Since the Internet has emerged from society, access to information has been made readily available for anyone to discover. The Internet connects us to the world everyday, whether at work or at home. It helps us communicate with others; via email, social networking, or blogging. With the absents of the Internet, our society would be missing out on a vast amount of knowledge. Therefore, the Internet is unmistakably beneficial for society to use as part of their daily lives. Also, cell phones have evolved from being solely in place for emergencies, to searching the Internet and paying bills. People of all ages are using cell phones, whether for work or pleasure. There are so many technological devices in our society; however, this technology can be misleading. People voice numerous arguments, both beneficial and non beneficial- concerning technologies in our world.
The Internet gives us a seemingly endless supply of resources; we can search for information, communicate with others, or use it for our own personal work or pleasure. The Internet connects us to the rest of the evolving world, in all different countries around the world. With the ability to seek information on the Internet, we can gain knowledge about an endless supply of topics. For example, if someone wanted to learn how to plant a tree they can simply navigate to Google and type in “how to plant a tree.” Furthermore, thousands of pages will appear with step by step instructions demonstrating the process of planting a tree. This knowledge has made our society smarter because we can figure things out on our own, but at the same time save money; we do not have to pay someone else to tell us how to plant a tree. For centuries humans have depended on natural evolutionary processes for intelligence. Gathering information or doing simple research was a process that required large amounts of time and equipment until the proper information was found. Over the past several years we have seen how technology has advanced for the better of humanity. In “Get Smarter” by Jamais Cascio he brings to our attention some of the ways technology has benefited us today and how it could continue to benefit us in the future as well. The internet has become one of the largest breakthroughs in technology and become one of the most helpful tools created so far.
Eliot Furness Porter was born in 1901 in Winnetka, Illinois; a suburb of Chicago and died in 1990. Eliot was the second of five children. His father was an architect and a natural history enthusiast. Porter’s mother was a Bryn Mawr graduate, who shared her support of liberal social causes. His brother, Fairfield, was a realist painter. Eliot Porter, following in his family tradition, received degrees from Harvard University. He received a Bachelor degree in chemical engineering in 1923, and a medical degree in 1929. He also worked as a researcher in the biochemical field at Harvard University, and taught biochemistry and biology.

Humans are becoming more technologically-efficient every day. New inventions and innovations are constantly being made. The Internet is becoming more “reliable” every day. However, how much do we really get from the constant advancement of Internet use and smarter technology? Should we look at their contributions to the world as a benefactor or a curse? The common effect of “artificial intelligence” in the technology we use every day is examined by two brilliant authors, Nicholas Carr and Jamias Cascio. In Carr’s article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, he explains the effects of the Internet and technology in our society and claims that the overuse of technology is dangerous and can affect how our mind operates. Jamias Cascio, on the other hand, uses his article “Get Smarter” to show the positive effects of technology in our constantly adaptive society claims that technology may just be making our society smarter and more efficient. While Carr and Cascio both use the claim of cause in their articles to provide valid points on how technology affects our society, Carr’s article proves to be more effective because it focuses on skeptical-based evidence and uses a variety of appeals and proofs.

Could you ever think of a world where all our time went into reading books, socializing, and helping the community instead of constantly being on technology devices? These devices have taken over the world we live in by not allowing us to create time to do these other activities besides constantly being on the internet. Although these technological devices help us in our everyday lives such as writing this paper, connecting with others, there are some negative attributes that technology can apply in life. According to CNN, teens spend 9 hours a day, on average, consuming media.
The internet has made things quick and easy to accomplish, but it has had negative effects on concentration and the reading abilities of individuals. The internet is changing many thing around us, but maybe not all are good changes.

My mind has been opened to a wide range of diversity as a result of being a listener to many different types of speeches from classmates some of which touched on culture during our presentation practices in class. From various practices we carried out I was taught how to use my voice appropriately in delivering my message, how to organize my thoughts logically and how to develop confidence on stage.
The opinions of many people vary on technology and the effects it has on today’s society. Some say that it’s more beneficial than anything, others completely disagree, and some have mixed emotions. Would you rather read out of a book, or play online learning games with a possible risk of eye problems? It’s about taking matters into your own hands. 71% of people believe technology has improved their lives. 76% of people completely disagree by saying that technology creates a lazy society and that is distracting and corrupting. Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.

In conclusion, I believe the internet makes the people smarter considering its role as connecting people, improving the quality of education and broadening the perspectives. Nothing can be perfect. Fears from probable negative results cannot be a reasonable ground for opposing the internet. With practical countermeasures, the internet as a catalyst for enhancing people’s smartness is not difficult to imagine.
The Internet has made access to information easier. Information is stored efficiently and organized on the Internet. For example, instead of going to our local library, we can use Internet search engines. Simply by doing a search, we get thousands of results. The search engines use a ranking system to help us retrieve the most pertinent results in top order. Just a simple click and we have our information. Therefore, we can learn about anything, immediately. In a matter of moments, we can become an expert.
