The Information Society in the Republic of Moldova (RM)

This paper aims to debate and to assess the possibility of Republic of Moldova (RM) being an equitable information society (IS), even though the term information society doesn’t have a commonly agreed definition and the concept information society often carries with it an array of suppositions (Webster, 2007). This essay has the purpose to give a prospective of the information society as one where technologies play an indispensable role in economic growth and in social work. The research on Moldova, an Eastern-European country of the ex-Soviet Union, shows that the country is being economically evaluated as very poor in terms of wealth data quality, with GDP per head of about 2,203 dollars (Global Wealth Databook 2013). Hence the country could not be assessed automatically as being a potential information society. This will be argued further by consulting national and international reports which show how information and communication technologies penetrate the layers of the society, and if the development of ICT in governance plans leads Moldova to an information society. In the attempt to evaluate aforementioned, theories of Daniel Bell and Fritz Machlup on information society will be discussed, as well as statistics and scholar articles will be analyzed so that to provide a concise, yet comprehensive view of how is Moldova seen in terms of information society.
In attempt of defining information society (IS), scholars offer several interpretation of it: IS represents a “post-industrial society which places a special emphasis on information” as Daniel Bell pictured it.
