Hurricane Sandy was definitely a very difficult time for everyone in the northeast region. Initially I did not realize how hard it was going to hit us, because the previous year Hurricane Irene did not have such a strong effect on my town. Of course we did not leave the house, and there were a few fallen trees, however it did not affect us like Hurricane Sandy did.
Even though I wasn’t expecting a very severe hurricane, my parents still prepared for the worst. They requested me to come home and stay even though many of my friends were still on campus. I figured being with my family during this difficult time would make the most sense. When the hurricane hit initially we did not lose any electricity even though many families around us did. My sister and I decided to end our boredom by watching random television shows, and just as we found something that interested us, the power went out. We were hoping it was just a quick power shortage, and that the power would be back within the hour. We were in for a big surprise. We did not have warm water or power for five days.
For those five days we charged our laptops and phones inside of my mom’s car, and used them until they had to be charged again and again. During that time, we went on a hunt for all of our old DVDs in our basement, and brought them all up one by one to watch on the laptop. We would listen to the radio from time to time to find out if there were any updates regarding the power outage. The entire time I couldn’t wait for everything to get back to normal so I could return to school and start enjoying my life again.
It was one afternoon when my mom and I were in the car listening to the radio, when I realized that we didn’t have it nearly as bad as people in other ...

Hurricane Sandy occurred in the year 2012. The formation of this storm began as early as October 11, 2012. It traveled through different areas of the southwestern Caribbean, and eventually created devastation to the eastern coast of the United States of America on October 29, 2012 (Blake, Kimberlain, Berg, Cangialosi & Beven II, 2013) (Manuel, 2013).
“When I saw my house three weeks after the storm, I was glad it stood but I knew it was time for change. Now five years later, I have learned that for me to enjoy the beauty of this place, there is a cost to bear. I love this place and am here to stay, but I have to invest more than I had imagined. The hurricane has greatly affected our lives but not only in a bad way.”
Hurricane Sandy took place in October 2012. According to Galarneau, Davis, and Melvyn, “ Sandy was a late season tropical cyclone over the the North Atlantic, that created a demolishing storm surge from southern New Jersey to Rhode Island” (4296). Sandy evolved from an African tropical wave that connected with a large area of low pressure. Mixed with high humidity of the southwest Caribbean, Sandy first made landfall over Jamaica. Next, it made landfall on Cuba. It continued its course through the Bahamas. Rather than head east, Sandy proceeded on North. Earth’s rotation acts to put more vertical spin into the atmosphere the closer it gets to pole, this contributed to the growth of Sandy. However, once it got further north, Sandy transitioned to...

It made landfall as a category three storm. Around six A.M., 127 mph winds hit the gulf areas and caused major flooding. Most notoriously slamming New Orleans! In New Orleans, the levees that held the water broke leaving millions of gallons of water spewing right towards the city. It left thousands homeless and forced people to leave their home and flee to the superdome - which inhabited over 14,000 people. In Biloxi, debris was washed up on beaches, and was really a scary sight to see! Fatalities for Hurricane Katrina reached to 1,833 deaths and some bodies were even untouched for days. The storm was the costliest natural disaster weighing in at about 160 billion dollars. After the Hurricane, the population never grew the same as it was with most people fearing another Hurricane would strike again leaving them homeless for a second
My family and I have been working all day, which is not something a teenager is eager to do on a Friday. I usually start my Fridays off by attending high school, then spending the rest of the evening at the tennis courts with some friends. However, today is not a normal Friday, Hurricane Harvey is predicted to hit my city, Houston, in no time. My family and I, consisting of my Mom, Dad, and younger brother Bryan have been preparing our house to resist the storm. My Mom made my brother and I stay home from school which is understandable after watching the news. Harvey was categorized as a level four hurricane with winds up to 130 mph so we needed to begin precautions as soon as possible. We began by moving my Dads mattress into the living room along with pillows and plenty of blankets
No electricity and a zombie apocalypse occurring. How great. i feel like i'm in an episode of revolution that crossed with the walking dead if you've ever seen those shows. I had to leave that rental car behind and start walking. it's scary being alone, makes me feel like im the only one left sometimes but that's not true, there has to be more people out there. I stopped at a local shop entering it carefully, it is really dark so I pull out that flashlight and carefully make my way to the tent section. The shop is trashed, broken glass on the ground, spiders crawling on the floors. I get back to the camping section and grab a tent and start to make my way back, but I hear a low growling noise, I shine my flashlight in the corner and see five zombies, fizz coming out of their mouths and then they start to run towards me. I shriek and sprint as fast as my legs go until I reach the outdoors. I have realized in the few days that the apocolypse has occured that zombies dislike sunlight, they are not like vampires where they turn to dust if they step outside but they do dislike the sun. I catch my breath and begin to walk to find a place to sleep for the night. I keep thinking of my family and wondering if they are okay. I called my mom three times, but she never picked up so I stopped calling because my phone is at 25 percent and this is the last time I will ever be able to use it unless to power decides to magically come back
This was not only due to the size and devastation of the storm, but an effort by the federal government to better themselves in responding to natural disasters. The lesson was learned when the federal government was slow to call for response during hurricane Katrina years earlier. In the days immediately following Sandy’s impact, rescue missions were in full swing, rescuing trapped families in the New York Metropolitan area and Staten Island, mostly by use of helicopter. In January of 2013, three months after the storm, congress and the President passed legislation and signed the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act which provided $50 billion in to support rebuilding to the region (Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task
The natural disaster ,hurricane Betsy hit on September 9th, 1965 the day of my scheduled surgery . The day hurricane Betsy hit it was a category 2 hurricane. Out of all my children my youngest was sick and my oldest child was keeping an eye on the
I remember my family and friends preparing to leave their homes or to shelter in place, after being informed hurricane that Katrina was headed towards New Orleans. Most of them decided to leave and brave the traffic and the long hours of driving. Those who decided to stay and to shelter in place would later state that they would not do it again. Once those of us who evacuated to areas not in the projected
We drove for what felt like forever; Traffic was backed up for hours and it took us twice as long to get to a safe place than normal. We finally ended up in Arkansas and found a safe hotel. On August 29, 2005 the category 5 hurricane hit my hometown. I remember sitting on the hotel bed helplessly watching the news as the hurricane was taking place; all I could think about was if my dad and grandpa were ok. I was finally able to talk to my dad on the phone for a little while, and I can remember hearing the howling of the wind, and the claps of thunder and lightning in the background. I was terrified of what was going to happen; thinking back now I wish I would have never known. A couple of days passed and on August 31, 2005 we decided it was time to come home, and prepare ourselves for the damage done and the long road to
Day 1 of the power outage we had no school so Me, My mom, Jayden, and Michelle got into the car and started driving around to see what the storm did. So we pull off our road and we start driving not even a mile away we see a tree hanging from a power line!! We all were surprised. We keep driving until me reach a spot where a tree is in the middle of the side we were driving on. So we had to stop and wait till the cars pass so that we could go around the tree then turn around. We turned around then we drove to pine land and found trees ripped out of the ground and power lines on the ground. Michelle turned around cause we didn’t want to risk going over the power line and getting hurt. Then we go towards memorial school and I say can we go home
