Sharing experience is not an occasional but a systematic activity of our species, a form of information exchange and social organization. Teachable experience takes an individual receiving an advanced template of behavior much further in his success in life. Sharing and teaching experience have become so intrinsic and advantageous for our species that an investigation of what forms of sharing/teaching are most effective – the best stories and the best ways if taking them - naturally came into play. Before long, such activities as storytelling and playing (ritual and drama) have come to the attention of human communities around the world. Storytelling and its dramatic counterpart – playing, have becomes essential to our progress as the species.
In the 1920s Mikhail Bakhtin, a Russian philosopher of culture, named the “patron of the humanities in the 1990s) also introduced his theory of dialogism, which became the basis of a new discipline dialogical anthropology. Bakhtin suggested that the dialog is an essential human condition, and a framework of culture, and all its derivatives – texts, stories, films, games, etc. In other words, we always are thinking together, and even we are alone – we create a symbolic imaginary interlocutor to run our ideas by and mimic communication. This idea was wittily reflected in Cast Away, in which Tom Hanks character, alone on the uninhibited island, creates a symbolic being he named Wilson. The ideas of Tuner and BKHTIN correlate on many levels – as a human species we are in constant dialogue with ourselves – thus dialogue is a channel for the productive action-reflection process. Self-reflection is defined as meditation or thought put towards your own goals or motives. To self-reflect, you must be willing to take time for yourself, even if you do not think you have time. Everyone has a lot on their plate, but even if it seems as if the world is crumbling around you, taking time to be selfish every now and again is crucial. Setting a goal for yourself cannot be done unless you have a willingness to understand your own personal nature, essence, and purpose. It may seem hard at times, especially if you are a selfless individual, but it is important to remember your place and what you are trying to achieve. In order to do so it is necessary to understand Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
Narratives are an important part of an essay as they create a sense of tone needed to describe a story or situation with ease. If the narrative is not correct, it can leave a false impact on the readers or viewers because it lacks the main tone of the story. Having a perfect narrative can not only enhance a story, but it can also prove evidence. In her essay, “An Army of One: Me”, Jean Twenge provides some of the best examples of how narratives enhance a story and she also emphasizes on how the tone of storytelling matters on the impact that the story would have on its readers or listeners. Apart from Twenge, Tim O’Brien also focuses on how the narrative of the story can help in understanding the truth and falsity of the story in his essay, “How to Tell a True War Story.” In addition to O’Brien, Ethan Watters also emphasizes on the narrative of cultural progress in his essay, “The Mega-Marketing of Depression in Japan”, when he talks about the anti-depressants to be sold in Japan. All three authors agree to the fact that narrative, the art of telling a story or explaining a situation, has a major impact on the story and on how it is taken by the audience.
A narrative is specified to amuse, to attract, and grasp a reader’s attention. The types of narratives are fictitious, real or unification or both. However, they may consist of folk tale stories, mysteries, science fiction; romances, horror stories, adventure stories, fables, myths and legends, historical narratives, ballads, slice of life, and personal experience (“Narrative,” 2008). Therefore, narrative text has five shared elements. These are setting, characters, plot, theme, and vocabulary (“Narrative and Informational Text,” 2008). Narrative literature is originally written to communicate a story. Therefore, narrative literature that is written in an excellent way will have conflicts and can discuss shared aspects of human occurrence.
Since thought was first invoked in the minds of our ancestors, we as a species have had conflicting viewpoints from one group to the next. Through genealogy, locale, and cultural upbringing, our perceptions have been honed to coincide with those around us. As a species we tend to familiarize ourselves with our surroundings, forming into similar thinking groups whose views and concepts mimic each others. In “The Truth about Stories”, Thomas King, demonstrate connection between the Native storytelling and the authentic world. He examines various themes in the stories such as; oppression, racism, identity and discrimination. He uses the creational stories and implies in to the world today and points out the racism and identity issues the Native people went through and are going through. The surroundings shape individuals’ life and a story plays vital roles. How one tells a story has huge impact on the listeners and readers. King uses sarcastic tone as he tells the current stories of Native people and his experiences. He points out to the events and incidents such as the government apologizing for the colonialism, however, words remains as they are and are not exchanged for actions. King continuously alerts the reader about taking actions towards change as people tend to be ignorant of what is going around them. At the end people give a simple reason that they were not aware of it. Thus, the author constantly reminds the readers that now they are aware of the issue so they do not have any reason to be ignorant.
1. Growing up we all heard stories. Different types of stories, some so realistic, we cling onto them farther into our lives. Stories let us see and even feel the world in different prespectives, and this is becuase of the writter or story teller. We learn, survive and entertain our selves using past experiences, which are in present shared as stories. This is why Roger Rosenblatt said, "We are a narrative species."
Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “Tell-Tale Heart” focuses on the murder of an old man by an unknown narrator. The old man is said to have an “evil eye”, however, there is never an explanation for why the narrator believes this. The narrator then murders the old man and begins to describe why the murder is justifiable, and that he is not “mad”. A plausible theory for the death of the old man could be that the narrator suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and believes he needed to get rid of the “evil eye” for his own safety. The symptoms for paranoid schizophrenia include delusions, auditory hallucinations, anxiety, violence, and so on. These symptoms could explain certain quirks about the narrators hearing “...all things in the heaven and in the earth ...heard many things in hell.” (Kennedy 279) his violence “...I dismembered the corpse” (281) and the narrator constantly contemplating on their every action.
A question that continues to puzzle scholars (and Honors students, alike) is that of what defines human consciousness. It would be simple to say that it is defined by one’s awareness of itself and of its surroundings. What makes the question so difficult to answer, though, is that consciousness is much more than an acute awareness; it is the process of becoming aware, finding the purpose of our consciousness, and building morals and intelligence from that awareness that entangles those who search for answers in a web of utter confusion.

Story telling is something extremely powerful. Stories are used as an escape, a connection, or a memory. In “How To Tell A True War Story”, by veteran and author Tim O’Brien, stories were used to help keep the author sane after fighting in a brutal war. In “Selections from Reading Lolita in Tehran”, written by Azar Nafisi an author and activist, Nafisi explains how escaping reality through works of fiction helped her keep her individuality and sanity during a time of great struggle in her homeland of Iran. Opposing these two authors ideas is Martha Stout’s, a clinical psychologist, “When I Woke Up Tuesday Morning, It Was Friday”, by scientifically examining her patients experiences to explain the phenomenon of dissociation. Stout’s definition of dissociation was described in a way that it has varying levels, from slight to monumental, and how it disrupts people lives and changes their sense of self. In all three of these pieces it is clear to see that dissociation is used differently, and has different effects on each scenario. Dissociation is often linked to healing, but it is not a method of healing, it is a method of coping with tragedy. People utilize different aspects such as imagination and fiction as tools to aid their dissociation, but in the end they are still forced to come back and face the harsh reality of their lives. The true question is if dissociating helps protect or if it harms the delicate sense of self. This essay will explain how these tools, of imagination and fiction, are used to shield the person’s sense of identity, and whether dissociation is helping them or harming them.
Storytelling has been used throughout time, allowing history and religion to be passed down from generation to generation and with the introduction of technology, storytelling has reached a whole new audience. With this new form of storytelling continues to spread, the danger of the corrupt also comes the corruption of social morals into pray. Storytelling may become dangerous because it could cause the viewer to become more aggressive, contribute to child and adolescent violence, and teaches the art of lying/deceiving.
