The Importance of a Library
I had the opportunity to interview Jennifer Ashby. She has been the director of the Asotin County Library since February of 2001. She oversees just about everything that goes on in the library. She is in charge of budgets, facilities, personnel, collections, technology, programs, services, and public relations. She gave me a lot of great information on the history and current events of the library.
Before the original library was built in 1913, books were sent from an Episcopal congregation in Vermont to the Episcopal Church in Clarkston. A library of sorts was set up in the basement of the church. More and more books were purchased and this space was eventually outgrown. The books were then moved to the parsonage next door and the living room was turned into the new library, which was outgrown as well. The family grew tired of people coming in and out of their living room to browse the books, so a Carnegie library was built on the corner of Chestnut and Sixth in 1913. Eighty years later, the current location on Sycamore Street was constructed.
An interesting event that has happened in the time that Jennifer has worked at the library is a big windstorm that nearly destroyed the building. In order to prepare the library for the construction of a mezzanine, a floating wall was installed on the south side of the building. In February of 2008, a heavy windstorm struck the valley. The wall separated slightly from the others, leaving spider web-like cracks three-eighths of an inch wide all over the surface. The library had to close for three months for repairs. Another unusual occurrence was a sinkhole next to the building that caused flooding and damage in November 2013.

...he also wants people to know that the library has more to offer than just Internet and provides equal access. The library spends a lot of money on their online databases and one off-the-wall resource that people may not know about is their information about auto care. They also give advice on job applications, resumes, research and genealogy. One of the goals of the library is to bring culture to our area. They often have exhibits and displays about history and other ways of life. They even have foreign film nights.
Overall, the library is very important for our community. It offers a wealth of information and resources for all generations. Jennifer Ashby provided a lot of helpful materials and she loves where she works. She wants everyone to understand how vital libraries are to education and society. The King County Library System is the fifth largest library system in circulation in the United States. The current director of the KCLS, Bill Ptacek, started with the organization three years ago and is in the process of working towards a new strategic plan titled "The Year 2000 Plan, which has a long-term goal of integrating all the resources of the library system equally and to coordinate all the efforts to ensure it was providing the best possible service to the community. In the three years, Ptacek worked to expand the mission to cover services for the community to include children, life-long learning, career development, and literacy (Chell, 1996, pg.2). The reworking of the mission and services of KCLS was in full swing, but there were
Speaking with the Assistant Village Manager, Maggie Jablonski, and a Trustee, Chris Prochno, gave me insight into their daily lives in Elk Grove Village. They were very open and welcoming to the idea of an interview and made me feel comfortable during the process. The most difficult aspect was being put in contact with them for the interview. I had to schedule the interviews with the Executive Coordinator. She was very helpful and easy to work with, even though it took the most time.
...rary as posed by the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee. While it does not offer any services of a traditional library such as reference help, etc., the searchable full-text documents provide quick, easy access to information that once had to be tediously skimmed by hand. Anyone needing reference information or access to classic literature would be remiss not to employ Bartleby.com’s resources.

Dana agrees that reading literature is important to civil, personal, and economic health. With many citizens ignoring literature, they are missing out on the knowledge that it grants. She believes that “it is time to bring literature and other art forms into discussion of public policy”. She wants more literature to be read in schools and encourage more people to read. When people see that they are missing out on the benefits of reading, they will be encouraged to read more.
You can cross the Bloomfield Bridge to reach many of those places – the bridge was constructed in 1914. Along the streets of Bloomfield itself, you’ll find a few local branches of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, which is one of the country’s oldest library systems. When you explore the local streets, you’ll see homes that date back as far as the 1800s.
The article “The North West London Blues” argues that public libraries still remain an important part of the society and should be preserved. There is no doubt that she is, in fact, a part of the minority who has the same opinion due to the reason that most people tend to prefer electronics over physical copy of books, especially the younger ones. Therefore, it is important for the author to use persuasive methods to gain more support. The author, Zadie Smith, uses evidence, reasonings, and stylistic elements in order to gain support.
The Janesville Public Library, originally was constructed in 1964 to meet the needs of a growing community. The newly constructed 41,000-square-foot building, located at 316 S. Main Street, would cost nearly $8 million to complete. Don and Gerry Hedberg would donate in total $4.66 million, while the rest of the capital came from local businesses and taxpayers. Because of the generous donation from Don and Gerry, the library officially changed its name to the Hedberg Public Library (Hedberg Public Library).
On 13rd of October, at 3:57p.m., I found a seat next to the ceiling window on the ground floor in the San Diego Public Library and started my observation. The whole floor is surrounded by the ceiling windows which allow the allow luminance of sunlight to shine deeply into the library. My location was facing both the children’s library and the area which serves a branch of CD and DVDs. On that day, the library was also holding a mini exhibition names as the “Guardian Spirit Sacred Sculpture from the Continent of African”. Even though there are three wooden bookshelfs displayed orderly between my location and the children library, I can still clearly observe my target who is located in the children library.
The present Library of Congress had a difficult time getting started in its early stages. Originally located in the United States Capitol building between 1806 and 1814(U.S. Government, 1), a fire caused the Library to be relocated to a temporary hotel location. Soon it was replaced into the north wing of the Capitol, and then into the center of the west front (U.S. Government, 2). Unfortunately, another disastrous fire burned the Library and yet again it had to be repaired. The Librarian of Congress at this time in 1865, Ainsworth Rand Spofford, realized the Library was expanding to the point where it would soon need it's own separate building from the Capitol. He drew up an architectural plan in 1872 and presented it to Congress who authorized it.

One of the primary goals behind the creation of public libraries is their expected ability to help minimize the gap between the rich and the poor, or the educated and the illiterate (Jaeger, Gorham, Sarin, & Bertot, 2013). To achieve this, libraries needed to host content that was curated to help provide educational material that also represented the social norms and values (Weigand, 1999). In other words, libraries were expected to serve as the hotspot where the public could educate themselves using resources that were not readily available elsewhere. However, as the history of libraries in the US suggests, the way public libraries provided resource to their users have taken several transformations reflecting the influence not only of those
It is through the work of women such as Ms. Lori and Ms. Elizabeth that our community is able to thrive. The library teaches those how to be independent and strong without pushing them away. It provides skills and courage to complete one may not have had the ability to complete alone. The courses and activity it provides allow the community to interact and connect with each other. For those who do not have the means necessary to travel or to learn, they provide them at lower prices, so that these individuals have same chances as others to reach their dreams and spread their wings to fly. The classes the provide give hands on learning that many cannot receive without the proper money. From Mommy in me to the cooking class, Rogers memorial Library offers a world of culture and education to create an abundance of joy and passion. In world of technology they provide a surplus of knowledge for one to take home and thoroughly enjoy without the attachment of mechanics at all times. Its community activities that such as September Fest and Multi-Cultural Day show how it will always be there for anyone. The flood of material that resulted forced the construction of a new building that opened in 1897.A new age for the library was guided by the opening of the Jefferson building and The Main Reading room. Special format collections were separated from the book collections and the readers could access them in different locations of the library. Some of these format collections were maps, prints, music, and manuscripts. The continued growth of the library’s collection required two new buildings at the location of the library, Capitol Hill.
