Communication provides people with the crucial opportunity to interact with each other socially, solve problems, and inform each other. Mastering the skills involved in four major areas of communication, public speaking, group communication, interpersonal communication, and computer mediated communication, gives people the chance to share their ideas to a captive audience. My writing often reveals a lot about me, whether it is through what I am talking about or how I talk about it, so getting immediate, and often very honest, feedback in front of an audience of people causes me to freeze, or stutter, or shake, or forget what I am talking about all together. Sometimes I suppress these fears, allowing me to avoid all the physical stammers. However, usually my nerves consume my thoughts during my speech, leaving the audience to pity me and my quite obvious anxiety. I have yet to discover a foolproof tactic to overcome these fears. My goal for this semester is to cure my speech anxiety to a degree where my speeches are presented fluidly. I find that being passionate about a topic makes it easier for me to present with confidence, so I plan to build up techniques to make each topic interesting for me. Also, knowing my speech word-for-word helps me be a better speaker. It actually makes me confident enough to stray from my speech, because I know I have a rehearsed speech as a safety net incase the free-style speech starts to crumble, or my nerves start to affect my thinking. Sarcasm can be a useful tool to help prove a point; however, it can also come off as rude or belittling. Occasionally I do not present my sarcasm clearly, causing people to believe I am trying to be rude. If you haven?t I highly suggest that you do because it will increase your ability to communicate with other human beings and just make it easier. Today, I will be talking about a couple of abilities that you can greatly improve by taking a simple introductory course in public speaking. I will be talking about the importance of a good attention getter, a clear presentation of your points, and eye contact with the audience.
During my demonstration speech, I was affected by my speech anxiety. Some of the viewable symptoms were the shaking of my hands and also the stuttering of speech. I was able to control myself and relax after I started getting into my information. I did use some of the suggested relaxation techniques to relieve my anxiety. Before I got up to speak I thought confident of myself to help give me courage and confidence.
In life, we rarely have the chance for a do-over, but I feel like returning to college is mine. Throughout high school, my grades were never above average and until about a couple of years ago I considered myself to be unintelligent. What I failed to see was my level of commitment. Once I began applying myself, the grades earned reflected that. This concept coincides to my public speaking ability. Many students, including myself, walk into a speech class thinking that it will be the Easy A of the semester and quite frankly I devoted a good amount of time and hard work to earn my A’s and B’s for this course. Overall, my public speaking growth in terms of listenability were influenced by the following: the strategy keys in correctly engaging the audience; the structure keys appropriate for a speech versus a paper; the support keys by continually engaging the audience; and finally the style keys by practicing the use of body language and reducing the verbal junk.
Over the recent four months in Communication 1402 class, I have addressed three formal speechs and completed a number of chapters in the corresponding textbook “Communication Works”. This course of Communication aims to provide general information what public speaking is and how to address a public speaking. Recalling back the experience during the processes of completing the Speech to Imform, Speech to Persuade, and Group Presentation, I will draw a conclusion about this course and these three presentations in five aspects, comprising my previous perception of public speaking before this course; learning from the Speech to Inform; the goal and evaluation of Speech to Persuade; learning from the Group Presentation; the most important thing learned from this course.
Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to the audience without making any judgments since every person was entitled to a different opinion and views about things.

I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. For as long as I can remember, public speaking has always been one of my greatest weaknesses. Whether it’s a simple in-class presentation or a speech in front of an auditorium filled with people, I can barely get my words out from the anxiety and stress.
