Learning English for some is necessity, for some it is passion and for some it is like no other option. English is lingua franca and needed in national and international fields especially in Asian countries where people prefer this language than other regional language. For adult and aged beginners, it needs persistent hard work. In writing, grammar plays a vital role. Market is flooded with grammar books filled with rules and repeated examples. I remember the example of VYBGYOR from my childhood. We could recall the colours of rainbow in sequence with the help of this mnemonic. Human mind works efficiently on made associations and image perceptions. Church continues, “Word association norms are well known to be an important factor in psycholinguistic research, especially in the area of lexical retrieval. Generally speaking, subjects respond quicker than normal to the word nurse if it follows a highly associated word such as doctor.” (p23) Another scholar, Paula Jullian suggests, “Meaning association is a key aspect to Semantics. These mental connections may go from very basic facts and relations (synonyms -antonyms) to very advanced and sophisticated analogies which set the ground for figurative language and metaphors.” (p239-247) In addition to that she points, “we all make our own matches, based on personal experience, which bring into play non-linguistic associations.” (p239-247) This refers to our personal associations that we make when we go first time somewhere remembering a building, temple etc. so that while coming back we may not forget our way. This essay opens the minds of people to see that perfect writing is not always the perfect thing. Murray’s essay would interest almost every person who has been a student and taken an English class. Most
The first essay given in this course was about our whole composing process. This essay was hard to write about and I remember having several grammar mistakes. Sitting down and writing my process on paper,
Writing has always been my greatest weakness throughout my academic career. I love to talk and debate with other students. I also know writing will be important in any future career. Therefore, being able to translate my thoughts into writing efficiently has been a goal of mine. Thanks to WRC 1023, I have made great progress towards that goal. Because WRC 1023 teaches persuasive writing, I have focused on writing a strong thesis and using credible sources in my essays. But, I still have to improve on grammar, another important aspect of writing.
...tegory 2. Park-> kitchen, bedroom, stove) . When cued by an unrelated category, participants would be required to recall as many correct words under that specific unrelated category. This will test if categorical influence spans over words that are incongruent with the category they are in and if associations are formed regardless simply because of categorical organization.
It is disheartening when the writing of even advances-level second language students often contain many awkward sentences and non-English like patterns. ESL writers face various linguistic challenges as they write, and they should be allowed to navigate through the writings of others to attend to the linguistic features they may need in order to accurately express their thoughts. ESL writing teachers can help students by providing language support, through models and prewriting activities that will encourage students to recognize certain linguistic forms and stock phrased used by native English speaking writers. They support of a writing center is also essential because a writing center not only introduces students to the academic community, but also serves as a forum where students can negotiate meanings and discover correct language forms so that they can then convey them (doi: 10.1002/tej.2). Most districts have implemented such programs to help students learn how to write in English, so they can be able to take the STAAR exam, which is required by the state of Texas in order to graduate High
“Semantic association” is the term used by Dina Sherzer in her essay describing how Beckett uses dialogue to “devaluate language [in order to form] a linguistic construction which animates the play while expressing the absurd” (Sherzer 145). Sherzer states that Beckett’s use of language is associative; that is, the audience comprehends dialogue and symbolism on their practical level and their metaphysical levels. When Estragon complains, while attempting to take off his boot and failing, that there is “Nothing to be done,” Vladimir replies: “I’m beginning to come round to that opinion. All my life I’ve tried to put it from me, saying, Vladimir, be reasonable, you haven’t yet tried everyt...
Sekelj and Rigo (2011) stated that there are three phases of learning the English language. The first phase is the pupils of Year 1 to Year 4, where in this phase, pupils are preferably do a lot of mechanical drilling and practicing some patterns of grammatical features which occur in the context of dialogue that are related to their real-life without any metalinguistic explanation in order to allow them to participate orally and physically as much as possible in dialogues, role playing and dramatizing. It is because, in this stage, it is important to make them conscious of their progress and increasing their motivation to use the language. Teacher should use a variety of activities to teach grammar such as by using songs, riddles, games and stories because it could be very helpful and an efficient ways in teaching grammar as what had suggested by Long (2000) where this FonF approach is effective because it is learner-centered and tune to the learners’ internal syllabus. According to Sekelj and Rigo (2011), Vilke (1977) said that, at the early age, the unconscious acquisition process is superior to the learning one due to the child’s cognitive development. Next, the second phase is Year 5 to Year 6 where in this stage, grammar start to be taught explicitly but with simple and clear explanation and awareness of accuracy of grammar structure should be
In the article, “Shifting Perspectives about Grammar: Changing What and How We Teach” by Dean, the reader is presented with additional examples of stylistic rules versus actual rules based in grammar.

The first thing I think of when I try to define good styles of writing is a knack for grammar and vocabulary. These are the most important aspects of writing when it comes to getting oneÂ’s message across. Without proper grammar, confusion and misinterpretation reign supreme. Strunk and White feature an entire chapter exclusively to the practice of using the correct grammar (Strunk and White chapter 4). Williams, meanwhile feels that the rules are not necessary to dwell on ever, and breaks rules down into three ways: rules that "No native speaker of English has to think about", rules that educated writers only think about "when they see or hear them violated" and finally, rules that are apparently there for grammarians to find faults in writing, and that educated writers generally accept that these rules can be ignored (Williams 176).
