Part One: 1. The discovery of beer is linked to the growth of the first civilizations because beer played a central role in the adoption of agriculture. Farming was adopted by civilizations in order to maintain the supply of beer. Farming created food surpluses which allowed civilians to specialize in other activities. The consumption of beer tipped the balance away from hunting and gathering lifestyle towards farming and a settled lifestyle. 2. The history of beer tells us that early civilizations like Egypt and Mesopotamia were made possible by agricultural surplus, in particular an excess of grain. Grain became the basis of national diet in Egypt and Mesopotamia. It was also consumed in solid and liquid forms, as bread and beer. 3. The author used variety of sources to gain information on the use of bear. Such as the “Pyramid Texts”, funeral texts that mentions several varieties of beers. He also used “The Ebers Papyrus”, an Egyptians medical text that contained hundreds of recipes for herbal remedies, many of them which involve beer. He also used Epic of Gilgamesh which showed how beer made Enkidu human. 4. Ancient cultures used beer in religious ceremonies, agricultural fertility rites, for funerals, forms of payment and currency and it provided a safe form of liquid nourishment. Beer’s consumption was socially and ritually important. 5. According to Standage beer civilized man because beer created a settled orderly lifestyle for man. Beer also formed part of their cultural and religious identity, and had great social importance. Beer also allowed man to specialize in other activities and also led to the developments of tools to collect, process, and store grain. Part Two: 1. The Use of wine differed from beer in an... ... middle of paper ... ...isen to nearly 100,000 tons. Part 6 1. Coca- Cola originated in the United States and was invented by John Pemberton. 2. The beverage was used medically it was as valuable as Brain tonic. It had a cure for all nervous infections, such as sick headache, Neuralgia, Hysteria, Melancholy, and more. The ingredients were coca, kola, and sugar. 3. Coca- Cola and the World War II reminded soldiers of home. Coca-Cola became the major drink of World War II. American servicemen identified this drink with what their country stood for. 4. Coca- Cola was thought by communist during the Cold war as standing everything wrong with capitalism. It was particularly the notion that satisfying consumers’ often trivial demands should be the organizing principles of the economy. Communist also regarded the Marshall Plan as imperialism and coca- cola is a reason for their anger.
Civilization View: Due to Anheuser-Busch's global distribution, the company itself cannot represent only one single civilization. If fact, the company is made up of many different civilizations, including the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and Spain. One of the main reasons that these particular countries have a distribution center may be due to their culture. The people there view beer as a favorable product that everyone should be able to enjoy, and one of the reasons the product is popular may be because of that belief. This provides an enormous market for the beer industry.
A History of the World in 6 Glasses is broken down into six sections, one for each drink, the first of which is beer. Man's first civilizations...
Beer and alcohol has been around for thousands of years. It was only in the 1900’s that the idea that alcohol was a bad substance came about. Before prohibition went into effect there were 900 barrels of beer brewed each year. On December 10th of 1913 prohibitionist, people who supported prohibition also know as dries, marched to the capitol for the prohibition amendment. On the opposing, the anti-prohibitionist known as wets, elected the famous brewer Anheuser Bush as their leader. During the time of debate, on April 2nd, 1917 President Wilson declared war against Germany. This war gave the prohibitionist another reason for prohibition. Most of the liquor breweries were from German descent. This gave the wets a chance to combine the idea that war and alcohol were evil because they were both German. After lots of debates prohibition finally passed and went into effect on January 16th of 1920. Once in effect, the federal government wanted the state government to enforce the prohibition laws, meanwhile the state governments thought that the federal government would enforce the new law. This caused lots of confusion and for the law to be broken in many ways. It was acceptable to make wine for home conception, though you could not sell it or sell the ingredients for...
It is not common that when one thinks of the history of the world that the thought of beer, wine, spirits, tea, coffee, or even Coca-Cola comes to mind. Matter of fact, the thought of a beverage having an impact in history may be the very last thing that comes to mind. But according to Tom Standage in his book A History of the World in 6 Glasses, he argues that these six drinks have had an all-round influence in the history of the world. It is hard to imagine that the drinks we know of today, were the foundation and building blocks of the history that has been engraved in us. As to which beverage has had a greater impact in history, it is a matter of the extent to which each particular drink has contributed to influencing, not just people, but the course of history. Not diminishing the impact of the other beverages, but coffee has had a greater impact in history over tea and the other drinks.
Beer isn’t only used to get drunk off of and act up with, Standage talks about how beer purifies the water, thereby cutting down on disease. This is one of the many uses beer was used for. He describes it as a beverage that “united civilization.” There were some drawbacks as first because you had to drink the beer with a straw due to the floating pieces and other ingredients. The toasting to someone's health with beer associated beer with friendly an...
Throughout the study of how beer changed civilization, I have come to realized the way “A History Of The World In 6 Glasses” explains the founding of beer and the positive impact it has left on the beginnings of civilization very accurately. Beer truly has impacted civilization due to the many positive opportunities beer has led society to. The alcoholic beverage surprisingly was the reason mathematics was invented. The farmers would have to calculate who’s crop land was who’s, so the required measuring and diving up land. It is hard to believe that a very common beverage that is served at every restaurant basically led to the invention of mathematics. Now a days mathematics is used on a day to day basis for almost every human being. After extensive research it is safe to say the the founding
Coca- Cola has always been popular with America and in the 1950s; it became the main soda to drink during the 1950s and also the golden age for the product. One glass of Coca- Cola was only five cents. The soda was a symbol of social status. If you wanted to be refreshed and satisfied, then you have to drink Coca- Cola. Celebrities, actors, athletes, workers, kids and even Santa Claus had to have Coca- Cola in their hand. With the boom of television in households, Coca-Cola became more popular because of the advertisements contain relaxing and being comfortable with the soda in their hand. It became so appealing that Time’s Magazine stated that, “It is simpler, sharper evidence than the Marshall Plan, or a voice ...
The story of alcohol in America began as early as Mayflower, the British ship, reached the American coast. Mayflower and the following ships carried plenty of beer – far more than water. One reason was that the water was often contaminated, therefore the beer was safer to drink, and the other one related to passengers´ preference to spend the long and exhausting nine-week voyage in a pleasant alcoholic stupor. Soon after landing, the settlers began making wine out of wild grapes. Rum, whiskey and hard cider were also popular drinks that time. Many American farms had a sizable apple orchard not to make apple pies, but to make hard cider. Cider was drunk daily by both young and old. Culinary historian Michael Pollan stated that “In rural areas, cider took the place not only of wine and beer but of coffee and tea, juice and even water. Indeed, in many places cider was consumed more freely than water, even by children" (qtd. in Carlson par. 18).
World history has always been a series of cause and effect: a web that connects itself through different ideas, peoples, and inventions. Tom Standage in A History of the World in Six Glasses explores how one of those constantly evolving inventions is a common thread throughout all of human history – the invention of drinks. This book demonstrates how different kinds of drinks have affected world events through every social class. Although the idea of viewing history through the eyes of drinks does not seem like a common one, when one thinks about how drinks have pervaded through all aspects of society – social, political, and economical – and how they have provided a nuanced lens of history, it seems like an obvious way to inspect humanity’s past.
Alcohol has been all around the world for centuries and has become a custom of people all over. No one knows for sure who discovered alcohol, but we know how different types of alcohol are made. Just as well, no know knows when alcohol was discovered. There are no records of the discovery or discoverers of alcohol. Although historians do know alcohol ?was used by primitive people and recorded as early as 10,000 years ago in the Neolithic period and by European civilization?(Milgram 22). As early as 5000 B.C., the ancient Babylonians brewed, the process of making beer, their beer in religious temples because it was considered a gift from God. Beer is an alcoholic beverage made by fermentation of cereal grains such as, wheat, rye, corn, or barley; beer contains 3 to 6 percent alcohol. Besides the ancient Babylonians, the ancient Egyptians drank beer. The Egyptians called their beer hek, which was made from barley bread. The bread was crumbled into jars, covered with water, and allowed to ferment. The Egyptian pharaohs blessed this beer in the honor of the goddess of nature, Isis. Egyptians handed out free jugs of beer to peasant workers, and by no surprise drunkenness was a common problem in ancient Egypt (Nielsen 13).
He highlights the importance of the diversity in drinks by a clear interpretation of the 6 drinks of the world: Beer, Wine, Spirits, Coffee, Tea, and Coke. Each drink marked a new era and became symbols of beliefs in the nations they greatly impacted. Wine and Beer were both the first developed. Beer was made from wheat and barley. “The mouth of a perfectly contented man is filled with beer”.(Standage’s 303) This caused humanity to shift more to the agriculture life and become more static. This resulted in the increase in technology and caused different cultures to become more stable. “To rich and poor alike hath he granted the delight of wine, that makes all pain to cease”. Euripides (Standage’s 48) Wine was brought to many religious ceremonies. Wine is very sacred because only small amounts of it where able to transported due to the expense. The king was able to test his power and will due to selling major quantities of Wine. Both Beer and Wine started first phase in human modernization. The author also explains how coffee and tea made a huge impact on human history. He viewed coffee as a way to purify the brain. Tea is made of evergreen bushes which is used as a healing substance in Chine.
They made beer and wine because they couldn't find good drinking water. The beer and wine don't have as much alcohol in it as it does today. It was hard to get seasonings because they were more expensive so the higher levels get it more that the other levels. There is a better chance of getting fresh meat in the fall.
Well, to be distinguished from a fountain. A "beer" was a deep shaft, bored far under the rocky surface by the art of man, which contained water which percolated
The Beer makes up most of the alcoholic beverage industry, with a 74% volume in 2002 (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). The production of beer around the world has increased from 36.85 billions gallons in 2000 to 38.78 billion gallons in 2003 (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). Beer production has been a part of society close to the beginning of civilization. A Mesopotamian tablet dating back to 7000 B.C. contains a beer recipe named ¡§wine of the grain¡¨ (Alcoholic Beverages, 2005). In 1292, a Czech Republic town produced its first pilsner beer. A prominent beer brand, Pilsner Urquell, brewing dates back to the early thirteenth century.
What's more refreshing on a hot summer day than a nice cold beer? Or how about drinking a nice cold one with some buddies after work at a local bar, sound nice doesn?t it? Beer has been around for many years and will probably be around for many more. A beer is any variety of alcoholic beverages produced by the fermentation of starchy material derived from grains or other plant sources. The production of beer and some other alcoholic beverages is often called brewing. Most every culture has there own tradition and the own take on beer, thus producing many different styles and variations.
