What are furries? Why are these people dressed up as animals? Did that person just bark? So many questions roam your mind as you walk down the streets of a big city while a convention or meet is going on. You walk past a group of these strange people and hear them talking and enjoying themselves. Some are dressed as dogs, some as cats, some even as otters or bears. Yet while some bare only ears or a tail you can see how friendly these people are, giving out hugs and making friends and a part of you clicks. You rush home and open your laptop to find out more about these strange people. Many search engines make these people seem to be crazy sex addicts but with a new pair of eyes from earlier, you decide to look deeper and discover the world that is Furries. Many believe that furries went back to Ancient Egyptian times with gods like Horus and Anubis dawning their animalistic characteristics. Yet the more civilized anthros we know and recognize today were set in place by believe it or not, childrens movies such as Robin Hood, The Aristocats, Mickey Mouse, etc. Though there is much speculation about where and how the fandom started it is no question that it is a giant part of todays society. Thinking back you can remember very clearly about all the books and tv shows you’ve watched and read that had these walking talking animals. Yet the people you saw were more mature about their acts and did not seem like children’s books enthusiasts or anything of the sort. Which makes you wonder about the way they acted, nuzzling and hugging and barking with each other. These people are known as the furry lifestylers. All money raised from these conventions is donated to a charity voted by the con’s staff. These events and people all appeal to you so much so you decide to go to the next scheduled fur meet. A wolf pack is, at its foundation, simply a family, with the parents (alphas) guiding the activities of the group. Hence, it is easy to believe that dogs are able to bond with human families, especially when the alphas are already parents. A few of the misconceptions that people have of feral children stem from Disney’s romanticization of these movies. The films are praised for their fun and uplifting stories, the tales of boys who were raised by animals and eventually rejoined society, because they find the love of their lives. Although these are children movies and should not be taken as academic, most individuals are not well informed about feral children, so they tend to use Disney’s portrayal of feral children and try to apply it to reality. Within these classic childhood movies lies a traumatic reality for some children that are inaccurately represented, such as; In The Jungle Book, wolves raised Mogli, but he socializes with multiple species in the jungle. Wolves are pack animals they stick together, they may have slight interaction with other animals, but surely they would not leave their home for them. He was able to walk bipedally while only occasionally walking on all fours, this has never been true in an animal reared feral child. Animal reared children adopt the motor skills that their caregiver has shown them, so in Mogli’s case he should have solely walked quadrupedally. The last inaccurate representation is the idea that Mogli could form a romantic attachment to a human girl, because he was raised in the wild he has had no interaction with humans, he was not socialized

Darcy Morey, the author of this book is a zooarchaeologist and focuses his research on the relationship between dogs and humans throughout time. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee. This book is based on the authors own research and also refers to the information gathered by many other scientists, all of which are listed in the reference section of the book. As mentioned this book contains the results of research from many scientists and is beneficial for learning both general and more scientific knowledge on the subject. Miss Brill is without any relatives or close friends. She has no acquaintances to converse with. Therefore, she treats her fur as if it were a pet. Her fur is a “dear little thing” (98) with eyes and a tail. She sometimes feels like “stroking” it (98).

Dogs in particular due to their interactive and affectionate nature have become increasingly effective in adjunct therapy settings of children and youth. Piaget (1929) revealed in his research a stage in child development that it is inherently natural for a child to attribute human characteristics to an animal. Cartoons, fairytales, and mythology designed for children often depict animals as important roles of human interaction. Children are even found to project their inner feelings onto an animal, which they perceive as loving. These animals too do not talk back or argue which provides the continuous degree of nonjudgmental interaction essential to a child’s recovery process.
As I explored this particular term “Bronies” I was intrigued, this term is something I’ve never heard of, or was aware was actually real. The term, “ ‘Brony’ is an internet slang term used to describe a teenager or adult male fan of the TV cartoon series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (Triple Zed). Bronies get together and have their own events, trends, and have their own unique interests, the Brony fandom comes together and supports each other, they are a unity. As I continued my research on Bronies I found out in depth why they are so interested in this cartoon and fandom, ultimately this is their escape to happiness.

Fur Farms are buildings that function to hold animals, mostly small species such as foxes and minks, until they are ready to be skinned.
