Introduction:
South Africa is located at the southern tip of Africa (that’s how it got the name) and covers an area of 1,219,912 km². South Africa has a long and interesting history with racism and apartheid, but when you get to know more about South Africa you’ll be surprised by how amazing this country actually is. I would definitely like to live or travel there because of its wonderful scenery and culture.
Demographic issues:
South Africa has a population of 48million and about 12% (5.7million) of it is suffering with HIV. HIV has been growing rapidly in the past two decades, more than any country in the world. This is increasing the death rate by 31% in South Africa.HIV can’t be cured from any person who has it but It can be prevented from passing to another person by not having a sexual interaction with an HIV positive person. The population of South Africa is still growing rapidly due to the high birth rate and immigration (the population growth rate is 1.34% and is expected to rise in the future). Another big problem in South Africa is unemployment, South Africa has one of the worst youth-unemployment problems in the world, it’s expected that about half of the population will be unemployed in the future. what they can do to help fix this problem is to teach the youth properly so they can grow up and find a jobs, they also should increase the amount of available jobs in any way possible, example: removing machines from doing work to allow more human workers. The HIV has also affected the expectancy rate in South Africa, making it into one of the lowest in the world (50) in 2010, but now the expectancy rate has risen up to 58 which Is still low. Canada’s contributions in the Boer War, World War One and World War Two are well documented. The Canadians helped in the Boer War from 1899-1902, World War One from 1914-1918 and World War Two from 1939-1945. Many Canadians were killed in these three wars. Just over more than 7000 Canadians were sent out overseas to help out in the Boer War (this included 12 women nurses).1 Approximately 65 000 soldiers died in World War One.2 (see Appendix 2) Approximately 45 000 died in World War Two.3
South Africa is mostly made up of tribes, it is a huge part of the community there. A tribe is defined as social division in a traditional society consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect, typically having a recognized leader.Some of these tribes are: Zulu tribe which is the largest. Then there is the Wolof tribe, followed by the Samboro tribe. These are just a few out of hundreds of tribes.75% are black, 13% are white, 8% are coloured and 2% are Indian. So as you can see South Africa is very diverse and not just all black like some people may think. In South Africa they believe that it is the father's job to provide for the family, although as times change mother’s are working as well. It is also believed that the mother makes most of the authoritative decisions in the family. Depending on the mother or father’s schedule dinner can be eaten together or separately, most of the time the kids cook for themselves when they get home from school. South Africa has a long history with Europe, the Dutch, Portuguese, and finally the British have controlled this land. The country is home to many different groups, from white to black. South Africa is a new country, liberated by the British in 1934. Its history has been dominated by white power and ignorance. When the British left in 1934, the White South Africans were placed in power, putting them in Apartheid.
The prevalence of AIDs in the African countries has come to be more apparent as the rates of those who have AIDs has increased over the past few years. Zimbabwe is a third world country where many facilities are not available as well as health oriented programs, many people are living under deplorable conditions which also contributes to their risk of infection. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDs caused by HIV, is a disease that is caused by sexual intercourse with those of who are infected with it, AIDs can also be caused by prenatal transmission, and if the mother were to have AIDs then the child would also be infected. The infection of AIDs causes the weakening of the person’s immune system, which then could cause a spiraling effect which would make the person susceptible to other diseases. Education and socio-economic problems are key in areas of the third worlds countries in which many resources are not there to take advantage of.
This book covers a wide range of subtopics on the issue of HIV and AIDS prevalence in South Africa. The authors provide information in a neatly organized way that allows readers to easily find the information they are looking for. The book is divided into 7 sections with multiple chapters in each section. The sections are as follows: Birth of a rapidly growing epidemic, The virus, the human host and their interactions, HIV risk factors and prevention strategies, Focal groups for understanding the HIV epidemic, the impact of AIDS, Treating HIV, and What does the future hold? Sections 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7 will provide good background information on my topic for my paper.

South Africa is a country in the continent of Africa, located to the south tip as its name suggests. Colonized by the Dutch in 1994, South Africa is seperated into nine provinces and is bordered to the north by the countries: Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, to the east: Swaziland and Mozambique, while coined in the south east is the country Lesotho, completely surrounded by the territory of South Africa. South Africa is one of the most diverse places in the world, and has eleven nationally recognized languages, whereas most countries only have one (Rosmarin & Rissik, 2003). The black indigenous population makes up a majority of the country while also harboring other ethnic cultures such as: whites, Greeks, Germans, Italians, and Asians (Rosmarin & Rissik, 2003). South Africa has a mixed economy based on its agriculturally fertile lands, mineral resources and tourist attractions. Though there is political and economic stability, the country is still faced with drawbacks such as unemployment, poverty, and the AIDS pandemic (OECD, 2008). A development plan is vital for the economic development and growth of South Africa.
The first option, to increase death rates and lower the birth rates would be the best choice. This option would be best because of the situation that is in Burkina Faso. The spread of HIV/AIDS has become an important issue in Burkina Faso, where the national statistics estimate that between 4 and 7 percent of the population is seropositive. While these rates are low in comparison to countries of East Africa, they place Burkina Faso second after Cote d'Ivoire among West African countries most affected by the epidemic. Burkina Faso's health problems include a high prevalence of many endemic diseases, poor case management by the health system and a weak infrastructure, with health centres that are geographically or financially inaccessible to most of those they are meant to serve.
70% of this demand derives from agriculture which shows the influence of water on food supply globally as well as not just drinking water (Sawin “Water Scarcity could overwhelm the Next Generation”). But increasing water use is not just a matter of the greater number of people needing it to drink and eat; it also comes from pollution and misuse of water supplies, by either dumping or runoff of bacteria or chemicals into water. This also “causes other pollutions as well such as soil and air pollution, accelerating wetland damage and human-caused global warming” (Smith and Thomassey 25). According to a UN report, recent estimates suggest that climate change will account for about 20 percent of the increase in global water scarcity in coming decades. One of the main causes of water scarcity is water mismanagement worldwide.
Geography: South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is a country settled at the southern tip of Africa. It has 2,798 kilometers (1,739 mi) of lineation that stretches along the South Atlantic and Indian oceans. To the north lie the neighboring countries of Republic of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; and inside it lies Lesotho, an enclave enclosed by South African territory. African nation is the 25th-largest country within the world by acreage, and with near fifty three million individuals, is the world's 24th-most thickly settled nation.
The problem of HIV has been a growing concern around the world, but in no country has HIV had a greater effect on the population than in South Africa. Research has found that there are approximately 6.4 million people infected with HIV in South Africa, giving the country an overall infection rate of 12.2%(Shisana et al., 2014). This makes South Africa the country with the world’s highest rate of HIV-infected people. New infections occur at an approximate rate of 100,000 cases per year (Republic of South Africa, 2012). While other countries have managed to slow the spread of HIV, in South Africa, the problem has become a major public health concern.
People fail to understand that HIV/AIDS is just like every other viral infection just more severe. Friends and family members of the people who have this infection tend to stay away from the infected, this leads to the infected not only sick physical but also mental(depression). This does not only affect their personal life but also their work life due to the fact that people do not want to hire you because you have HIV infection. The Nigeria government to an initiative in 2006 to provided free antiretroviral treatment because of the financial burden it was, but the location of this free clinics are so sparsely located that it still financial burden of transportation. Health care services unlike most developing countries are out of pocket cost, people living with HIV/AIDS who immunity are already low are good candidate for opportunist pathogens therefore they get other disease which may require in patient care, medicines, doctor consultation which cost money. A country which one third of the population is below poverty line, where have a meal per day is a problem cannot only afford the financial burden of transportation, healthy food and addition non routine doctor visitation or drugs end up losing their life surprising not to HIV but to common infection like
