Introduction Hunger is an issue that impacts students at the University of Kansas. This report will highlight the evaluation that was done to justify the opening of a food pantry on campus. The report covers the initial proactive evaluation, the clarifying evaluation, an interactive evaluation, and a monitoring evaluation. Proactive Evaluation The purpose of the proactive evaluation is to find out if there is a hunger issue at the University of Kansas. Based on the results of the evaluation, a program could be created to meet the needs of the student population that is impacted by hunger. Information for the program can be collected from students on campus and from local food pantries. The university should conduct a needs assessment by collecting data from students. A needs assessment is composed of three major stages: planning, data management, and utilisation (Book). The planning stage includes defining the purpose of the assessment and identifying potential uses. Data management is identifying existing data sources and deciding how new evidence would be collected. The utilisation phase decides on the prioritization of needs. The purpose of this needs assessment is to find out if KU students need better access to food. If the need is proven correct, the information could be used to create a program. Data can be collected using quantitative and qualitative methods. Online surveys can be used to find out the demographic information on students who have issues accessing food. In addition, focus groups can be conducted on different students groups based on their living situation (on campus, off campus, living at home, Greek houses). Focus groups will allow the researchers to understand the specific needs of students who do n... ... middle of paper ... ...ocus on the outcomes of the food pantry and the methodologies used during evaluation. Given the university's commitment to service learning, the report will try to prove the academic validity of the food pantry. If faculty members view the food pantry as a legitimate topic for academic study, then research partnerships could be created. In addition, the report will help market the pantry to university administrators. Since these administrators interact with students on a daily basis, increased knowledge of the pantry could lead to more student referrals. The program for the general public will show simplified results of the assessment. This report will highlight the impact that the food pantry has had on campus. This report is intended to educate the general public on the food pantry and how they can donate items or volunteer. This report will be available online.
McKenna points out how students cut their class and study time to work more hours, hunger only makes the students weak and distracted, and that government assistance is not a reliable source to go to in times of need. Student will have to cut their education time for work and will only delay in finishing any sort of degree. Being hungry and trying to work on any school work that requires focus will only cause failing grades and general Health (McKenna). Hunger is a primary, basic need that needs to be satisfied first before anything else can happen. Government programs like SNAP have so much paper work, long waiting times in offices, and unrealistic requirements to maintain eligibility for SNAP that it is not even worth the hassle to apply
Hunger is a very important issue in the United States. The film “Place at the table” addresses to this problem through the stories of American people and families who have to face the struggle with hunger on the daily basis. It is hard to believe that such a prosperous country like United States has such an issue, but the statistics provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture tells us the horrifying truth that one in every six Americans does not have enough food to eat. That is approximately fifty million people. The government and majority of US people are in denial of this problem, because they are simply ashamed to acknowledge it. Hunger can be next door in your neighborhood, but nobody knows about it, because people afraid to talk about it.
Studies have shown that there is a link between food security, performance in the classroom, and obesity. If this issue is not faced head on, America will have a generation of children not fully prepared for the workforce and high health insurance rates due to obesity health issues. In providing help to people who find themselves in food insecure households, people can be found who are skeptical of their true need. One of the biggest myths of the disadvantaged is that they have poor shopping habits or shop in convenience stores where prices are extremely high compared to those in grocery stores. Another myth is that in America, the land of plenty, those that cannot afford food are lazy or cheats.... ...
I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. The Food Bank acts as a storage unit and distribution facility for smaller agencies and organizations such as schools, homeless shelters, churches, and day
Some complain about having too much food and others complain about not having enough food. Since most of us, depend on the dining halls for food, we don’t necessarily think about what we eat; we just eat what’s available (Mei). Some students on campus, however, actually don’t get the luxury of often going to the dining halls, usually because of the type of meal plan they chose. Even without having an accessible dining hall, college students could still make their own meals without the use of processed foods. For example, instead of eating ramen, we could actually utilize our small kitchen that is provided for us in all of the dorms. The small kitchen isn’t often used for making actual meals, instead it’s used to heat up frozen meals. In the three months that I’ve been at Denison, I’ve only seen some international students try to make a meal within our small kitchen. It’s mostly seniors, who live in the senior apartments, or upperclassmen, who live in the Homestead – a type of residence hall similar to senior apartments, that utilize the
In all the freedom and choices a college student can face, food is a major one. The campus cafeteria selection...
Why are there families with children that go all weekend without a meal while our grocery stores are overflowing with food, and our pantries at home have more than we need? If more people were educated about the reality of hunger in East Tennessee, then more people would be inclined to help resolve the problem. Through education this issue can be eradicated. There are ways to better inform East Tennesseans about the realities that plague our poverty stricken population that are ultimately avoidable. Volunteering and making donations to the food pantries and organizations in the area are two of the best ways to support the less fortunate who need aid. In East Tennessee, hunger is a much larger problem than most people know and could be reduced if more people were educated about it, new ways were found to promote feeding the hungry, people volunteered and donated.
Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are limited to a small part of society and certain areas of the country, but the reality is much different. In many ways, America is the...
The mission of the agency is to “provide for the needs of hungry people by gathering and sharing quality food with dignity, compassion, and education”. Volunteers were there to restock the shelves and bag the food for the clients. The staff duties consisted of interviewing clients and making sure the facility ran smoothly. Harvest Hope serves a diverse population residing within Lexington, West Columbia, and Cayce.
When considering the topic of poverty and hunger, many Americans look outside the borders of the United States. However, food insecurity is an issue that plagues millions of American households each year. The United States Department of Agriculture found that 14.5% of American households faced food insecurity during 2012. These households were defined as having “difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members due to a lack of resources” (Nord, Singh, Coleman-Jensen).
Although we, as college students, cannot put a stop to this detrimental issue ourselves, we can assist in ceasing the starvation in our local communities. We could conduct fundraisers for struggling families, and place food drives on campus and outside our local grocery stores. As well as fundraisers, we can make sure that more people are aware of how serious this matter is. Hunger is not a selective factor; it is bound to happen to anyone of us. Therefore, we, as a whole, should make an effort to help others as they go through this obstacle because we would want someone to do the same for us or our loved
Many people here in America are hardworking and resourceful, but an insecure economy can have a long-lasting effect on a diverse group of people. One of the greatest manifestations of this is the inability to consistently afford a healthy diet. In a report by done by researchers in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, ‘in 2011, 14.9 percent or 17.9 million people in America were food insecure (Coleman-Jensen, Nordic, Andrews, & Carlson, 2012).’ Although many different organizations such as the “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,” or the SNAP food stamp program has set out to eradicate hunger, by giving assistance to low income participants, to help them afford food, it does still exist in many different people’s lives, at one point or another. While many other underdeveloped countries have harder times with hunger, many of them, due to socioeconomic difficulties, hunger still causes many problems for different people in America.
After volunteering three times with the social action committee and high school group from Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church in the previous years, the Houston Food Bank became very familiar both in regards of their history and how their volunteerism works. The Houston Food Bank is a non-profit organization that seeks donations of non-perishable food items to serve the low-income families in eighteen counties across Texas. However, during a recent trip to the food bank with the University of Houston-Downtown College of Business, the interactions with a larger group of classmates became more dynamic. Three main topics involving group work at the Houston Food Bank are service learning, community service, and volunteerism. Service learning
Progress Being Made Food security is a fundamental human right. Although still far from being generally accepted, significant progress is being made. Community and nongovernmental organizations are implementing successful programs against hunger. A number of governments have adopted national policies ...
