Relationships can build our brains. Social networking tends to allow for a broad sense of community. “Social relationships play important roles in childhood development, with social skill mastery predicting important social outcomes. Children must master several aspects of social competence and self-control (self-esteem, social anxiety, aggression control, and general social skills) in order to adequately perform in social settings.”(Harmon, 3) There are many positive ways to build up real-life relationship via the Internet such as real-time video chats, photo or video sharing, and collaborative editing managements. Especially, if you live far away from your families and friends, these social software allow you to keep in touch with your contacts, and you will be able to contact everyone at once without having to repeat.
However, Social software definitely has drawbacks. Though Internet, it is possible to observe inappropriate behaviors. Such exposure and potential for imitating maladaptive behavior could invade our off-line life. “What has become of the English language?”(White, 2) “We’re starting to lose the English language…Especially with texting and how people abbreviate words now.” (Osmundson, 1) Because of this preoccupation with texting, younger people have more difficulty writing professionally when they need to. Does communication via social media have a negative impact on the importance of face-to-face interactions? In Jenna Wortham's article, I Had a Nice Time with You Tonight, on the App, this is the central issue. It is easy for a person coming from a simpler generation to agree with this particular statement. On the contrary, if a person coming from this technologically advanced generation were to be asked this question, the individual may have a completely different opinion. Wortham, a credible writer for the New York Times, appeals to the younger and more technologically sound generation. She gathers information from educators and from her own experiences and drafts a thesis. Technology has been around for quite some time and continues to improve with time. According to dictionary.com, social network is “an online community of people with a common interest who use a website or other technologies to communicate with each other and share information.” With all of this information being shared their can be quite a few of pros and cons that come along with social networking. Also, the history shouldn 't be ignored and how it has really came along way in such a short amount of time.
Social networking has increasingly had a huge impact on society. Technology has opened the door to a vast amount of information and to the ability to relay that information to practically anybody at anytime and anywhere. People are constantly checking their email, updating their status on Facebook, sending tweets on Twitter, instant messaging, and texting. The debate of whether social networking actually connects us or keeps us apart is a continuous one. In the case of Steven Pinker, his essay “Mind over Mass Media” argues that media technologies have a positive effect on mental development. In contrast, Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Discontents” asserts that technology has a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. Although Pinker makes many excellent points on how technology is improving intelligence and Turkle provides exceptional ideas of how technology is damaging to relationships, neither Pinker nor Turkle provides the best answer to this question due to their lack of credibility and inclusion of logical fallacies. Instead, we should use the Internet to its full potential, while being aware of the risks and dangers that come with social networking.
Social networking has made its way into American culture quickly and is more prevalent now than ever before. Many people have different views on the relevance and benefits of social networking, whether they are from a positive or negative standpoint. Nevertheless, social media and networking are a part of our American lifestyles as a whole. As a Computer Information Systems major and studying the foundations and composition of computer applications, I would like to research the effects that social networks have on undergraduate students attending an Historically Black College or University. In order to conduct this research, a study and survey must be conducted to determine whether social networking positively or negatively affects grade point averages by recording the number of social networks students are actively using and the number of hours spent on these applications in comparison to grade point averages.
The Internet plays mays many roles in our busy technology driven lives today, without it many streamlined tasks would once again become mundane and bothersome. Since our lives have become so technology driven and Internet based it is no surprise that social media websites have become increasingly popular, first among young adults but now across the entire age spectrum. It is estimated that 30% of the world has Internet access and uses it in a daily manner. Of this 30% it is estimated that 72% of them use social media or networking sites (Brenner). All of this Internet usage almost most certainly has had an effect of interpersonal relationships, the absolute fact that at any given moment you can send a quick picture or write a fast phrase that all your friends and family can see is utterly bizarre. There is a great deal of research done on this topic because it is an ever increasing phenomenon because more and more people are getting access to the internet and in turn signing up for social medial websites. Has all this technology come at a price? With this huge social media frenzy will there ever be time for strong face-to-face relationships anymore, or would we rather communicate online where we can reach countless people with one simple stroke of the keyboard? Ultimately what effect has dependence on the Internet and social media had on our stable interpersonal relationships that we have been forming ever since we learned to speak?
As you can see, in a society where interacting and over-sharing online is a trend, you probably speak to friends and family through electronic devices and social media than face-to-face. Many surveys have been addressed that one in four college students and adults would spend more time socializing online than they do in person. Whenever you attend a classroom, party or club, you can see that there is someone with their head down looking at the phone, ignore the group and reject to speak in a conversation. Moreover, if they have free time in the weekend to hang out, they tend to want to stay at home and chat or text through social media. As a result, the relationships is deteriorating,
There are many positive sides to forming relationships via the internet. Online communities may offer a safe environment for the user to feel welcome and among peers due to commonalities between themselves. Using the internet to form relationships may benefit the user by providing mental stimulation, an increase in self esteem due to receiving praise from others, and by comparing oneself to others (Zywica & Danowski, 2008, p.8).
The advantages of using the social network make it an excellent learning tool through dialogues and collaborations. Class Materials and online cooperation among students foster the creation of a class-room-like learning environments which has many potential benefits that they can acquire. The communication and interaction in learning is reinforced by adding the social networking to the school community; therefore, it results in the overall enhancement of the learning environment.
While with the constant use of these social technologies, less people are communicating in person, this type of technology might be doing more harm than good because with the rise of websites such as Facebook, social networking may be on the verge of replacing traditional personal interactions for the next generation. Social networks were created for the sole purpose of helping individuals communicate. There are many other reasons that these technologies are used, but communication is still the number one. It is not only changing how we communicate, but how we interact with each other in daily life.
Socializing is not just talking face to face, it’s our ability to interact, learn, and create original thoughts. Technology is hindering today’s youth and their ability to socialize is affecting their capacity to read, write, and communicate. Today’s youth depend on careful considerations for the implementation of technology. Our youth do not have the capability to convey their emotions through the use of technology, understand sadness, happiness or joy through simple text or emails. Communicating through the use of text, chat, and social network sites is lost using abbreviations and slang, inhibiting the use of the Standard English language.
