The Impact of Climate Change and Hostile International Relations on the Philippines

The Republic of the Philippines, an island country located in the Malay archipelago in Southeast Asia, including 7,107 islands, known as Philippine Archipelago, has a total area of nearly 300,000 square kilometers. The country, named "Las Islas Felipinas" after King Philip II of Spain, fell prey to Spanish colonialism in 1565 (Jezek, 2006). In nowadays, Philippines is still a developing country, therefore it has a numbers of problems that can lead itself to collapse, referring to the 5 point framework that can lead society to collapse of Jared Diamond, which is human impact on the environment, climate change, relationship with friendly society, relationship with hostile society and society’s response to the problem (Diamond,2003). This essay will analyse that 2 most serious problems that can lead philippines to collapse and solutions to those problems. Which the problems in this case is climate change and relationships with hostile society.

Overall situation of Philippines in the present time can be conclude as a country that is facing a high risk of collapse because of these factors. The Philippines is base not a petroleum-rich region, but the land in the region is full of many minerals. There are an estimated 21.5 billion metric tons of metal deposits and approximately 19.3 billion metric tons of nonmetal minerals in the ground. Nickel is the most plentiful deposit in the Philippines, while iron and copper are also present in a massive amounts.(Morgan, nd) As a result, there is a human impact on the environment in terms of mining.
