A rising issue across America is child obesity. With physical education many youths can accomplish minimal activity requirements ,designated by the federal government, to counteract obesity. As a result, students’ health will not be jeopardized by obesity, heart problems and diabetes. Because of this, high schools should require their students to take physical education.
Physical education benefits students in many ways including physical health, mental health, and social skills. Health benefits include: weight control, longevity, and a reduced chance of cardiovascular disease. Mental benefits include improvement in academics, higher self-esteem, development of personal goals, and gaining a multicultural perspective.
Medical and scientific data on physical activity show that physical education is healthy. A recent study suggested physical education lowers the chance of coronary artery disease, diabetes, and other illnesses. (CDC 3). Consequently students would be absent less often from school because of illnesses. That means students will not to fall behind in studies and live a healthier life. Another way physical education benefits wellness is requiring students to exercise (Le Masurier 4). Exercise is a critical aspect of not becoming obese or overweight. Since physical education is, by definition, physical, thus it prevents obesity and promotes overall fitness. Requiring students to participate in physical education is a good way to help them reach the minimal exercise requirements designated by the American Federal government.
Social benefits are achieved through physical education. For instance, physical education develops social skills such as cooperative skills, self-esteem, concentration, and a multicultural perspective (Le Masurier 2). These skills become helpful in the workplace, group projects, or academic settings. The result is projects may be finished faster and work productivity increased. Being able to finish projects and being more productive improves a student's performance. In Guy Le Masurier's report, he maintains that "promotion of regular amounts of appropriate physical activity now" will encourage physical activity later in life. If high students are exposed to physical education, they will more likely choose a healthier life as an adult resulting in a less of a chance of disease and greater chance of success at work. Then with a healthier life style an adult sets a proper example for adolescents to be active.

John F Kennedy once said, “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” He believed that a person who has conditioned their body will exceed when striving towards intellectual achievements. Parents across America have seen the influence that physical exercise can have on students. After school physical education programs, such as sports, not only condition the students to maintain physical health, they also work with teachers to make sure the mind is also being conditioned through learning. Students who participate in school sports are required to maintain their grades to academic standards to be able to participate in the activity. Even though many people would agree that physical education is important to a student’s health and learning process, schools across America are still suffering budget cuts that directly affect the physical education programs and hinder the amount of resources schools have to educate students about physical education. In some cases programs have been removed from schools entirely due to the tremendous cuts in school funding. Physical education programs in schools should not suffer from budget cuts because they support making positive life choices, the exercise is good for an active brain, and being physically fit is important for children as they grow into adults.
The purpose of my proposal is to request that physical education be made mandatory at Salida Elementary school. Children are not getting an adequate amount of activity during the school year. Obesity in children is on the rise in the United States. Therefore, we need to teach children how to make healthier decisions while they are young so they will have the tools to live a healthy lifestyle.
Fitness education is extremely important especially in a school setting because it is an integral part of the total education of every child in Kindergarten through Grade 12.
