For centuries, scientists and energy experts from all over the world have been making efforts to look for alternative resources in order to solve human being’s energy crisis. Consequently, a great number of renewable energy source have been discovered, including solar power, nuclear power, wind-generated power and hydroelectric power. This essay aims at giving some basic knowledge on hydroelectric power technology with focuses on its impacts on environment. Firstly, a brief introduction of hydroelectricity will be given, followed by some discussions regarding its effects on environment, then a conclusion will be drawn based on the discussions and some recommendations for the future at the end.
Hydroelectricity is a renewable energy source that uses the energy of running water to generate electrical energy, which will not produce any green house gases. Gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide contributes towards green house gases, and they can be easily produced by human activities including burning fossil fuels for energy, land clearing and agriculture (Greenhouse gas emissions 2013). It is evident that, with the development of modern society, the amount of greenhouse gas that has been released into the atmosphere increased drastically. As a result, countries are seeking alternative energy such as hydroelectricity that is not only environmental friendly, but also more effective in generating electricity.

The natural resource that I am writing this paper on is coal. Coal is a cheap, dirty fossil fuel which we burn to create power. Coal is the most abundant in North America and in Russia, including the area around it. China also has a fairly good amount of coal in it too. Coal, like all of the other fossil fuels is nonrenewable and will eventually run out, in the not so near future. Coal is very important to many of the countries of the world. The countries that use the most coal are China, the United States, India, Russia, and Japan. These five countries “account for 76% of total global coal use.” (World Coal Association, 2014).
Energy is the basic necessity of daily life. Nowadays, dependence on fossil fuels for energy needs becoming lower in numerous countries due to the potential of renewable energy to supply sustainable energy to the huge populations in many developing countries who are short of clean and continues energy. Generally, renewable energy can be defined as energy that is derived from natural resources which are constantly replenished and theoretically inexhaustible. Fossil fuels on the other hand can be described as energy that cannot be renewed and will eventually diminish. Thus, in many developing countries renewable energy is the alternative energy to replace non-renewable energy or commonly known as fossil fuels. In addition, according to Sorensen (2004), there is a greater demand for renewable energy sources nowadays due to the uncertainty of fuel price rise in living expenses. Commonly, there are many types of renewable energy available in our world such as wind power, biomass energy, solar energy, hydroelectric power and geothermal energy. However, the main three example of renewable energy are hydroelectric power, solar and biomass energy (Refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).

Hydropower relies on the water cycle and is a clean fuel source; it doesn’t pollute the environment like plants that burn fossil fuels. Even though global climate change presents a massive problem, there are many proposed solutions to fix or delay it. These theories range from creating a giant sun shield in space to the simple practice of “reduce, reuse, and recycle” (Gray, 2009). However, the most effective solution is to find different sources of fuel to power our day to day lives. The earth is in need of renewable, effective, and long-lasting fuels. Global warming can be slowed through the use of renewable energy as it is versatile, clean, a good investment, and can easily be put into place in several different climates and environments.
In chapter thirteen of our book, Environment by Raven and Berg, it shows us just how important renewable energy sources are. Currently the United States of America thrives on the use of fossil fuels and nuclear power. The main problems with these types of fuel are that they are both limited and can be extremely harmful to our environment. They cause global warming, air pollution, acid rain, and oil spills (Environment), and not only that, but in the grand scheme of things, these sources really aren’t even that cheap of a fuel source. There are many alternatives to these all but outdated fuel sources.
