Joseph White: Godfather of the Field of Black Psychology

When you think of a psychologist, you typically do not think about what minority they are. It never did occur to me before this assignment was due, that a book was prejudice against which they select to be referenced in books. In any subject, not just psychology, why would it matter if someone were of color, what his or her gender is? Many psychologists have not been given any recognition or an opportunity because they are not in the stereotype of a “white male.” When you intentionally type, “psychologists” on Google, the results are all white males. Ironic? That is up to interpretation. I did some more browsing, and eventually came across an African American man, who was psychologist. He is known by, Joseph white. Joseph is well known as the “ Godfather of the field of Black Psychology.”

A little background history about Joseph white would be beneficial in understanding why I choose him to write my paper about. In addition, it would be informative to the reader of his lifestyle and why he became a psychologist. Joseph white had a general childhood. He was born in Lincoln Nebraska, but had moved shortly after to Minneapolis, Minnesota. White has been married twice. His first wife and him had three beautiful children. He did remarried again, but does not have any children with his current wife. The more important information about in childhood was that he never had a desire to further his education after high school. Mr. White’s mother had convinced him to do further his education. Whites mother had sent him to college Preparatory School at young age. He studied at San Francisco University, and continued on to get his PhD at Michigan State University in 1962. ... and is in effect to help protect and solely help the public out. Currently, Joseph White is the professor at the University of California, Irvine.

Any man and or women who have done as much for others, has the extensive career, and have the educational background such as White deserve to be part of anyone psychology text book. White is still alive, and has been in his career field for around 50 years. He has helped, and changed many people’s lives for the better with his work and great knowledge of psychology. He will continue to be a remarkable person known for his great achievements in psychology. Joseph white was just one of the many psychologist who had an exceptional career. He was from a good family, went to two great universities, and was very well known. Why is someone with his credentials subjected from being part of our psychology textbook?
