Writing a speech is easy. Telling someone about a speech you have to give is easy. Practicing your speech is easy. Giving a speech is not. Through my public speaking class I learned a lot about the art of giving speeches, creating a logical outline of my speech, and a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of my public speaking ability. My overall strengths as a speaker are that I can maintain eye contact with an audience and can convey the passion I have for certain topics to my audience. My overall weaknesses are that I can get caught talking to fast, causing me to skip sentences or words, and my ability to create an outline for my speech. I will go through my informative and persuasive value speech looking at three different criteria’s, content, delivery and overall assessment, and asses myself thoroughly. Even though I do not have the audio to my informative speech, I can still assess my mannerisms and eye contact. When it came to the introductions of my speeches I used many different techniques. In my informative speech on how to vote in an election I used statistic like, “According to an article in the Huffington Post titled, “Youth Vote 2012 Turnout,” by Tyler Kingkade, only 19% of the voter turnout in the 2012 election was by people from the age of 18-25,” to provide my audience with a statement that was baffling and startling to catch their attention. In my persuasive value speech I did not have a topic as popular as voting for elections, so I had to familiarize my audience with players of Duke basketball and some history of their team. My persuasive value speech introductory sentence was necessary due to my audience’s lack of knowledge about Duke basketball and their program. In my conclusions, I used a very firm and act... ... middle of paper ... ...g better outlines and putting more time towards my outline. With a better outline I believe your speech skills will improve because you can implement places in your outlines to remind yourself to pause, emphasis certain points, use hand gestures at certain points. To achieve this I will spend more time on my outline and go into greater detail in my outline to make small points that can help me during my speech. Over the course of the semester I realized I’m very far from a perfect public speaker but I can aspire to become one. With the feedback I have received over the semester and from evaluating my strengths and weaknesses while looking at my delivery, content, and overall assessment, I can become a better public speaker and a better speaker overall. You words are valuable in the world of academia and even more valuable when you know what you’re doing with them.
Overall, the most important aspect to creating a good speech is making decisions based on what “the speaker (keeping in mind that at times the speaker is a character) wants to portray. Ethos, pathos, logos, rhetorical questions, repetition, metaphors and various other methods are merely tools and without
Knowing what I can do well is just important as knowing what needs improvement. My strongest attributes are being able to perform under pressure and multitasking. This is necessary to sell products and perform services that benefit the customer. The value of getting the job done correctly and on time correlates to returning customers and repeat business. My competitive advantage over others in the same industry is the high level of service we offer. I don’t just push a product on a client. I listen to what they want and need, make suggestions for the best available solutions; and I also help them with cost savings and environmentally friendly alternatives. One weakness I have and need to work on is public speaking. As I grow in my career and move into managerial leader positions, I will have a lot more opportunities to give speeches. I plan to work on my public speaking skills by practicing and making incremental changes to constantly improve. It’s not a matter of being shy in front of a group. It’s more of a point to be well prepared for the occasion and motivated to do a good job. To stay prepared for opportunities and change, I plan on continuing my education in the business field, and learning as much as possible about my job. I will also need to stay up-to-date with current issues in my external and internal
For the informative speech I chose to inform my audience about Muncie Indiana. I did this topic to get the attention of ball state students, and make them realize what an awesome place Muncie Indiana really is. I informed them on the history of Muncie to hopefully encourage them to get more involved in the community outside of classes. I feel that the students learned a lot about Muncie they would have never known. I do believe could have done a better job at making in more intriguing and kept their attention all the way through my speech. If I would have done this better I would have been able to sale the idea getting more involved with the city that brought thousands of students their college education.
Though I had some strong points in my informative speech, I still feel there was a lot I could improve upon. I could not recognize any vocalized pauses but I noticed that at certain points of speech where I would transition from one point to another, I would push my glasses up. I don’t remember if this was because my glasses were actually slipping down or because I was nervous. Also, after watching my video, I found that in the beginning of the speech I was swaying a lot, but because I was standing behind the table it wasn’t that noticeable. The one major thing I would change is my choice to stand behind the table. It was something I did unconsciously and out of habit of usually speaking behind a podium, and I did not notice I did it until
While watching my video I did notice that I was able to understand and clearly know what the main point was. I spoke in a clear and a tone loud enough for everyone to hear. The speech was organized very well, so one idea or thought flowed to the next. I don’t think I need to change anything in regards to my central idea being clear. I was satisfied with that part of the speech.
I believe that I did well speaking clearly, relating to the audience, and citing good information. While giving my speech, I was conciously reminding myself to speak with good diction, and to go at a pace slow enough for the audience to understand, yet fast enough so they are not bored. I also related to the audience. I showed them how my topic affects their every day lives and what our school would look like if our policies were different. I also pride myself on citing
Prior to giving this speech, I felt both nervous and prepared in regards to my presentation. I felt nervous simply because I dislike being under pressure, and I felt prepared because I had a completed outline which served as a plan for the delivery. I also had notecards to aid my performance. The goal that I had in mind for this speech was to better my delivery. I have a tendency to speak too quickly when presenting, and I also tend to stay rather flat and monotonous in tone. Stuttering/stumbling over my words also tends to be an issue. I tried to improve my chances of doing well by reciting the speech aloud a few times before recording as practice. I also made sure to write down what information went with each source on my notecards so that I would not pause in an attempt to remember which
After watching myself present my informative speech, there were plenty of bad habits that I needed to work on. I constantly said umm as a filler word, and it was plain to see why the audience requested I talked louder and slower. I also realized I used little emotion in my speech, and needed to perform more natural movements. Throughout the few weeks between my informative and persuasive speech, I practiced by speaking to myself and to my roommates. As I watched my persuasive speech video, in my opinion, I did improve on several areas, while others stayed fairly consistent.
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
The way we communicate can be very important in representing ourselves in our community. In the beginning, of the semester, we watched a movie regarding a royal member whom was looked down upon because of his verbal pauses. However, throughout the movie he learns to work with his speaking style. He may have not completely eliminated the flaw but, he did learn how to overcome and adjust with it is style of public speaking. Public speaking is very power it as the authority to make an audience shock, upset, surprised, disbelief, and even to become inspired. By using structure in a speech and applying ethos, pathos, and logos can create a deeper connection to the audience. Therefore, the most impactful part of a speech is its introduction. Such that if the speaker implies a power attention getter they are able to deliver their message successfully. In my class presentation, the times I won speaker of the day I noticed that within my speech the only reason why I was selected was because I provided a strong attention getter and because my voice was very loud and it had minimal of verbal pauses. I have learned that any speech can be delivered successfully when the elements of structure and practiced are present. For most of my presentation to prepare I would practice my speech by recording myself with a tape recorder and then replying. This allowed
Public speaking can be very tough for some people, but it could also come as ease for others. One may get anxiety or even gain confidence when speaking to a general audience. Public speaking is enhancing your communication skills in becoming a better speaker. Great public speaking is important for everyone, in any field. It is crucial to include key aspects of a speech such as good delivery, supportive material including relevant sources, use of technology ad ethical issues. While analyzing a speech given by Jacob Kraybill I was able to look for these characteristics in order to constructively critic his speech.
As stated in the name of the workshop, the three keywords needed to improve our speech are “Preparation, Practice, Performance.” The speakers also provided some helpful tips. For example, use mirror method, sample group audience and feedbacks, and video/recording in practicing. I’ll bear in mind these techniques and tips when I have to make a presentation.
Practice is a major role that needs to be played when it comes to presenting. Practicing, I feel gives you more confidence in your speech, and more preparation than if you were to not practice. Rehearsing before the speech then presenting makes you seem like you actually know what you are talking about even if the only reason you know all these facts is because of study and practicing. Practicing through my speech really helps me with my presentation, if I practice enough, I feel very confident to where I wouldn’t need t a paper to look at notes during the speech. This concept is important for anything. Practicing will always help you with any future task.
In order to successfully deliver an oral presentation such as a speech, the speaker must follow certain procedures to ensure his message can be conveyed clearly. Vast amounts of research are essential in order to acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to speak about a topic comfortably and answer any questions the audience might have during the course of the presentation. After acquiring such knowledge about the topic of the presentation the speaker will feel more confident, confidence is key in delivering speeches and other oral presentations because it makes the speaker look more credible and trustworthy. Lastly, the speaker must be fluid and eloquent with his words, the speaker must be able to sound clear and crisp while delivering their
People may have the desire to deliver effective presentations to their audience, whether it is for informative or persuasive reasons. However, speaking persuasively makes it more difficult to do so since the goal is to make others agree with a certain idea that can concern their beliefs and values. In order to attempt to make the audience listen attentively and sway towards the side being argued for, without being offensive, the speaker or student has several ethical obligations to be followed while making their persuasive speech.
