, to encourage group learning, and helps to stimulate an increase in the student-teacher interaction. Technology has shown a shift from a focus on a student’s memorization to their problem solving. Through technology’s use, learning opportunities have become unrestricted by time or place, allowing lifelong learning. Student use of technology through communications can also help to enhance access to a career and continued education. Whether technological integration has positive or negative impacts on teaching and learning has been paid increasing attention and a numerous research has done to explore the issue. Regarding the issue, the question of if training teachers in the use of technology in classrooms contributes to students’ outcomes is still an endless argument. This essay will explain two reasons why such training brings about positive academic achievements for learners and a number of training guidelines that can be followed.
As facilitators of learning, our classrooms are filled with students who are comprised of generation X’ers and Millenial’s. We must be conscious to structure our lessons and approaches so that we can present content in the most effective manner. Technology, in regards to principles of teaching, challenges the teacher to not only learn what the technology is all about, but to learn to integrate it effectively within the context of their individual classrooms. Teachers in classrooms across the nation struggle with computer technology, the many features, and the never-ending cycle of new devices that are bought into their classrooms daily. Because of the lack of training and severe levels of discomfort, teachers have developed a negative disposition towards the use of technology when it applying it to principle. Recognizing the noted factors, it can be resolved that we do live in an interactive world. Our job is to effectively integrate the technology in such a way that it supports, guides, and enhances learning for all parties involved.
