Despite originating more than two centuries and half a world apart, the steam engine and the Internet followed similar paths throughout their conception, development, and execution. In 1712, the first successful steam engine was built; it was bulky, inefficient, and partially hand operated. Two hundred fifty-three years later, the first major network connection was made, using slow, dedicated phone lines to carry information across the country from expensive, complicated computers in Massachusetts to their counterparts in California. Although these innovations were advanced for their time, their usefulness was limited by the scope of their execution. Fast forwarding to 1820, steam engines now used superheated, high pressure steam in order to yield more power in a smaller space, resulting in their widespread use in trains, boats, and cars. The engines operated under 13 times more pressure, using new technology to avoid explosions (CITE 3). Similarly by 1973, networking and networks had advanced at a frenzied pace. People now sent emails to people across the country and then heard the voices of those same people from terminals from universities and companies (CITE 2). The rapid pace of these improvements, coupled with their accessibility, resulted in two designs that profoundly changed the world view of people and businesses. These two designs are not only similar in their origins and historical progressions; they are also akin in the effect of their widespread use. Since their inceptions, they have both had extensive impacts on the world around them. The introduction of new technologies was a double-edged sword in forming society. On one note, inventions like the phonograph, or the electric dynamo brought entertainment and commonplace items to the middle class, as well as household appliance to today's society. Another benefit, included the shift from steam engines to that of internal combustion, seen in automobiles (500). On another side, factories became more efficient by means such as the open-hearth process used in steel mills, leading to lower wages, and longer hours for workers (500). Although the first example has provided today’s society with modern appliances, the latter was more significant during the early 19th century. Now that production lines were more prominent, workers no longer needed to be skilled in multiple jobs, and in turn they were easily replaced by those willing to work for the lowest price.
The Victorian Internet is a book reflects the story of telegraph invention which opened the doors for many technological communications inventions, such as the telephone and consequently the internet. Tom Standage the author who wrote this book born in 1969.He graduated from Oxford University then he persuaded a career as journalist and author (Word Press). Advancements in new technology clearly promoted the industrial growth of the United States. The new technologies allowed business owners to reduce labor in the movement of materials from one point to the other. This occurred by using the new technology of railroads and machinery. Business owners used the railroads to transport their finished product and raw materials around the country more efficiently, which enabled businesses to expand. The business owners were now able to use machines for lifting materials from one floor to another and to use conveyer belts to move materials around on an assembly line. First, larger cities brought the need for more transportation. In 1760 Manchester City was very small. By 1850 Manchester immensely increased in size. The new size of the city brought a need for transportation. New railroads and canals were built in the city (Doc. 1). Much of the transportation and machines created during this time were powered by a steam engine created by James Watt. James Watt, from Scotland, created the steam engine that used steam to power machinery. England benefited from the Industrial Revolution in a large extent due to the increase in cities and transportation. In contrast to moving only goods trains could move people faster and cheaper than going by wagon, boat, horse or foot. This helped ranchers in the west ship their cattle north where the larger cities were. With the many uses of locomotives, railway owners became rich businessmen who controlled a large part of the developing country. Along with promoting new uses of steam the wide spread of using the locomotive created a greater economy for things other than the basic necessities of life. Due to the lowered cost of shipping there goods into the city farmers and ranchers, who were a large part of the population now had money to buy more than just what they needed. This created a need for more workers to create and make what was considered a luxury items.

The invention of the steam engine created a faster way to produce products. These factory created products quicker then being made by hand. More jobs were being handed out due to the need for worker in the fast production of creating merchandise. The steam engine allow machines to be power at a fast past due to it faster way of producing energy compared to the water engine.
People needed faster and more reliable means of transporting the large number of products being produced from factories. Wooden sail boats became steam powered boiler ships made out of iron and steel that more effectively and reliably moved goods from one place to another while steam powered trains took the place of horses, carts, and wagons and made land travel swift and safe. Practical steam engines and new ways of travel had abrupt effects on employment, resulting in even more factories and mills, and centering even more on cities (“Industrial Revolution,” History.com). Communication improved as well, not just by people being able to travel from one place to the next more quickly. Telegraphs and eventually the telephone and radio resulted in handwritten letters no longer having to survive week long trips, but instead being relayed halfway around the globe in just minutes (Deane 72-74).

The Internet started out as an experimental military network in the 1960s. Doug Engelbart prototypes an "Online System" (NLS) which does hypertext browsing, editing, email, and so on. The Internet is a worldwide broadcasting resource used for distributing information and a source for interaction between people on their computers.
