Throughout the short story of “Lady with a Dog” many characters drastically change. Personally, I believe that the person that shows the heavier amount of change is Gurov. Of course, both Gurov and Anna change, but Gurov takes things to a different level considering his past.
Gurov is at the age of forty, he has a daughter at the age of twelve and also two other sons. By this time in most adults’ life they grow up. A man of this age most of the time is working on his career or focusing on his family. This is the complete opposite of Gurov. Gurov starts out in this short story as a lying, cheating, and heartless guy. When it was his time to marry he was very young and irresponsible about it, he marries a lady that he does not fall in love with. She will never truly make him happy. Kate the Great Literary Analysis In Kate the Great by Meg Cabot, Jenny realizes that she cannot let anyone bring her down no matter what. When Kate comes around Jenny feels as if Kate is her master and she has to listen to whatever she is told to do. Jenny did not want to hurt Kate’s feeling by not letting her in, this is exactly what Kate told Jenny, “Don’t be such a baby,” (Cabot, 33).
Dr. Seuss 's Go, Dog. Go, was a book I remember reading a lot (probably because I loved dogs so much). When I was younger I used to go to my aunt 's house during the summer, and my grandmother would always be there. She enjoyed reading, so she made me read a book a week, whether it was from the library or from the books on the shelves at my aunt 's house. I did not enjoy going over there to read, especially since it was summer, but I did get rewarded after finishing a book with a game of Guess Who? with my grandmother.
Within this story, the man fell in love with a woman who unfortunately did not obtain the same feelings for him. This shows a bad side of women by basically stating that they will ruin a man’s life without feeling bad for him nor having sympathy for hurting him. Consistently, in his stories he shows that women are a burden in the men’s lives. On the other hand, all women do not act in such a manner. Without a doubt, these women in the story are the one percent. Irving strong passion of hate toward women is a reason unknown. Irving lose his wife at a young age, his wife died at the young age of seventeen. They were soon to be married and Irving loved her dearly, but after she died, he never engaged, married, or dated a woman. It is a possibility that he resented his wife for dying. That he took all the bad actions she did and buried them inside, hating women for life. I each of his stories he has the woman doing something the husband to not like. So, maybe each thing the women did in the stories was from what his wife use to do. If he would have took all the good she did out of their relationship when his soon to be wife died, Irving would be a whole different person. The short story, “Ivan Fyodorovich Shponka and His Aunt”, explicates the life of a man named Ivan Fyodorovich Shponka. We see him briefly in his young years, followed by his life in the army, and his return to the farm where his strong characterized aunt resides. We can see immediately that this man lives in constant cleanliness and dutiful paranoia; these are some of his desires that he wishes to exhibit to others. We can also see his fears, which reside in the confiscation of his masculinity and independence. This short story has many elements that resemble others in the Nikolai Gogol collection.

The women in Fathers and Sons symbolize the diversity found within the same class and generational margins these women challenge the men they encounter and cease power over their relationships. The struggle for power, between the sexes is dependent upon the roles and social standings of the perspective character. The female characters whether aristocratic or dependent, “mothers” or “daughters” find power in their gender and utilize their womanly intellect to find eventual resolve.
Anton Chekhov born into a life of serfdom in late 19th century Russia. Although Chekhov and his family struggled financially for most of his life, he acquired a great education. Chekhov is known for writing many emotionally attached stories, but his writing of Lady with Lapdog was close to his heart because Chekhov shared a similar experience to the main character of Gurov along his own love and happiness.
The world is plagued with an inseparable mix of good and evil. People make mistakes, but often start out with good intentions. Often times actions live in the grey zone, a combination of good intentions but bad outcomes. In Mark Haddon’s novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time there are many decisions that could be considered morally ambiguous. Infidelity is depicted as an extremely negative thing in the United States, and is often blamed for trust issues, psychologically damaging the spouse and their children, tearing apart marriages and families and more. People who commit adultery are often shamed and told how wrong what they did is and what a terrible person they are for doing it. According to the Journal of Martial and Family by the Associated Press, however, 41% of “marriages where one or both spouses admit to infidelity, either physical or emotional.” Clearly, while infidelity is generally viewed negative by society, many people either decide that it is not as negative as it is portrayed, or do not care and do it anyway. “The Lady with the Pet Dog” and “The Storm” both go against the typical view of adultery being a negative thing in a relationship by showing that it can actually have a beneficial outcome and leave some, if not all people happier.
In the short story “The Cheater’s Guide to Love” by Junot Diaz, the author pinpoints on the Yunior’s life as a writer and college professor who is also struggling with his romantic relationships. The short story is filled with his experiences of using women for his beneficial needs and how it negatively affects him. It focuses on Yunior’s downfall through life after the destruction of his relationship with his fiance. The diction includes the narrator’s hateful consideration of women and a paradox of his own endeavors which prevent him from pursuing a meaningful relationship, but he grows to realize that he treats women awfully and his ex did the right thing by leaving him due to his untruthfulness.
A disconnect between genders was exhibited in early Russian culture. The objectification of women was a common problem in the Soviet society. In Mikhail Sholokhov’s And Quiet Flows The Don, there is an abundant amount of examples detailing men’s attitudes toward women. Early on in the novel there is a disturbing depiction of rape between Aksinia Astakhov and her father. It is difficult to comprehend the motives behind an act of rape, especially when coupled with incest, but that is not occurrence of rape within the novel. Further on there is a particularly vivid account of a gang rape scene between multiple Cossack soldiers and a young woman. Although particularly difficult to read, this moment further illustrates the female objectification present in this time-period by clarifying the commonality of the abhorrent treatment of women. Furthermore, it is revealed that the men are more than willing to resort to violence if it is necessary to keep the rape a secret, “Breath a word… and, by Christ, we’ll kill you!” (186). Literary Analysis and Comparison of A Persistent Woman And Uncle Ernest I have chosen to compare and analyse the openings of "A persistent woman" and "Uncle Ernest" because the both authors have used similar literary techniques to try and make the reader read on but it in very different ways. For example both extracts describe the main characters (Uncle Ernest and Temple) but in "Uncle Ernest" this is very explicit, describing his appearance in great detail. Just from the first sentence we know he is a "middle-aged man wearing a dirty raincoat" and can begin to form a mental picture, creating familiarity and empathy. In sharp contrast, A Persistent Woman creates mystery and suspicion about the main character, Temple.
The story “The Darling” by Anton Chekhov, illustrates a woman that is lonely, insecure, and lacking wholeness of oneself without a man in her life. This woman, Olenka, nicknamed “Darling” is compassionate, gentle and sentimental. Olenka is portrayed for being conventional, a woman who is reliant, diligent, and idea less. Although, this story portrays that this woman, known as the Darling needs some sort of male to be emotionally dependant upon, it is as if she is a black widow, she is able to win affection, but without respect. Only able to find happiness through the refection of the beliefs of her lovers, she never evolves within the story.
