The United States of America leads the world in obesity. A staggering 35.7% of our country has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30 according to a Center of Disease Control study done in 2010, and that number is slowly, but steadily climbing. The same study reported that nearly 12.5 million American youths were obese also. In June 2013, the American Medical Association officially classified obesity as a chronic disease. Obesity has been linked to numerous preventable diseases and is a factor in 6 out of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S. Obesity is a preventable and reversible disease that has harmful effects on the body.
In 1990, no states had an obesity rate of above 15%. Now, in 2013, no states are under 20% and most hover between 25% and 30% (United Health Foundation). As the production and consumption of sugar-laden, processed food began to rise, more and more people indulged in quick and cheap foods to nourish themselves and their families. As our country developed, more people began moving into cites and abandoning their rural farms, and adopting a sedentary lifestyle. But our knowledge of nutrition continues to develop, and we now know the astronomical health dangers of soda, hydrogenated oils, and other assorted fast food calorie-bombs. However, more than one third of Americans are still obese. A Gallup Poll conducted in 2013 shows that 28.2% of men are obese, and nearly 35% of African Americans are also. The poll showed that poor minority groups are more likely to be obese compared to white Americans or people in the middle class. About 40 percent of Hispanic boys are overweight or obese, compared to 34.4 percent and 27.8 percent of Black and White boys, respectively (Food and Research Action Center). Why?...

...o obesity is Osteoarthritis. As the body gains more and more weight, pressure onto joints in the knees, hips, and lower back wears away cartilage and tissue between bones triggering pain. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) is when the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries becomes too high for the body to handle, and is a common health problem associated with obesity. Obesity has even been linked to infertility and menstrual issues in women (NHBLI).
Obesity has negative effects on the body and can cause a wide range of illnesses and ailments to the body such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even gallstones. Fortunately, obesity can be prevented and even reversed. A healthy diet and daily exercise are the two biggest combatants against the disease, and a consistent mix of the two will ensure that the body works at its optimal level.
Recent data shows that close to 80 million American are obese. Now, considered a chronic disease, obesity is associated with various health conditions and increases one's risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, asthma, osteoarthritis, gall bladder disease, sleep apnea, and some cancers. Aside from these medical issues, obesity also raises psychosocial as well as economic problems.
According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services there have been a notably large number of deaths due to obesity since it leads into other diseases like heart disease, type two diabetes and high blood pressure. Over weight and obese people in general
Obesity is a choice one makes. If an individual has too much body fat, they can exercise it off. The life one lives as an American permits living sedentary lifestyles that induce obesity. Obesity can potentially cause disease but it itself is not a disease. There are several factors that play roles in obesity.
There is no doubt that obesity has taken its seat as one of the top disease that strikes the world today. In America, obesity has now spread through the country leaving 2 out of 3 adults either overweight or obese, and worldwide 1.5 billion are overweight or obese (Overweight). The cause of this disease stems from multiple reasons such as the increase in modern food production, putting out ample amounts of food causing the prices for meat, groceries, and especially junk food to plummet. Subsequently, Americans especially were more inclined to purchase more food and showed an increase in the average American house hold food intake by 1,000 more calories a day (Dreifus).
In 1990, obese adults made up less than 15 percent of the population in most U.S. states. By 2010, 36 states had obesity rates of 25 percent or higher, and 12 of those had obesity rates of 30 percent or higher. (CDC) Today, nationwide, roughly two out of three U.S. ...
The health problems that comes along with being obesity is high blood pressure, diabetes type 1 and 2, certain types of cancers, heart attacks and strokes. The obesity people are dying early do to complications from being overweight.
"Obesity is defined as having an excessive amount of body fat" (Zeratsky). Obesity is not just about being overweight or eating unhealthy food. Obesity itself is much more complicated than that and has become a worldwide problem. People are considered obese if our body fat percentage is high enough and also if you are thirty-five pounds overweight (Hellmich). Body Mass Index is something a lot of doctors talk about in the health world and it is abbreviated BMI. BMI is how we measure if we are at a healthy weight or not. Determining if we are healthy or not based off of our BMI is not the best or most accurate way to go. Measuring by our BMI could tell us that we are healthy, but really our body's fat percentage could still be too high. Obesity is not just about being unhealthy and weighing a lot more than one should, they could weigh a normal amount and still be considered obese. Normal body weight is also obese as it was just pointed out. This is so, because while our weight is healthy, our body fat is high enough to be considered obese. No one is immune to obesity and it can occur at any age. With this being said, everyone should watch what they eat and get enough exercise throughout their lives.
Over one hundred million Americans and 60% of the adult population are obese. Obesity may seem like it is only an appearance problem, but there are many health problems linked to being overweight. Obesity in the United States continues growing alarmingly. Approximately 66 % of adults and 33 % of children and teenagers in the US are overweight. Obesity is the result of fat accumulated over time due to the lack of a balanced diet and exercise. An adult with a BMI (body mass index) higher than thirty percent is considered obese (Whitney & Rolfes, 2011, pg. 271).
There are many causes for obesity each obese person can have a different one, but in general obesity is caused by an individual consuming more calories than the body can expend or actually needs. Obesity is defined as an abnormal increased of fat in the subcutaneous connective tissue. This means that there are many fat cells under the skin. Eating a lot of food than the body can use for energy makes this deposition.(5) The main explanation for this are eating too much or having a diet high in fat and calories and having lack of exercise or activity. Carrie Fredericks in her book “Obesity” he mention some facts about the causes of obesity and he said that people who get 20 to 30 minutes of exercise most days are less likely to be obese(31). So exercise is one of the factors that prevent obesity. Most dietary research suggests that people should limit the amount of fatty foods they consume to less than 30 percent of their daily energy consumption.
Obesity can cause a variety of major health problem such as high blood pressure, heart disease. What is high blood pressure? Every time your heart beats, it pumps blood through your arteries to the rest of your body. Blood pressure is how hard your blood
Obesity is a public health issue due to the complications it leads to later in life. Obese individuals are more susceptible in obtaining health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, therefore have a higher risk of mortality (WHOgoogle). Yet not only is obesity a problem of the individual but of society as well. In 2008 US spent an estimated cost of $147 billion on medical cost of obesity, almost a 70 billion dollar increase since 1998(CDC). Both the detrimental health issues it leads a too and the excessive amount of cost it causes, obesity is epidemic that must be addressed.
Obesity, also often referred to as being excessively overweight. An abnormal accumulation of body fat over an individual’s ideal body weight. Obesity has been associated with U.S. for many decades, but the cause of it is still unknown. There are many factors such as genetics, various combinations of hormonal, metabolic, and behavioral factors that play a role in obesity. In most of the cases, it is still hard to determine the exact causation of obesity. This epidemic has been increasing throughout the industrialized world. In less than 40 years, the prevalence of obesity in the U.S. has increased by over 50%, so that two of every three American adults are now overweight or obese (Obesity in America, 5). Most obvious consequences of obesity are diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, but cancer, arthritis, and depression are other serious factors to health. All in all, obesity and over weight account for nearly one of every 10 American deaths, and they also drain our society of $223 billion a year (Obesity in America, 5). Obesity is something that is present and dangerous, but people seem to overlook it.
Over the course of the last few decades, the U.S. has seen a drastic rise in the spread of obesity. Through the rise of large-scale fast food corporations, the blame has shifted toward the mass consumerism of these global industries. It is, however, due to poor lifestyle choices that the U.S. population has seen a significant increase in the percentage of people afflicted with obesity. In 1990 the percentage of obese people in the United States was approximated at around 15%. In 2010, however, it is said that “36 states had obesity rates of 25 percent or higher”(Millar). These rates have stayed consistent since 2003. The obesity problem in America is
