Benefits of Participating in a Team Sport

Participating in team sports influences a young person’s future by building his/her awareness of team working and cooperation, responsibility and by helping him/her make new friends.
Getting sweaty, getting fit, relieving life pressure, and having fun- these are the benefits that participating in team sports could bring. Yet, in addition to these physiological benefits, team sports such as soccer, baseball and basketball, also facilitate the mental development of the participators, especially young ones. This essay will have an empirical discussion on what effects team sports could have on a young person’s future. Three ways through which team sports could influence young people are discussed in the essay: firstly, team sports teach young people the importance of team working and cooperation; secondly, through team sports, young people would become more willing to and more capable to take responsibilities; lastly, doing team sports is a non-substitutable way of social socializing.
Team sport is never a one-man game. Although we have superstars in each kind of team sports: Lionel Messi in soccer; Kevin Durant in basketball; and Adrian Peterson in NFL, they could never win such titles and prizes relying on their own talent without teammates’ support. To illustrate, using a recent example, Oklahoma Thunder, for which team Durant is playing for, have had two consecutive bitter loses against San Antonio Spurs. Durant, this year’s NBA regular season MVP, had good performance; however, his teammates, especially the other starting line-ups, were completely out of shape. ...am sports is a good way for socializing. One sport team can consist people from different blocks, different schools,even different countries. These people are hard to reach under normal circumstances. As a consequence, participating in those sports provides an opportunity for the youth to make friends, to network and to learn about different cultures. These “friends in youth” may then become enterprise partners or other forms of “right people”, which could is a very powerful resource in a person’s future career.
In summary, team sport teaches young persons the importance of team working and cooperation in dealing with organisational life. Participating in team sports also facilitates the youth’s awareness of responsibility. Besides, the friendship built through team sport with teammates may become a strong advantage in a young person’s future career development.
