Throughout the 20th century, certain individuals have left a profound impact on the lives of countless people. One such person was Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa, born Agnes Bojaxhiu had many different influences that led to her establishing the missionaries of charity which directed her into becoming the speaker for the poor around the world. Because of the aforementioned facts and many others, Mother Teresa stands as one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century because of her unwavering commitment to aiding those in need, which makes her an ideal example of a hero according to the quote by Robert F. Kennedy “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope.
Many different people and events influenced Mother Teresa to becoming a figurehead of charity around the globe but one of the first were her parents. Mother Teresa’s father was wealthy so Mother Teresa’s mother would bring her along to distribute supplies such as food, medicine, clothes, and money to the poor in the cities’ worst neighborhoods. Mother Teresa’s parents would make sure to give anybody who asked food and money. When her father died expectantly, Mother Teresa became more religious and she started spending more and more of her free time in the church. Every year Mother Teresa’s family made the pilgrimage to pray at the statue of the Madonna of Letnice. At the age of twelve while she was praying she heard the voice of God calling her to Him and to the service of her neighbors.
To answer God’s calling Mother Teresa decided to become a nun when she got older. In church one day she saw pictures of starving families in small cities around India. She consulted the Father for adv...

...other Teresa had become a leader in Calcutta. Films were soon made on her charitable efforts and she became known worldwide. Using this newfound fame, Mother Teresa spoke to world leaders on behalf of the poor in their respective countries. Most of them fulfilled her request and promised to do everything possible to provide help. Once she started speaking on behalf of the poor she fulfilled the middle part of Robert F. Kennedy’s definition of a hero, “to stand up for the lot of others”.
In the 1980’s, Mother Teresa continued to be an advocate for those in need and through her deteriorating health, still helping poor people around the globe. By the time of her death in 1997, there were over four thousand missionary of charity sisters in six hundred and ten centers in one hundred and twenty three countries around the world who continue to help people every day.
From quite a young age, when many people do not know what they are doing with their lives, Mary had already decided that she wanted to be a nun and help people as much as she could, she wanted to help the poor and less fortunate than her. Mary worked with people and children and ...
She went around the world helping those in need, and created Missionaries to Charity. This group runs homes for people dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis. They also have soup kitchens, dispensaries and mobile clinics, children's and family counseling programs, orphanages, and schools. In these places, she spread the word of God, and show how a true disciple of Jesus would act. Two virtues that stand out in Saint Teresa are humbleness and charity. She demonstrated and practiced these virtues by giving and helping others. She visited families, helped children, cared for elderly people, and nursed some dying of hunger, tuberculosis, and other sicknesses. When others didn't accept, receive, or help those in need, Saint Teresa did. I admire her greatly for these acts of selflessness, humbleness, and charity. Additionally, what I find most interesting about Saint Teresa's life is how Jesus called her to serve on September 10, 1946 during a train ride for her annual retreat. On that day, Jesus revealed His pain at the human neglect of the poor, His sorrow at their ignorance of Him, and His yearning desire for their love. Jesus himself asked Saint Teresa to establish a religious community dedicated to the service of the poor. From that day onward, Saint Teresa followed the plan God had made for her, and did it
Without doubt, Helen Keller is now a household name in nearly every part of the world (too bad she could never hear it.) Helen Keller faced many childhood and adulthood difficulties, and remains to be seen as an extremely positive influence for all women. From my perspective, she was a hardworking activist with her own personal views and opinions despite her ailments. Keller is a true role model for all women – especially those with their own diseases or disabilities. Feminists of all ages could look to the path Keller made for them in the world of women suffrage and equality.
St. Teresa was born in Avila, Spain on March 28, 1515. She was baptized as Teresa Sanchez de Cepeda y Ahumada. At a young age she would often give gifts to the poor and pray. Her father and her mother were both Catholics which inspired her to do the same. Her father was a very strict man a demanded her to never lie, while her mother told her to lie and comforted her. This created a ton of turmoil in the family and made St. Teresa end up loving her mother more due to her father’s severe strictness. St. Teresa felt that everything she was doing was wrong. During her teens her mother passed away leaving her to deal with her father by herself and she was relieved of some of the pain by turning to the Virgin Mary for comfort. In her late teen years
One very successful leader, who was also a hero in the popular press, was Eleanor Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt made enduring changes in the role of the First Lady of the United States, and championed change in human rights around the world. The First Lady became a career position, a political platform, a media persona, and a worldwide influence at a time when most women did not pursue careers. Eleanor Roosevelt stood up for women when women did not have any rights. She then stood up for African-American, most notably the Tuskegee Airmen during World War Two, at a time when African-American did not have civil rights (The Tuskegee Airmen, n.d.). Once she left the White House, she emerged as a worldwide leader of human right when she authored the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with the United Nations. Throughout her life, she used her high social standing, her political prowess, and own passion for human rights to breach barriers, influence followers, and create lasting change.

So Mother Teresa made a new order known as “The Missionaries of Charity”. What Mother Teresa wanted this charity to do was to help people who no one else was helping or who no one else wanted to look after. Mother Teresa opened homes for the dying and she made an open-air school. During the 1950s and the 1960s she made a nursing home, leper colony, health clinics, an orphanage, and a family clinic. In 1952 Mother Teresa opened a home for the dying. When Mother Teresa was at the home for the dying she would spend lots of time with those who were going to pass away very soon. “Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, and forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.” Mother Teresa traveled around the world to find people in need. She opened houses for lepers, babies, and for the homeless. Mother Teresa taught for 20 years in Saint Mary’s high school in Calcutta, India. Because she shared her life with the poor, the sick, and the hungry, she started schools and homes for homeless children and she also helped the poor for no funds, Mother Teresa is an influential bolster.
Mother Teresa is one of the most recognized women in the world. Teresa brought in a revolutionary change in the world with her positive thoughts and love for humanity. Her missionary work started way back 1931 when she was still a little girl. She joined the Nuns as a kid in 1931, and she was later named Teresa from Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. It was in respect and honor of the Saints of Theresa. Mother Teresa’s missions were concentrated around helping the poor people with their basic needs such as food, water and shelter. She also demonstrated a lot of interest in taking care of the weak and defenseless people in the society. For example, it has been recorded that she spent a lot of time caring for the elderly, disabled and injured. At the same
...er’s life was not an easy one. She was admired by many for overcoming her disabilities and persevering through hardship. Keller was blinded at a young age. At the time, there were not as many resources as there are today. This did not deter Keller. She seized every opportunity and used them for her advancement. Individuals saw her as a “Miracle” for being able to have an education like any other child. Also, she inspired children and adults who were like her and gave them hope for the future. From Helen Keller I have learned that I should not quit what I love despite my situation. I can stand firm when others are tearing me down and saying I cannot do it. A person one can admire is a leader who has overcome a situation and is able to help others from their personal experience. Their victories give us hope and the courage to face each day with a sense of expectancy.
