Communication skills and leadership go hand in hand. In order to lead a group and influence their completion of specific goals, one must be capable of successfully communicating among ones peers. This is especially true in the healthcare industry. A leader who lacks effective communication skills is unable to maintain camaraderie between their staff, due to misunderstanding and ineffective communication. This results in failed goals. Leadership in the healthcare industry is vital not only to the organization, but also its staff, patients and visitors.
According to early research, the process of leadership should encompass certain traits and behaviors. The seven traits that proved to be consistently associated with leadership are: Drive, Desire to lead, Honesty and integrity, Self confidence, Intelligence, Job-relevant knowledge, and Extraversion (Robbins, DeCenzo, & Coulter, 2011, p. 295). Early trait theories of leadership suggest that possessing certain traits is, in fact, not a guarantee of becoming a leader, but reveals that if one does encompass these traits they are more likely to be an effective one (Robbins, DeCenzo, & Coulter, 2011, p. 294-295). Research then turns to the behavioral aspects, as researchers wonder if leaders’ actions encase something unique. In fact, they do. Through behavioral studies it was determined that a leader’s behavior usually has a dual role. Their focuses are on the task or end goal, as well as on the people involved. (Robbins, DeCenzo, & Coulter, 2011, p. 294-295). Today, research concludes that many different skill sets and techniques are used (Dunn, & Haimann, 2010, p. 481-485). This is due to the ever-changing economy, diversity in the workgroup, and multiple generations under one person’s...

Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.

Introduction People always talk about how important it is for companies to have a good leader, someone who not only keeps the blue numbers, but also achieves a loyalty from customers, pleasant working environment, successful business partnerships and ahead of the competition. To exercise effective leadership, the individual must meet certain parameters, which if they are carried out successfully all of them will ensure a long life to the organization. The relationship with partners should be based on trust. Do not just give employees a list of tasks, encourage their views so that their skills might be enhanced for advancement.
Trait theories are theories that consider personal qualities and characteristics that differentiate leaders from nonleaders." Early results aimed at confirming this theory were inconclusive. Many research studies were conducted and each identified key traits supposed to differentiate leaders from nonleaders. The problem is that they didn't get the same results, thus failing to discover common traits, which should have shown in each research study. When applying the Big Five Personality framework (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness to experience) to the study and research of leadership traits, results were more encouraging. They showed that the most important trait for leaders was extraversion. Still, this founding sh...
