French students get 1 ½-2 hour lunch breaks, and many countries including France have off-campus lunch programs, where they can go home or to a restaurant for lunch. Why can’t Oak Creek High School have off-campus lunch? By the time students are in high school, they should be responsible and trusted to have off-campus lunch privileges. To begin, the high school principles and the school district can put restrictions on who’s allowed to leave the campus for lunch. The student’s parents make the ultimate decision of whether they will allow their child to go off-campus for lunch. In order for students to go off-campus, they will need to have a written consent slip filled out by their parents and handed in to the office, as well as a pass when leaving campus. The students who are continuously tardy or absent should not be allowed to have this privilege. If the students are allowed to have off-campus lunch, so should the staff members. Although they’re staff they shouldn’t be treated any different, they should at least have a pass for leaving campus. Most importantly the students of Oak Creek High School should be at least 16 years of age, and must have good grades with a GPA of at least 2.8 or higher. Plus the school resource officers (SRO) may stop and question the students, at any time. Also if Oak Creek High School has off-campus lunch, the school would save more money. By letting the student body have an open campus lunch, the school would be required to spend less money for clean up supplies, equipment, and for maintaining the cafeteria. The less that’s spent and the more that’s saved will allow more money to be available. There could be more money for extra-curricular activities, sports, and clubs. The school would then be held responsible and the parents of that individual could place a law suit on the high school. Most students would love to have off-campus lunch, just like many other students at other schools or in other countries do. If the other schools in the country offer an open-campus lunch, why can’t the Oak Creek High School student body also have an open-campus lunch? With certain restrictions, policies, and rules set, the student body and faculty of Oak Creek High School should be allowed the privilege of an open-campus lunch program. So if the student body is responsible and capable of handling these privileges, why can’t the Oak Creek High School student body and faculty also have an open-campus lunch?
Wandering kids. Bumper to bumper traffic. Drug dealing. Is this the picture drawn when local students have fifty minutes of freedom during lunch to do whatever they please? A closed campus lunch policy means that students can not leave campus to eat and are forced to eat food provided by the district at a price rate which the school chooses. Each year La Mirada and other High Schools alike sell hundreds of lunches a day totalling in thousands of dollars in sales. Money is most likely a major factor in why most schools don’t have an “open campus” lunch policy. Is it right that schools only provide one alternative to bringing a sack of lunch to school when it comes to feeding students at school? To me, a policy such as closed campus lunch is unjust and needs to be revised.

For the majority of high school students having the option to go home for lunch or to go somewhere to eat would be the ultimate dream. High school students do not think about the dangers and worry that open campus lunch would cause for staff and parents. They do not think about the small sum of students who would spend that time doing drugs or making messes at local businesses. There would also be an amount of students who would not return, or they may be late returning to school due to traffic at fast food places. Faculty would also have the fret of an increase of car accidents caused from the limited time students would have to go wherever and get back before their next class. The only way anyone would be allowed off campus is if they had a note from their parents or they called in with an exceptional reason, which is a custom rule in many schools around the nation. The part that is unfair is that no one is even allowed off campus at lunch. This is the part that many students object to and the reason the rule is so dreaded. Some say that they need closed campus for safety. In an article from the New York Times, Mr. Ivan Toper, the principal at White Plains High School, says, “the cafeteria was big enough to accommodate the students remaining on campus.” Mr. Toper goes on to say and, in this case, side with concerning parents, ''Your concerns with their safety against their need for freedom and responsibility.” Some big schools with huge safety issues may very well need the rule because of possible violence within the school and sometimes people come onto campus that aren't students. Another reason schools want to enforce the rule is to reduce car accidents during lunch. Many students are at the age where they can drive and some are still at a young age where they walk. If people who work and takes their cars or even walk to the nearest food stop, what makes people think students couldn't handle it? If anyone thinks that a closed campus rule would stop these people from being rebellious, they are highly mistaken. At State University, the school has a set of certain hours that one is able to go to the cafeteria. However, those hours only comply with the workers and the students no matter what. To many of the students, and others as well, those hours are not compliable to their schedule. Students are left with hunger, having no choice than to be late to class to go buy a snack or go off campus to buy fast food, when not necessary. Not all the students have the same class schedule which should be able to allow different cafeteria hours to comply to everyone's needs, not only certain people.
Throughout high school most students dream of eating Pizza Ranch, or Subway everyday for lunch. However most schools do not allow this opportunity. Students learn and do their best when they are hungry, and uncomfortable! That makes perfect sense right? If you’re like most Americans, this may be one of the most ridiculous statements you have ever heard. I know I have never done anything better hungry. Many students sit through their lunch time at school because they have no food to eat because they don’t have the money to afford it, or they are not able to bring food from home for various reasons. This is why many schools have free and reduced lunch programs. But not everybody can apply for these programs; even middle class families in today’s economy sometimes can’t give their child cash every day. Times are tough, and every family is different. These are good programs, but they are not good enough. One child missing a meal, and going hungry is too many in my book. That’s why I think it should be at least a state law in North Carolina, if not a federal law, that offers free lunch in all public schools for all students, regardless of income. This way it’s simple, cost effective and easy, and nobody will be singled out, or go hungry if they do not bring their lunch from home.
