Psychiatry
Psychiatry is a medical field associated with different mental disorders of individuals. Psychiatrists deal with many individuals in society and treat them with the proper medicinal needs, while also communicating with them to find a suitable treatment that works for the individual. A psychiatrist must examine a patient thoroughly to give a proper diagnosis. Through history psychiatry has produced different sub categories, including: geriatric psychiatry, adolescence psychiatry, clinical psychiatry, and general psychiatry. Psychiatry gains controversial issues as it moves forward; it can also produce a negative impact on the psychiatrist’s personal life. The need for psychiatrists is on the rise; it is a growing profession with a large salary because of the request for psychiatrists in general hospitals. A psychiatrist must be cautious when dealing with patients; one must put up a safeguard to ones beliefs to properly treat the patient. The medical field of psychiatry has an interesting history and requires a certain mindset to do the tasks required by psychiatrists
History
Although many psychologists contributed to the development of modern psychiatry, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud paved the way for psychiatry today. Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud’s friendship became relatively close over their years of research, as one can see from the hundreds of letters they wrote to one another (The Freud, Jung Letters, 1974). Freud became popularly known for his theory “The ego, superego, and Id”. This theory states the changes the brain goes through as children grow up, “The Ego” pertains to understanding reality and the demands it comes with and makes up the conscious mind. “The Superego,” is the preconscious, becomes an inner repre...

The fight for improved health care for those with mental illness has been an ongoing and important struggle for advocates in the United States who are aware of the difficulties faced by the mentally ill and those who take care of them. People unfortunate enough to be inflicted with the burden of having a severe mental illness experience dramatic changes in their behavior and go through psychotic episodes severe enough to the point where they are a burden to not only themselves but also to people in their society. Mental institutions are equipped to provide specialized treatment and rehabilitative services to severely mentally ill patients, with the help of these institutions the mentally ill are able to get the care needed for them to control their illness and be rehabilitated to the point where they can become a functional part of our society. Deinstitutionalization has led to the closing down and reduction of mental institutions, which means the thousands of patients who relied on these mental institutions have now been thrown out into society on their own without any support system to help them treat their mental illness. Years after the beginning of deinstitutionalization and after observing the numerous effects of deinstitutionalization it has become very obvious as to why our nation needs to be re-institutionalized.
Movies and shows like, “Girl Interrupted” and “American Horror Story: Insane Asylum” portray hospitals in a way that has truth to it, however they portray the people in a negative way. It has become more known to society that the hospitals that the mentally ill are subjected to living in are not a good place to be. However, the stigma that mentally ill people are dangerous and cannot overcome their illness is still widely
In my clinical experiences in Canada and the United States, I managed patients that had co-morbidities that with appropriate psychiatric care, and psychopharmacology, not only were able to improve physiologically, but also were able to have a more meaningful life. Because of my passion for Psychiatry I have consistently been involved with Psychiatry CMEs, attended Psychiatry conferences as well as had hands on clinical rotations in Adult Psychiatry, both inpatient and outpatient. I have started working with a reputable university in Canada as a Program assistant to help improve the professional life of internationally trained Medical Professionals.

In addition to Freud’s stages of development his best-known concepts are those of the id, ego, and superego (Crain, p. 268). The id personality called ‘the unconscious” is the personality that focuses on maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain through reflexes and drives such as hunger or bladder tensions (Crain, pp. 268-269). The id concept is impulsive, chaotic and unrealistic.

Two decades ago hospitals were for the physically ill and asylums were for the mentally ill. With the stigma fading from mental illness and a movement toward deinstitutionalization, this paradigm of segregation of mental and physical health care does not hold true today. A direct effect of the paradigm shift is a greater willingness on the part of the public to seek help for mental health problems. (Madonna, 2000, ¶ 6) Managed care has stepped up to fill the increasing need for inexpensive mental health care coverage.

Sigmund Freud, an Austrian neurologist, was the principle proponent of the psychoanalytic personality theory. Psychoanalytic personality theory is tells us that the majority of human behavior is motivated by the unconscious, a part of the personality that contains the memories, knowledge, beliefs, feelings urges, drives, and instincts that the individual is unaware, and that only a small part of our psychological makeup is actually derived from the conscious experience. The problem is our unconscious mind disguises the meaning of the material it contains. As such, the psychoanalytic personality theory is ver...
Over the years, people have wondered what goes on in a person's mind that guides them to meet their needs. Sigmund Freud developed a system of personality that boldly attempts to explain the course of personality and what was it origins. Freud theory assumes that one's personality is shaped and some powerful inner forces motivate one's behavior. According to Freud, personality differences commence from the different ways in which people deal with their underlying drives. By picturing a continuing battle between antagonistic parts of personality, Freud was able to develop three systems that make up the total personality. The three systems of personality are the id, ego, and the superego. If the three systems work together in harmony and unite together to form one complete organization, it enables one to create a positive transaction with the environment. If the systems are fighting with each other, one is said to be dissatisfied with himself or the world. By examining the ego, the id, and the superego, one should see how these three systems of personality play an important role in the development of one's personality. In doing so one should understand what conscious and unconscious, and the functions of the id, ego, and superego.

Those who have experienced with cognitive health issues will be able to recognize how an able body with an irregular mindset can hold their lives back right under the surveillance of the people around them. Having been struggling with major depressive disorder for years, I am able to witness the changes that occur within my life and the effect of the absence of “equilibrium” (Sartorius. 662) that an individual needs in order to conciliate with oneself. Through the journey to recovery, I learn that in order to overcome the problem, one must first learn to acknowledge the issue, and explore the different actions that can be taken to treat it with. In the perspective of someone who is aiming to become a healthcare provider, it is a never ending cycle of learning how to better improve the ways to take care of each patient, and most oftenly, the patient’s emotion has great effects on how their diseases can be treated. It is beneficial to view “the disease with the person who has it” (Sartorius. 663) in order for doctors to progress through the treatment, as this method “improve the practice of medicine” and provides a more “realistic” and “humane” (Sartorius. 663) connection between the two parties. Ultimately, both the caregiver and the receiver gains experience from the improved
There are hundreds of different careers in the medical field ranging from neurosurgeons to nurse practitioners. Psychiatry deals specifically with the diagnosis and treatment of mental, behavioral, and emotional ailments. The main purpose of a psychiatrist is to help people coop with issues and stress in their environment that make it difficult to lead a normal and healthy lifestyle. These issues may arise from abuse, addiction, mental disability, disease, or physical injury. It is the psychiatrist’s job to ensure the patient can maintain a healthy attitude and continue to provide for themselves. A Psychiatrist may choose to specialize in many sub classes of mental health including children and adolescents, geriatric psychiatry, addiction, and pain management. While requiring an intense and difficult education, the occupation in psychiatry is one that offers meaningful, fulfilling work and a high-end salary.
His research on children was lacking, as was his use of empirical studies, his research was male-dominated and also lacked universality. The theory of the id, ego and superego develops from birth into childhood; therefore, the use of case studies on adults and the lack of empirical study does not seem feasible enough to have developed this theory. First of all there is no guarantee that the memories of these adults in their childhood would be accurate, there was not any factual, re-testable data so it lacked reliability and validity, secondly each case and person’s experience is different and therefore cannot be used to determine the development of an entire population. Freud’s theory was further biased due to him overlooking social and environmental aspects, which prevent universality; he was a European man who researched other upper middle class Europeans whose everyday living and circumstances differed greatly from others in society.
Sigmund Freud is best known for his development and use of psychoanalysis. The theory of psychoanalysis focuses on the concept of how our unconscious thoughts, feelings, and emotions play an active role in our daily lives. The id, ego, and superego are the three mental zones that encompass our psyche. Each zone has a specific function: The id functions on the pleasure principle; the ego on the protection of the individual; and the superego on protection of society. The degree of which each zone has been developed can be broken down and then analyzed. These three zones can be visualized by imagining a pie cut into three slices.
