Kurt Vonnegut’s anti-war science fiction novel entitled, Slaughter House Five otherwise known as “The Children’s Crusade” or “A Duty Dance with Death,” is a classic example of Vonnegut’s eccentric and moving writing capabilities.Originally published in 1969, Slaughterhouse-Five pays tribute to Vonnegut’s experiences in World War Two, as an advanced scout in the 106th infantry division, a prisoner of war and witness to the firebombing of Dresden on February 13th, 1945 in which 135,000 people were killed, making it the greatest man-caused massacre of all times.This novel illustrates the cruelties and violence of war along with the potential for compassion in human nature and all that it encompasses. Billy Pilgrim’s life is told out of order, which gives him a different perspective than the rest of the world. Billy lives through his memories, and revisits events in his life at random times and without warning. Vonnegut introduces Billy Pilgrim to the Tralfamadorian way of thinking about memory and time so that he can cope with being unstuck in time. The Tralfamadorian ideology is set up as an alternative to the human ideology of life. In the novel Slaughterhouse-five, Kurt Vonnegut constructs a reality where memory is unproductive through the Tralfamadorian narrative. Vonnegut inserts the main character, Billy Pilgrim, into this world as a method of coping with the fact that he is unstuck in time. Billy accepts and celebrates the Tralfamadorian ideology, but Vonnegut does not. I argue that Vonnegut sets up the binary between the Tralfamadorian way of dismissing memory and the human way of depending on memory in order to illustrate that human beings are not able to accept the Tralfamadorian way of living. Throughout the novel, Vonnegut shows that remembering the past is in fact productive; it helps humans to understand the past and move forward. Vonnegut addresses the human condition and the importance of remembering by juxtaposing it with the Tralfamadorian perspective, which he argues cannot be adopted by humans.

While Billy is living on Tralfamadore he continually finds himself asking "why me?" To which he is answered, "That is a very Earthing thing to ask, Mr. Pilgrim. Why you? Why us for that matter? Why anything? Because this moment simply is. Have you ever seen a bug in amber?" (97) The reference of the bug in amber helps Billy see time in a whole new way. Billy learns that he must be present in the moment he is in now. Thinking too far into the future or looking back at old times draws him away from the life he is living in right now. Billy still finds himself time traveling from place to place and era to era, but the bugs in amber reminds him to stay present and take his surroundings in. The Tralfamadorians explain to Billy that humans try to draw attention away from what is currently happening. Humans have a way of looking back at old times and trying to relive that moment or look to far ahead into the future to try to sneak a peek of what life looks like down the road.
