How Dance Works

“Those who dance are considered to be insane by those who cannot hear the music”. George Carlin wrote this because he knew how important it is to dance. Dance isn’t just something that’s done; it’s a way of life. It encourages people to express themselves and be who they truly are. It keeps people more mentally aware of the things in their life; it helps boost confidence, and it’s all possible by experiencing the different styles of dance.
Most people dance because it’s a way to express themselves. When dancing a person can explain a lot to people in their movement rather than struggling to say it. Isadora Duncan says “My Art is just an effort to express the truth of my being in gesture & movement.” Modern Dance is known for being a great way for someone to express themselves emotionally. Things such as shaking some ones hand, lifting a glass in a toast, wave goodbye, or applaud a performer. We are doing some form of movement. We live in a universe of time, space, & dance is a art form invented by human beings to express & convey emotions. It’s profound (Anderson, 2004, pg 8).
There are melodies that when played will cause your heart to droop with sadness for known reason. “In song and dance, man expresses himself as a member of a higher community. He has forgotten how to walk and speak and is on the way into flying into the air, dancing….. his very gesture express enchantment.” It is certainly the case that we can recognize emotions when they are expressed through the moving body and dance. Modern dance encourages other dancers or choreographers to use their emotions or moods to design the steps in the routine.
