Ever since kindergarten, I have always been interested in physical education. Physical education (P.E) has always been my favorite class in school because that it has to do with physical exercise and being physically fit.
The purpose of this research is to first define physical education. Then, I will explore the history of P.E. In the following section, I will compare and contrast the PE curriculum from past to present. Next, a description of the schooling requirements to become a physical education teacher will be given. Finally, I will share a reflection of my experience with an actual Physical Education teacher. Being a P.E teacher is the career I want, so why not research and get ahead on things?
What is physical education?
What is physical education? Simply stated, Wikipedia defines it as “Training in the development of and care for the human body.” Everyone needs physical education to keep a healthy body and healthy mind. Some people just do not understand how physical education can help you keep the right mentality. The most important thing about physical education is the curriculum, or how the students are going to be taught. The state of Ohio does not have any specific curricula for elementary, middle school, junior high, and high school physical education. The school districts have the choice of using their own curriculum. The state of Ohio is required to provide physical education to all students from elementary to high school students. Fitness education is extremely important especially in a school setting because it is an integral part of the total education of every child in Kindergarten through Grade 12. Quality physical education programs are needed to increase the physical competence, health-related fitness, self-responsibility and enjoyment of physical activity for all students so that they can be physically. Skill Development develops motor skills, which allow for safe, successful and satisfying participation in physical activities. Self-discipline facilitates development of student responsibility for health and fitness. Improved Judgment quality physical education can influence moral development. Students have the opportunity to assume leadership, cooperate with others; question actions and regulations and accept responsibility for their own behavior.
Physical fitness is defined as being physically fit and healthy. The question that many physical educators are faced with today is; how do to get across the importance of these two factors? This is not always an easy thing to accomplish. When taking a look at the three major levels of school students go through (elementary, secondary and high school) the educator faces some sort of difficulty in teaching the five parts of fitness. This paper will give information concerning these factors and also a few ideas on how to teach these topics to students at various age groups.
Gym class has the obvious benefits of helping kids become healthier and to become in good physical condition. This success may show up on the weight scale, in different clothing sizes, or less visits to the doctor. Not only is there success physically, but gym classes are beneficial to the mind as well. Children who are physically fit absorb and retain new information more effectively than children who are out of shape. This raises the questions about if cutting physical education programs is a wise decision for schools to make. There is an apparent correlation between letting kids by physically active during school and having higher test scores in schools.

Physical Education classes, also known as P.E., phys. ed., or just “gym” classes, are not something many people enjoy. Some people have pretty horrific memories from Middle School, Junior High and/or High School. So, it might not be something students want to repeat during the college experience. That said, there are more than two sides on whether physical education classes should be made mandatory every semester for college students. One side is that they shouldn’t be made mandatory for any college student, any semester. Corollarily physical education classes should be made mandatory for every college student, every semester. Other sides are; some degrees which have a high amount of physical activity should be the only ones required to have physical education classes mandatorily every semester or that physical education classes should be made mandatory, but not ever semester and not for every degree. This essay will focus mainly on the pros and cons of whether mandatory physical education classes should be required for every student, every semester.
Some activity clubs we provide include, dancing, running, jump roping, basketball and soccer clubs, just to name a few. These clubs encourage kids to stay active. Our PE program also sends out monthly newsletters to the parents that give them ways to help their child live a healthy lifestyle. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education states, “Regular physical activity improves functional status and limits disability during the middle and later adult years. Physical activity contributes to quality of life, psychological health, and the ability to meet physical work demands. Physical education can serve as a vehicle for helping students to develop the knowledge, attitudes, motor skills, behavioral skills, and confidence needed to adopt and maintain physically active lifestyles. The outcomes of a quality physical education program include the development of students’ physical competence, health-related fitness, self-esteem, and overall enjoyment of physical activity. These outcomes enable students to make informed decisions and choices about leading a physically active lifestyle. In early years children derive pleasure from movement sensations and experience challenge and joy as they sense a growing competence in their movement ability. Physical education provides a variation of motor skills aimed to enhance the physical, mental, social and emotional development. The obesity statistics of 2009 quantified that childhood obesity rates have more than tripled since 1980 and in addition to concerns regarding chronic diseases, overweight and obesity incidences have even led to poorer levels of academic achievement (Taras & Potts-Datema, 2005). Additionally, in order to teach students the importance of preventing these ailments, those who oppose the amount of time in physical education or want to cut it out altogether should reconsider. Instead, time in physical education should be as equal as core subjects are seen. Physical education can help children in the classroom as well. As stated by AusVELS (n.d.) the “Health and Physical Education domain provides students with the knowledge, skills and behaviours necessary for the pursuit of lifelong involvement in physical activity, health and wellbeing.” In order to provide students with these skills, knowledge and behavior’s the teachers of physical education need to ensure they are developing a well balanced and high quality physical education program. Students from prep through to grade 12 should have the opportunity to participate in a quality physical education program. It is the responsibility of the physical education teachers to develop sound and quality physical education programs that are successful, engaging, inclusive, developmentally appropriate and instructionally powerful so that they are designed to teach students about the importance of leading and maintaining lifelong involvement in physical activity, as well as health and wellbeing (Lambert, 2000).
