Relational Impact
Relationships can build our brains. Social networking tends to allow for a broad sense of community. “Social relationships play important roles in childhood development, with social skill mastery predicting important social outcomes. Children must master several aspects of social competence and self-control (self-esteem, social anxiety, aggression control, and general social skills) in order to adequately perform in social settings.”(Harmon, 3) There are many positive ways to build up real-life relationship via the Internet such as real-time video chats, photo or video sharing, and collaborative editing managements. Especially, if you live far away from your families and friends, these social software allow you to keep in touch with your contacts, and you will be able to contact everyone at once without having to repeat.
However, Social software definitely has drawbacks. Though Internet, it is possible to observe inappropriate behaviors. Such exposure and potential for imitating maladaptive behavior could invade our off-line life. “What has become of the English language?”(White, 2) “We’re starting to lose the English language…Especially with texting and how people abbreviate words now.” (Osmundson, 1) Because of this preoccupation with texting, younger people have more difficulty writing professionally when they need to. Many Americans also feel that it hasn’t helped to cultivate social ties. According Christine Carter, author of Raising Happiness, sociologist at UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, and consultant to New York Life, “About one in two (48%) said that social networking makes no positive impact on how individuals interact with each other in society.
