The influence of media on society in the 21st century is undeniable. Of all the types of media, music and books stand out as two of the main strands that influences people the most. They are both invaluable resources of knowledge and entertainment that can be accessed by all age groups. However, the most important aspect of music and books that has made them so prominent to the 21st century audience is that it offers a wide range of genres and styles. Consequently, Music and books have become the principal method of entertainment in the lives of many, as it bestows upon people the opportunity to free themselves from reality, and exist in their own fantasy worlds. By comparing and contrasting the impact of music and books, a superior understanding of their effects on society becomes apparent. Pop sensations such as Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga have dominated and captivated the attention of the world wide audience. Even terms such as “Belieber” or “Bieber fever” are employed as a way of expressing individuals’ love for Justin Bieber. Such a vast crowd of admirers worldwide expressing the same adoration for one person perchance is only rivaled by characters in books and novels. For instance, characters in Harry Potter and Twilight have established fan bases with memberships in the millions. Edward Cullen in Twilight has set new standards for boyfriends. While eleven year olds wait patiently for their Hogwarts acceptance letters because they want to one day become as great a wizard as Harry Potter. However, at the end of the day, these influences create an unrealistic illusion in the minds of individuals to mimic these events when the authors simply meant for them to be fictional. In the case of music, it creates unrealistic expectatio... ... middle of paper ... ...as a reader might with a book. That being said, music does provide benefits such as entertainment, and relaxation, however, from an academic point of view, music distracts students and influences their grades by limiting their academic potential. The influence of books and music on today’s society is undeniably significant. It plays an immense role in what the values of a society is, and expands the imagination of people of all ages. Such examples are that fantasy novels inspire people to think big while music acts as a way of expressing oneself through lyrics and beats. Other forms of media such as the internet, television, and radio have been effective in spreading books and music of different authors and singers. They will continue to be effective as more and more applications and programs are created everyday for the sole purpose of distributing these materials.
Music education is important for several different reasons. Music is a very valuable resource for students and teachers alike. Research has shown that musical study improves a child's early cognitive development, basic math and reading abilities, SAT scores, ability to work in teams, as well as spatial reasoning skills (VH1, 2003, para4). Music helps students to achieve in areas of intelligence. “Feis, Revecz, the Pannenborgs, Miller, and others are unanimous in finding that musicality and high intelligence go together” (Mursell & Glenn, 1931, p. 20). Studies have shown that preschool children taught with music and songs have an average 10 to 20 points over those without, and by the age of 15 have higher reading and math skills. Another study showed that students that had taken a music appreciation class scored 46 points higher on the math portion of the SAT, and students who had music performance experiences scored 39 points higher than students without any music experience (Harvey, 1997, para13). Music impacts most other areas of learning. “The area holding the greatest prospects for transfer from music appears to be language arts.” (Hoffer, 1983, p. 46) It has been said that music helps concentration during reading. Music is an affective memory aide, because of its use of rhythm, rhyme and melody. Music for young children helps them to learn language because of the rhythms and patterns involved in learning the songs. The involvement of music in education can help to develop oral language skills, listening skills, and an increased vocabulary. Music can help the comprehension of language and basic facts (Dobbs, 1990, 341, 342).

There are many forms of this, and some include newspapers, the Internet, television, and so much more. While there are obviously many great benefits to the growth of media, there are some undeniable and harsh downsides. “In a study on fifth graders, 10 year old girls and boys told researchers they were dissatisfied with their own bodies after watching a music video by Britney Spears or a clip from the TV show “Friends”" (Sanders). This is only one of the many disturbing statistics about the effects that media can have on people. An extensive amount of research and studies have been done over this topic, and it is very evident that media influence has greatly affected society and its peoples’ behaviors in a negative way.

Social Scientists say that the average American watches too much television and plays too many video games. I would agree with this, because in high school that is all I did, but not so much for me anymore. Back when I was in high school that is all I did. Watch television, play Nintendo, hang out with my friends. However, now that I am in college, I have had to change my ways. It helps a lot that I don't have either one of those in my dorms.
