How Can I Live The Life Of a True Hero?
The true meaning of the word “hero” has been distorted over time with the media ascribing the word to some individuals who may not deserve the title of a hero. The definition of a hero is “A person, typically a man, who is admired for their courageousness, bravery, compassion and their willingness to sacrifice (Dictionary.com, 2014).” All hero’s and role models have a sense of courageousness. The understanding of a hero can be interpreted in multiple ways, including personal, relational and spiritual. A personal hero is one that you, as an individual, look up to and aspire to be more like. A personal hero is more like a role model as it is a personal opinion on who you look up to. Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
Heroes. Everyone wants to be a hero, but sometimes, people lose sight of what a true hero really is. It does not have to be someone who flies around and saves innocent people from perilous monsters. A hero is simply someone that inspires others. In Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Junior was a hero because he rose above the expectations the world placed on him through his courage, passionate determination, and sympathetic perception.
A typical hero may be described as a superhuman with great, superpowers. Although, my hero can swim, run, and fly, without a cape. Only some hero’s represent courageousness, honor, truthfulness, loyalty, dependability, passion, commitment, dignity, or integrity. My hero does and represents all of them, and will respect all of these traits. A hero is a person who is brave in any conditions. They are proud of what they do and show passion and affection to show it. Hero’s show leadership in any way possible. My hero or admirer are the Marine Corps.
Heroes are found everywhere in the world. They are seen in movies, on television, in books, and in reality. A hero can be anyone, from a friend to a fictional character. To be considered a hero, one must make selfless sacrifices, develop and learn, overcome challenges and temptations, and ultimately present their known world with a gift of any kind. Homer’s

A hero can also be a person who fights for other people to help or save them. from their fears and fears. He opposes the villain - a person who does wicked or intentionally harm others in some way, emotionally or otherwise.
The word "hero" is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someone's life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraway's essay, "'Excremental Assault' in Tim O'Brien: Trauma and Recovery in Vietnam War Literature" and by Vietnam Veteran Jim Carter. Yet these characters became heroes not by going to drastic measures to do something that would draw attention to themselves, but by being true to their own beliefs and by making a difference to the people around them.
What is a hero? The defining characteristics of a hero have changed over time. We can trace heroes all the way back to Ancient Greek mythology. Today, our definition of a hero is much more lax. We use the term hero to describe everyone from civil rights leaders to Instagram-famous celebrities. A hero used to be one who had to endure painful struggle and prove himself and his beliefs to society. Is a hero equivalent to a celebrity now? A quick Google search for “American hero” will lead you to names like Muhammad Ali and Billie Jean King, ahead of any political or civil rights leaders. What does this say about our society? Who is your hero? Many of us can clearly picture our idea of our personal hero in our head, but is the person you consider to be a hero really a hero by definition? In Heroism: Why Heroes are Important, Scott LaBarge, a Classics and Philosophy Professor at Santa Clara University, awakens your thoughts on the word heroism and how it has changed since its origins in ancient Greece. Throughout his essay, he goes in depth into the term ‘hero’ and compares it to society’s take on heroes today. Although LaBarge uses examples to back up his stance that “Today, it is much harder to detach the concept of heroism from morality (LaBarge. 1),” his essay contains flaws and he contradicts his own words.
The word hero as defined as an “individual who has the courage of conviction to perform feats that benefit the general populace, acts as a soldier of virtue, and has an altruistic spirit that urges him or her to act against evil and defend the greater good at all costs, even sacrificing his own well-being or life.” (Harrison 2). Although heroes can come in any shape and size they are commonly found in stories we read, movies we watch, or people we look up to. We do not think about it much but even our own life is made up of many hero’s journeys. We never realize that our hardships and how we overcome them is exactly what a Hero’s Journey is about and why we relate to and enjoy these stories so much. Joseph Campbell defines a hero as “someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Moyers 1). The Hero’s Journey consists of three major parts: the separation, the initiation, and the return. Throughout a character’s journey, they must complete a physical or spiritual deed. A physical deed involves performing a daunting and courageous act that preserves the well-being of another person. A spiritual deed calls for action that improves another individual’s state of mind.
What is a hero? Is a hero someone that is the same for each person, or is it for each person different? Does someone’s hero depend on their perspective? Do all heroes need superpowers or something that puts them above the regular human? While those are arguable one thing is for sure heroes are based of heroism, and heroism is “Great Bravery” as defined by google. A hero is anyone who shows great bravery and is uses courage, a hero can be anybody, there is no true definition of what a true hero, and because it could all change because of your point of view or perspective.
What is a hero? Is it a superhero we see on tv? Or is it an ordinary person doing extraordinary things? A hero can be many things to different people. In Homer’s Odyssey, a character named Telemachus is left to lead his father’s kingdom while he is gone at sea. He had to take on something much bigger than himself even though he wasn’t very prepared. In my journey, I went through something similar. I had to take on something much bigger than myself and learn how to stick up to others when I felt small and not confident. In fourth grade, I was bullied. It was a very hard time in my life, but it has helped shape me into the better person I am today. I learned a lot about myself from this journey. I learned on how to take on anything that was given to me even if I wasn’t prepared. I learned how to stick up for myself and become my own hero.
There is an ever growing dispute in society where some people view others as heroes either when they physically put themselves in danger to defend a cause or to safeguard others, or when they say what they are thinking out loud when others are not brave enough to do so. The recognition of a hero should go to those who are able to stand up for others against the oppressors or conflicts in society by voicing their opinion and by stating the opinions of the people who do not have the courage to do so. However, some may believe that heroes are those who seek danger to protect others or a cause, an example being a firefighter or cop who goes into work every day to protect the people in society, even though they know their lives are in stake. The articles, "Inspired by a hero: What Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life means to me" by La Prensa, "Profiles in Greatness - Gandhi" by Success, and "Nelson Mandela, hero to the world" by New Pittsburgh Courier, support the claim that heroes are those who are the voice for the voiceless. There has been many people in history who have put their lives at stake due to their courage to stand up for others, an example being Martin Luther King, Jr.
There is another type of hero that almost no one is aware of. In the poorest areas of the country, live mostly minorities and other ethic background. All their lives they’ve been expected to work harder and expected not succeed in life. Some individuals living in poverty with a determination to succeed work hard all of their lives to become what everybody doubted they could. Escaping the crime, drugs, and prostitution is enough to escape hell, even if they don’t go to college. Despite of their financial problems, drug and crime surroundings, or difficulties in the language skills, their desire to triumph fuels their persistence. Those who make it to success are the few living examples of the purest form of hero anyone can be. They are not only their own heroes but also the heroes of the poor children who dream of becoming like them someday.
Heroism is defined as an act of courage and an act of selflessness. They reflect the highest levels of morality in society. Heroes have embodied the morality codes of civilizations throughout the ages. When heroes display courage, observers often identify with that courage. The refusal to take the easy way out and the ability to act in spite of fear, is what makes a person a hero. This is the way everyone wishes to react in the midst of a crisis. As witnessed in literature and real life, mankind needs heroes to provide an inspirational role model, an escape from the mundane, and a guide for morality.
