The current generation is living in the digital age, where technology has blended with daily activity to become a way of life. Kids are operating electronic devices practically moments after being born. College students tend to take notes on laptop in class and utilize varies sources that are provided online. Indeed, technology has brought convenience for social communication and to take the learning experience to another level. The technology has encouraged multitasking in order to process the abundant information. However, the ultimate effect of technology on the human cognitive system is a controversial issue in the psychological field. From my perspective, the collaboration of technology has a negative impact on the human’s cognitive system because multitasking reduces productivity and shortens people attention span.
A recent research conducted by the University of Michigan indicates that the human brain does not multitask. In the experiment, scientists used an MRI scanner to photograph people’s mental process when performing several tasks simultaneously. The result shows that the brain has to switch among tasks, which means the brain will set the previous task aside before processing the new task. The times for switching are not obvious if the tasks are simple, but according to Weissman, even simple tasks can overwhelm the brain when they are processed together (Jon Hamilton, 2008). No doubt, technology is increasingly important in modern world. Technology brings dozens of conveniences to daily life, but the side effects of these conveniences shouldn’t be ignored. Multitask is a misconception that should be carefully address and the use of digital devices such as computers and television will be distracting and decrease people’s attention. All the researches above serve as evidences to be careful with multimedia in order to inform readers on the potential negative impact of technology.

In “Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of our Era”, neurologist Dr. Richard Restak examines what effect technology has on our brains, and posits that technology, as well as the increasing demand on our brains to perform multiple tasks at once, is causing a decrease In “‘Plug In’ Better: A Manifesto”, technology writer and commentator Dr. Alexandra Samuel states that she believe that there is a middle ground between completely “plugging in” and “unplugging”. She states that we should approach our online interactions in the same ways we approach our offline ones.
In Hermann Maurer’s, “Does the Internet Make Us Stupid?” he shows that Michael Merzenich, a neuroscientist and professor at the University of California in San Francisco is “profoundly worried about the cognitive consequences of the constant distraction and interruptions the Net bombards us with. The long term effect on the quality of our intellectual lives could be ‘deadly’”(Maurer 49). If an expert in the brain field is worried, then others should also be more cautious about the devices they use. Mark Becker suggests that “media multitasking may be uniquely associated with deficits in basic cognitive processes such as the ability to successfully filter out irrelevant information and ignore distraction” (Becker 132). People do not give one task their full attention, they are always multitasking such as doing homework while texting and listening to music. People think multitasking will help them complete tasks quicker; however, in the long run they are changing the functions of their brain and even damaging it. He carefully elaborated a longitudinal research and carefully controlled any possible variables affecting children between ages one and three. At age seven, the parents of these children were interviewed about their child, and using this interview, Christakis was able to find behavior problems among the children. Technology is prevalent in our personal and professional lives. Everywhere we go; there are multiple screens and multiple distractions. How is productivity when being inundated with information and devices? There seems to be some bragging rights associated with multitasking, however many would argue the opposite. The following examines how multitasking negatively influences personal and professional productivity and how we should make changes to reduce digital distractions.
In April 2004, a journal, Pediatrics, described that the greater the amount of television watched by a toddler, the greater risk for him to develop an attention disorder later on in childhood, as described by researchers at a children's hospital in Seattle, Washington. “For each extra hour per day of TV time, the risk of concentration difficulties increases by 10 percent” (Sprinkle 1). A child is more likely to be diagnosed with an attention disorder like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) when they view a television program. ADHD and ADD both effect the child's ability to stay attentive to one thing for a normal amount of time, which will, in turn, make the comprehension of the education he receives tougher than that of a child who has a normal attention span.

She shows that often with multitasking, people tend to lose focus, lack work quality, have an increase in stress, and in the end she gives a solution to all these problems. Tugend conveys her points by using understandable language, a clear division of subjects, and many reliable sources, making her article cogent.

Because of the accessibility we find that, in our tech-savvy culture, multitasking has not just become an art form of sorts, but rather an expectation. In the article “Multitasking Can Make You Lose…Um…Focus,” Alina Tugend sets out to explore the idea that although multitasking appears to show productivity, it could be doing the opposite. Throughout her article, Tugend uses studies done by neurologists and psychologists to show how in a world that sees multitasking as an expectation it has actually made us less efficient. She proposes, through studies, that although you might be working on multiple tasks it is as if you’re playing tennis with multiple balls (Tugend, 725).

There are many facts that show how children are affected by television. The most obvious is the effects that television has on the brain. 'Television interferes with the development of intelligence, thinking skill and imagination.';(LimiTv) A huge element of thinking is taking from what you already know and deciding how it applies in different situation. School makes you do this, but television does not. Michael and Sheila Cole, sociologist, say that 'Children socialized to learn from television had lower than normal expectations about the amount of mental effort required to learn from written texts, and tended to read less and perform relatively poorly in school.';(Development of Children 24) Which means that it takes very little effort to follow a television show and kids are raised on television believe that it takes less effort to learn from television rather than books because they have been 'spoon-fed'; information by television. 'Opportunities for a child's imagination to develop are also denied by habitual viewing.'; (Neural Activity and the Growth of the Brain) Children need some unstructured time to allow imagination skills to form by thinking about a book or story, a conversation, or an event.
Technology has completely changed the culture of this world. We live in a world where our lives are constantly in motion because of portable devices. Different forms of technology have changed the way and the places that information is accessed. Fast entertainment is now the center of everyone's day. Mostly everything in our lives has something to do with entertainment. We are all seeking and craving entertainment all throughout the day just like fast food. Reading the article “Fast Entertainment and Multitasking in an Always-on World” by S. Craig Watkins, he share his views about multitasking with technology and the unlimited access to fast entertainment. People always feel the need to be connected and get their few minutes of media for the day, with technology being more accessible, more people are media consuming, and the youths are accessing the media more often and tend to access multiple things at once.
The popular belief that multitasking is efficient, and the new-age generation is hard wired for multitasking, is highly misguided. Truth is, effective multitasking is an oxymoron. It’s not uncommon to see a person texting while walking down the street, listening to music while doing homework, or staring at a computer screen with multiple tabs and windows open. It’s hard not to multitask, given the amount of work people have to do and the non-stop information being thrown at them. People will do it as a force of habit; they think it will help them accomplish more tasks in a shorter time period. More often than not, they find it being the complete opposite. The brain can only process one activity at a time; instead, it switches gears, which takes time, reduces accuracy, distracts, and hinders creative thoughts. So, the real question should be: is multitasking actually worth the time? No, multitasking negatively affects people in all aspects of their life.
The impact of technology on our individual lives and culture has been a general issue of our time. In her essay “In the Beginning Was the Word,” Christine Rosen analyzes the effects of the image-dominated modern society and its influence on our daily lives, as well our comprehension skills of complex literature acquired through the years of human history. In “Three Tweets for the Web” Tyler Cowan analyzes the effects of a new cultural medium of our society and its effectiveness on multitasking as well as increasing intellectual satisfaction of our highly literal modern society. Rosen and Cowan both present the evidence that our society is in a midst of a culture transition, and printed world is being a less central part of our lives. This cultural transition affects our daily activities in many ways; such as, stimulating distractions, duration of attention span and our efficiency at multitasking.
