Abortion is the process of intentionally ending a pregnancy. Abortion touches the hearts of many because its consequences result in the loss of a human life. Its controversy stems from the fact that people’s opinions on this matter are rooted in their value systems, religious beliefs, and political socialization. Its prominence in political discussions today is likely to continue given the relationship between unwanted pregnancies and overpopulation. There is often debate about the constitutionality of abortion, as it is not specifically addressed by any doctrine. As a result, there has never been an explicit national law enacted. This paper will explore the many facets of abortion. For organizational purposes, it will first provide background information and outline a brief history of abortion. Next, it will explore the court cases and social influences that affect abortion, and their role in this controversial topic. Thirdly, it will address both sides of the debate and the justifications offered by both sides. Lastly, it will report the author’s opinion. History of Abortion Abortion has been practiced in all areas of the world since history has been recorded. Its purpose has always been to terminate unwanted pregnancies, or pregnancies that threatened the life of the mother. The first recorded time it was viewed as a crime was in Assyria where women who were found guilty of abortions were left to die. Hebrew law also viewed it as a crime. However, in contrast, Greek law assumed the fetus was part of the woman and it was her choice. (Smitha, 2009) Specifies in arguments about abortion are similar to the arguments had at its foundation. Currently, a majority of states allow abortion under any of the following circumstances: a licensed physician administers the procedure, the life or health of the mother is in danger, or the parents of a minor must give their consent or at least be notified. Government funds for abortions are only available to cases of life endangerment, rape, and incest. (“State Policies in Brief”, 2014) Through many Supreme Court cases, the laws regarding abortions have changed dramatically, leaving both sides feeling both frustrated and validated. Due to the religious influence in politics, this debate will not be solved in a manner that recognizes everyone’s beliefs about how abortion should be approached. Furthermore, this is a topic that will become even more significant due to the exponentially increasing size of our world’s population.
