Newspapers intend to report both sides of the story but it is difficult to withdraw bias completely. Reporters are only human and bring about their own opinions into their work. This can even happen without any realization that the reporter is adding bias from their own perspective. It can be seen more in some works and less in others, depending on the topic. A reporter focusing on an account of the presidency is likely to take it on with a one sided judgment. The actions of President Obama are so controversial that it is hard not to express the news without a tilt in one direction or another. The New York Times tries to hide this unbalanced spectrum but it still can slip in some instances. President Obama is portrayed by the New York Times with viewpoints that express a negative impact for the United States.
The New York Times uses a variety of ways to find information and catch the attention of the reader so people can discover what is going on in the world. However, one sided perspectives can come into play by reporters with or without their knowledge. This can be seen through many aspects like the headline, the tone, the sources used, and even quotes. Just like any newspaper, the employees of the Times work together in a collective manner. The reason for this type of setup is to try to give citizens the best possible way of reporting the news.

As my conclusion of understanding this journey through the history journalism by Kuyperts is that one thing history of newspapers tells us while the structure of the news may change, or the market for the news continues and a formation of highly intelligent journalist will strive to insists that the community receives the type of news that they want to read about.
It is not uncommon to hear people complaining about what they hear on the news. Everyone knows it and the media themselves knows it as well. Some of the most renowned journalists have even covered the the media’s issues in detail. Biased news outlets have flooded everyday news. We find that journalism’s greatest problems lie in the media’s inability for unbiased reporting, the tendency to use the ignorance of their audience to create a story, and their struggles to maintain relevance.
For an example of the authors use of specific examples while describing what the media decides as news worthy the author writes, “The public rarely hears about the routine ceremonies at state dinners, but when President George Bush threw up all over the Japanese prime minister in 1992, the world’s media jumped on the story” (Edwards, Wattenberg, Lineberry, 2015, p. 398). This is an indication of how the media decides what is newsworthy. This quote demonstrates some of the strengths of the article because, not only does the quote support how the media decides what is news worthy, but it also shows no bias and is a factual, specific example. Another quote that demonstrates the strengths of the article is “Journalists and politicians have a symbiotic relationship, with politicians relying on journalists to get their message out and journalists relying on politicians to keep them in the know”. (p.400). this quote demonstrates the strengths of the article because, it shows how the media gets its news, how politicians gains their influence, and shows no bias. Many people believe that liberal media bias is very relevant in this day in age, but really it is just a myth. Conservatives, also known as republicans, tend to forget that most of the American media is influenced heavily by corporate business owners(Schaller 49). Topics such as issues of war and peace, taxes and spending, and government regulation are heavily favorable to the conservatives. A study done by Media Matter for America shows that over sixty percent of U.S. daily newspapers publish conservative journalists rather than liberal(Schaller 49). On the other hand, it is obvious that some hot topics in the news are liberally skewed. Topics such as abortion, gay rights, religion, and gun control are pretty much the only things that have a liberal bias. One of the major problems in the American media today is non-objective reporting which is also known as bias. This has been a trend since the early 1980?s and is very alarming for American citizens who watch the news for truth and honest reporting. Not only has bias been a problem in the broadcast media of ABC, NBC, and CBS, but it has also been a problem in mainstream newspapers such as The New York Times, The Sun, and The Boston Globe. For years, these media outlets have built their reputations on truth and now the trend is to lean left and not tell the whole story. Evidence of this has become very prominent in war coverage and election bias. Bias in the media is a big issue and causes lots of problems throughout the public such as losing trust in a once great source for news, people going elsewhere for information, being ill-informed, and leading to a low voter turnout.
According to James Madison, “nothing could be more irrational than to give the people power and to withhold from them information, without which power is abused,” suggesting that the people have the right to learn popular information and learn both sides of an issue (Paul and Elder 2). However, in modern society, the media often do not present both sides of an issue and are inclined to often mask information for their personal benefits. Therefore, the people often learn and understand only one aspect of an issue and inevitably lean towards the bias present in that news account. Indubitably, the coverage in the mainstream news media influences the majority through its bias and propaganda, especially its partisan audience, which only appreciates one side of the news story. Thus, even though news networks may claim that their news programs and publications are completely factual and credible, their coverage of news events is politically, commercially, and racially biased.

The documentary depicts many relationships that are a part of the New York Times. It shows partnerships between companies such as that with Vice and the Comcast – NBC merger. Additionally, the Times is made possible by a close relationship between its employees. The documentary makes frequent reference to the need for everyone to work well together and how that makes the Times such a great paper. The media is often considered to be biased. The reason for this is because they do not act neutral on the things that they report on. They usually give their point of view and tend to warp the information so it’s easily digestible by the average person. This type of “nugget feeding,” can influence the judgment of some one who has no idea what is going on. The media tends to sensationalize the news by making it seem dramatic, and compelling. This hooks the viewer, and keeps them tuned in. The purpose of this is for ratings, and most importantly money. The media has become less professional, and their morality has gone down hill. The editors/gatekeepers decide what information is sent out for the public to see, and hear. This is another way that the news is shaped for our viewing pleasure.
In the documentary film, Page One: Inside The New York Times, the inner world of journalism is revealed through journalists David Carr and Brian Stelter as the newspaper company The New York Times, struggles to keep alive within a new wave of news journalism. The film is dedicated to reveal the true inner mechanics of what modern day new journalists face on a daily basis and leaves the audience almost in a state of shock. It broadcasts news journalism as yes, an old school method of news generation, but it also highlights an important component that reveals the importance behind this “old school” methodology. We often think that progression always correlates with positive products, but the documentary insists that within the case of modern journalism, the new wave method is actually a detriment that can reap negative consequences.
Every story that makes the front page a paper has to go through a “test” where the editor of that newspaper company decides whether the story is good enough for the front page. The editor makes the decision of whether or not the story is news worthy. The editor uses various different values to help him/her in their decision of what actually goes on the front page. Sometimes this judgment by the editor can be based solely on whether or not the story is going to grasp a lot of readers’ attention which would then boost newspaper sales. Other times the value system that is used is not so vague and meaningless. Some of these values that make stories news worthy are: its news values, prominence of the person or issue being reported on, the amount of impact the story has, whether or not there’s conflict, the novelty of the story, the timeliness, the proximity to the main area of circulation for that newspaper and the relevance and usefulness of the story. One key note is that these values have no hierarchic order and are based on the personal judgment of the editor of that paper. I will analyze three of the major newspapers in New York and point out the values that the editor of these particular newspapers used to decide which story was going to be the top story on Saturday, September 5th. The three newspapers are: The Journal News, New York Post and the Daily News.
In trying to attract new audiences, news media have begun to transition from reporting to becoming a form of entertainment. With the meteoric rise of social media’s role as a news source, the fight for an increase of diversity in the media, and the ever-growing desire of immediate content, the future of responsible journalism is more important than ever. Ask yourself, why do I think the way I do? Where do my political views originate? How do I prove them? Most likely, it is due to the biased portrayal of issues in the media and the politicization that accompanies what we consume. Now, compare your views to your preferred news reporting entity. More than likely, they are the same.
Newsroom structures and practice are crucial in the shaping of news selection. The way in which newsrooms are structured, and the manner with which they operate is at the very core of what news is presented to consumers. The newsroom is one of the most essential organs in the world of journalism; enabling the selection of news most relevant to the demands of consumers. However, the newsroom is not immune to change and adaptation, and it's structures and practice are evolving as technology and other factors combine to alter the preferences of the media-consuming public. The operation of the newsroom must keep pace with these changes in demand, if traditional news media are to retain their place in the market.
