Recommended: Freedom for african americans and women essay

Over 200 hundred years ago, African-Americans wanted freedom from white slave owners. African-Americans were treated so bad that they did not know if they were going to make it though each day. African-Americans were not allowed to attend the same schools, use the same restrooms, and use the same water fountain as whites during that period of time. African-Americans had been enslaved to long, so they were used to whites telling them what to do. However, African- Americans wanted freedom, but they lacked stability at the point in time. African-American was going to need stability, just like they wanted freedom, to make it in society. Take Holly Golightly for example, Holly wants freedom, but she lacks stability, which will help her achieve the freedom she wants. In the story Breakfast At Tiffany by Truman Capote, Holly Golightly is a character who wants freedom rather than having stability throughout her life, but soon Holly will realize that freedom will cost her more than she can handle.

First of all, Holly uses freedom as an opportunity to escape from all of her situation that she is faced with. Freedom for Holly is a way to escape from being a scared and skinny 14—year-old child. Holly wants freedom so bad that she chose to leave her immediate family behind. Holly wants “A new birth of freedom” (Lincoln). In order to get “A new birth of freedom”, Ms. Golightly decides that she wants freedom from her new family, which has taking care of her and her brother. While living with this family Holly does not need to do anything because her children made sure that everything is done around the house. ...ility cause Holly to leave everything behind because she does not want to testify against Sally Tomato. Holly Golightly states, “Testify against my friend I will not” (Capote, 102-03). Freedom made everything easy for Mrs. Golightly to pick up and leave her fabulous life.

Ms. Golightly chose to have freedom instead of having stability. Freedom for Holly is a way to change her circumstances in the way she is living. Ms. Golightly has the foundation that she needs to have a better life, but she wants something much more and better. Freedom and not having stability cause Holly to mistreat her body. Holly receives her freedom that she wants, but it cost her unsuitableness in the long run. The power of freedom can change the world; however, that is why stability needs to be address to make sure that too much freedom will not harm one in the long run.

Fredrick Douglass calls being enslaved an act of “wretchedness,” yet he was able to remain “firm” and eventually left the “chains” of slavery. Fredrick Douglass expresses that being enslaved is a wretched act and that no man should ever deserve such treatment. Despite being a slave, he kept strong and eventually broke the chain of society. However, Fredrick Douglass experienced great “insecurity” and “loneliness” with his new freedom, and was upon a new “hunting-ground.” His new freedom brought other devastating factors, being a new state without any friends, which caused his loneliness. In this new state, he grew insecure for he was in a new danger zone where at any time his freedom could be rejected. With new freedom come new obstacles, which are described in the diction of Fredrick Douglass.

    As the United States developed and grew, upward mobility was central to the American dream. It was the unstated promise that no matter where you started, you had the chance to grow and proceed beyond your initial starting point. In the years following the Civil War, the promise began to fade. People of all races strived to gain the representation, acknowledgement and place in this society. To their great devastation, this hope quickly dwindled. Social rules were set out by the white folk, and nobody could rise above their social standing unless they were seen fit to be part of the white race. The social group to be impacted the most by this “social rule” was the African Americans. Black folk and those who were sympathetic to the idea of equal rights to blacks were targeted by the Ku Klux Klan. (Burton, 1998) The turning point in North Carolina politics was the Wilmington Race Riot of 1898. It was a very bold and outrageous statement from the white supremacists to the black folk. The Democratic white supremacists illegally seized power from the local government and destroyed the neighborhood by driving out the African Americans and turning it from a black-majority to a white-majority city. (Class Discussion 10/3/13) This event developed the idea that even though an African American could climb a ladder to becoming somebody in his or her city, he or she will never become completely autonomous in this nation.
