The Importance of Photosynthesis and What it Does for Life
Life according to scientists is “the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death, also the way of life of a human being or animal.”("Life,”) In order for one to have life, one must have the nine characteristics to be considered a living thing. These nine characteristics are; all living things are made up of cells, living things are able to reproduce, living thing use energy, maintain homeostasis, respond and adapt to the environment, grow and develop, have a life span, evolve over time, and are interdependence. All of the nine characteristics have one thing in common, something that is needed for all living things to use, even if they do not know it. This beautiful thing that all living things should value is photosynthesis. Without photosynthesis there wouldn’t consist humans, animals, insects, and most importantly life!

We as a society should take care of our environment. We can recycle more, stop using harmful gases to produce the luxury that we take for granted, shelter the trees, get rid of cigarettes, use solar energy to power our houses, and clean up the garbage on the streets. Going green is the right thing to do, because it not only makes our environment look healthy, but helps us as a human race survive and live longer. Without photosynthesis there is no earth, we have take care of our environment not because it is the right thing to do, but just as we depend on photosynthesis for life, photosynthesis depend on us to survive!
The majority of life on Earth depends on photosynthesis for food and oxygen. Photosynthesis is the conversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen using the sun’s light energy (Campbell, 1996). This process consists of two parts the light reactions and the Calvin cycle (Campbell, 1996). During the light reactions is when the sun’s energy is converted into ATP and NADPH, which is chemical energy (Campbell, 1996). This process occurs in the chloroplasts of plants cell. Within the chloroplasts are multiple photosynthetic pigments that absorb light from the sun (Campbell, 1996).

So, after learning about what photosynthesis is and how it truly works is something that is remarkable and how plants are really the only living thing that uses this process. Next, is cellular respiration which uses these organic compounds and Oxygen will be used in a process called glycolysis which creates two ATP. Then, a process called the Krebs cycle uses a molecule called acetyl CoA to produce 4 Co2, 2 ATP, 6 NADH, and 2 FADH2. These products will then be transported to the ETC which will then produce more ATP which will be used as energy and will produce H2O. Overall, the most important thing to know is that the products of photosynthesis, organic compounds and O2, are reactants in cellular respiration which produces the reactants of photosynthesis, Co2 and H2O. Both processes rely on the other, without one, the other will not work which is why Biosphere 2 failed which I will explain
