Prior to this assignment I had heard about LinkedIn many times but for some reason never created a profile. However, after being required to create a LinkedIn account I now realize the vast potential that it has to offer. For starters, it is one of the fastest growing social media platforms in the world. “LinkedIn’s global network adds approximately one new member every second” (Eyres, 2009). Secondly, it provides people the opportunity to network with professionals who may work in the same field as you or people who have similar skills. Your profile can be viewed by virtually anyone, which would be impossible to do with a traditional hardcopy resume. For example, one person who viewed my profile works as a marketer in Ottawa, Canada. Simply put, this social media platform is a fantastic way to “get your name out there” so to say. After creating my profile I decided to join a group called Social Media Marketing. It is a very active group with over 800,000 members and it took about one day for me to be accepted into the group. Question topics range widely from what type of impact social media has on marketing or the do’s and don’ts of online job surveys, just to name a few. One question that intrigued me read; choose one word to describe your brand, I answered “innovative”. My comment received one like from James Scott, an Executive Project Manager at Cloud Technology. Simply by commenting on these questions is a great way to generate awareness of your profile. Anyone who sees your comment could decide to then view your profile which is the ultimate goal for using this website. This type of constant interaction, in my opinion is LinkedIn’s greatest strength. I found these group questions to be very interesting and will definitely... ... middle of paper ... ...ist. In the past few years, social media has evolved from just being a basic tool for collaborative creation and the sharing of content to becoming an important part of the present media landscape (Evans & Bratton, 2008; Weinberg, 2009). From a business perspective, companies are actively leveraging social media to create brand communities and crowd sourcing models, gain consumer insights, enhance product/brand awareness, improve search engine optimization efforts, reduce customer acquisition and service costs, and optimize overall marketing and communication efforts (Weinberg, 2009). This chapter seeks to review literature that has been propounded by past and present researchers in the field of social media, its use in the marketing communications mix and their various areas of convergence in this field of study.
The title of the article “How to Get a Job at Google” pulls his audience into reading the article. Many people would like to know how they could get a job at one of the most successful companies out there. However, that is not what the article is about. Friedman’s interview with Bock does tell his audience what qualities Google looks at when hiring people, but Friedman’s main purpose is to persuade his audience that having these qualities are important in any job and are what many employers are looking for. The words that Friedman uses in the article make it informal and more appealing to his audience of high school and college students. He chooses to include quotes with crass statements, such as “‘worthless,’” “‘don’t care,’” and “‘argue like hell.’” He also decides to write his article in a tone that is unrefined, which makes the article a simple read. By using only Bock as a credible source and not incorporating other credible individuals in this subject area, helps Friedman make his article easy to understand and simple to read, therefore, making it pleasing to his audience. The article topic itself is thought provoking and reaches those who are open-minded to a different perspective on the qualifications of a job applicant divergent from the more traditional

The way future candidates view social media has evolved drastically over the past ten years as technology has evolved. From websites like LinkedIn to Twitter, each website provides a unique opportunity for employers to view a future candidate. According to Media Bistro/Infographic, “92%of companies” use social media as an initial step to recruit future candidates. Another statistic Media Bistro/Infographic provides is that 73% of employees hire using social media and 20% of employers say it takes less time to hire via social media. What do these small statistics mean? Majority of the time if recruiters use social media, it is like an extra step to background checks and screenings before the interviews. Social Media allows for employers to have additional information of their prospective candidate before hiring. These statistics show that employers look at a person’s profile based on the information that is public or accessible; yet the employer uses that decision to hire the future candidate. Based on what a person post, there are heavy consequenc...

Marketing is a fundamental aspect of all businesses, whether they are set out to make a profit, or charitable organisations - they will have to carry out marketing research of some description. It has been described as being, “the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably.” (Chartered Institute of Marketing) This essay will explore the role of marketing in a marketing oriented business and different aspects of the external environment that a smartphone company should be aware of. The points raised throughout will be supported using relevant journals, textbooks and newspaper articles.
Social networks are increasing dramatically every year. Employers are turning to social networks because it is a tool to screen job applicant’s profiles. According to a survey conducted by jobvite.com (2013), 94 % of employers use social media profiles to recruit job applicants. This trend assists the applicants and recruiters. Job applicants should be judged by their social network profiles because social media give positive image about the candidate, prove the information in the resume, and help to identify if the person fits the culture of the company or not.
Platforms such as Facebook and Twitter allow users to access company information, photos and employees as well as ask questions and express personal experiences with the company. It also allows potential employees to understand the vibe of the organization and gain a deeper and more personal understanding than a website. However, with social media, it is important to not ove...
