The article “Hands-on and Kinesthetic Activities for Teaching Phonological Awareness” is the study of language being composed of sounds and sounds that can be manipulated. Phonics is one of the primary building blocks of reading and learning. Phonics teaches children to listen more carefully to the sounds that make up each word. The study was performed in two before school programs, both with students in primary grades. The study contained 1 object box and 5 environmental print card games. The environmental game cards consisted of the Stepping Stone Game, Syllabication Object box, Vowel-Change Word Family, The Four-Letter Long Vowel Silent-e Words, and Sorting Words by Vowel Sound Game. This article I chose to write about was written by Audrey C. Rule, Jolene Dockstader, and Roger A. Stewart. The article provided 3 table graphs, 5 examples of Phonics Games, and 6 pages of the data collected to better account for how the experiment played out. This article was published in the Early Childhood Education Journal, which really proved to me that it was an excellent way to learn more about Hands- on Learning and Kinesthetic Activities.

As a Proactive Educator, I would engage in a lot more hands-on learning activities. Not only because they are entertaining and enjoyable, but also because the students would get to be involved with helping one another in the class. By doing more hands on learning in my class, it would make it a more educational learning environment, and hopefully would keep all the students working at the same pace. I will incorporate as many hands on activities I can possibly imagine, to better the young minds of my young students. I would adore knowing that all my students look forward to coming to school because they enjoy my classes, and want to learn what I have to instruct. My ambition is to put my best foot forward; to find more hands on learning activities, and make school and learning a better and more enjoyable place.
However, Curley’s wife isn’t really a tramp, she is just looking for someone to talk to because she is always alone and because she doesn't like her husband. We can see how Curley’s wife feels about Curley on page 78 of Of Mice and Men, where John Steinbeck writes that, “ “Sure I gotta husban’. You all seen him. Swell guy, ain’t he? Spends all his time sayin’ what he’s gonna do to the guys he don’t like, and he don't like nobody. Think I’m gonna stay in that two-by-four house and listen how Curley’s gonna lead with his left twict, and then bring in the ol’ right cross?” ,” Here, we can see how much Curley’s wife dislikes her husband because he is always talking about fighting with someone and also because he apparently can’t get along with anyone. Curley’s wife also expresses throughout the novel that she is so lonely that she will talk to anyone, even Lennie, Crooks, and Candy who are outcasts, and who she describes as “bindle stiffs”. On page 78, John Steinbeck writes that, “She was breathless with indignation, “Sat’day night. Ever’body out doin’ som’pin’. Ever’body! An’ what am I doin’? Standin’ here talkin’ to a bunch of bindle stiffs-a nigger an’ a dum-dum and a lousy ol’ sheep-an’ likin’ it because they ain’t nobody else.”” To sum it up, Curley’s wife feels like she’s hit rock-bottom because she is so lonesome to the point where she is
The first time we see Curley’s wife seek attention occurs when George and Lennie are settling in the bunkhouse. Curley’s wife does this because she wants their attention from the beginning. She already has gotten Lennie’s attention because he keeps on repeating “she purty”, however George managed to resist the temptatio. Often times, Steinbeck also shows that Curley's wife tries to get attention when she wears nice clothes. For example when Curley's wife wore a red dress to get Lennie’s attention because Lennie likes to pet soft things. Curley's wife does this so that she can live the life of an actress. Since being an actress is her dream, Curley's wife was telling Lennie that she “coulda been in the pitchers”. That is also why she wears nice clothes. But sadly her dream was not fulfilled because the letter that was supposed to invite her to the set was never sent to her. So instead of having a nice life Curley's wife is a rancher’s wife.
Curley’s Wife is no exception to this belief of Steinbeck’s. Always wanting to be an actress since a young age, her dreams have been shut down on multiple occasions, mainly by her mother. “I met one of the actors. He says I could go with the show. But my ol’ lady wouldn’ let me. She says because I was on’y fifteen. But the guy says I coulda. If I’d went, I wouldn’t be livin’ like this, you bet.” -(Pg. 88). Being a hopeless dreamer, Curley’s wife dreams of a better life, a life where she weren’t lonely and despised by the men of the ranch. Even with her being married, it made no difference. Curley didn’t provide any love or affection to his wife. Unfortunately her loneliness is was lead Curley’s wife to her demise. All she wanted was a friend, and in the end, she never got one.
Many people would argue Curley’s wife is the weakest character in Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. Although, her interactions with the workers on the farm show how powerful she really is: “Well, you keep your place then, n*****. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain’t even funny” (81). Considering her brash tone with Crooks, Curley’s wife knows her boundaries, as well as what she is capable of. The ranchers are aware of her connections with The Boss and Curley and are careful not to push her limits, because of the trouble they could get themselves into. Additionally, The Boss’ daughter-in-law can be highly convincing and very persuasive when she is eager to achieve something. For example: “Tell an’ be damned,” she cried. “Nobody’d
For example, she is countlessly called a “tart” and “jailbait” by some of the ranch workers. The workers call her offensive names because she flaunted her legs, pushed her shoulders back and pushed out her chest in front of the workers (Steinbeck 31). These actions could make it seem like she is interested in the other men and is being unloyal to Curley. Curley’s wife is alone often since she lives on a ranch with all men and no friends. In the text, when Curley’s wife goes into Crook’s room to talk the guys, she says, “Well, I ain’t giving you no trouble. Think I don’t like to talk to somebody ever once in awhile? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?” ( Steinbeck 77). This quotation is important because it shows that Curley’s wife is just a lonely girl and wants someone to talk to her and give her attention. The readers initial portrayal of Curley's wife shows her to be a mean and seductive temptress. She is paralleled to eve from the bible. The same way eve tempted Adam, Curley's wife destroyed the dream of george and Lennie owning land. As we go through the book, she show she is actually just misunderstood and wants to be noticed. Curley’s Wife in ‘Of Mice and Men’ is used cleverly by Steinbeck to create sympathy amid the reader but also to represent the position of women in 1930s America. Through an intelligently designed pattern of events in the book, we feel varying amounts of sympathy for Curley’s Wife and thus unconsciously acquire information regarding the issues women had to face in the 1930s. In this essay I will evaluate the extent that Steinbeck presents Curley’s Wife as a sympathetic character and its relation to 1930s America.
Curley’s wife represents every woman in society who is insecure in life in someway; therefore, eroding people and society’s trust. Meaning they are lead by their insecurities to do things that they shouldn’t do; therefore, causing people and society to lose trust in the insecure person. Specifically, Curley’s wife is insecure because of how her life is rather than how it could’ve been. Subsequently, this leads to regret, which is contagious like the flu: regret leads to her doing things and acting out in ways that she shouldn’t; therefore, she is receiving attention from others. Life is full of choices: where to go to school, where to live, who to marry, and what jobs to apply for, and most of the time each of us control what happens with these choices. What if those choices brought someone to the point of being trapped and feeling helpless? In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck the wife of Curley is in just that spot. She made the choice to marry a tyrant of a man and is now forced to live with the consequences of her decisions. Curley’s Wife is misunderstood due to the workers’ assumptions, Curley’s relationship with her, and her unclear background.
Phonological awareness (PA) involves a broad range of skills; This includes being able to identify and manipulate units of language, breaking (separating) words down into syllables and phonemes and being aware of rhymes and onset and rime units. An individual with knowledge of the phonological structure of words is considered phonologically aware. A relationship has been formed between Phonological awareness and literacy which has subsequently resulted in Phonological awareness tasks and interventions.This relationship in particular is seen to develop during early childhood and onwards (Lundberg, Olofsson & Wall 1980). The link between PA and reading is seen to be stronger during these years also (Engen & Holen 2002). As a result Phonological awareness assessments are currently viewed as both a weighted and trusted predictor of a child's reading and spelling and ability.
I will teach to the objectives and I will teach to the standards. I will make sure that my lessons are hitting on as many standards as possible.
What would life be like for Sally if she told someone or got help from her abusive father? What would happen to Curley’s wife if she waited to find someone she loved to marry? Why didn’t Sally and Curley’s wife just talk to someone about how they felt? Throughout the book The House on Mango Street, the character Sally is, at first look, seen as a popular, immature, and inappropriate girl. Meanwhile in Of Mice and Men, another character, Curley’s wife, has a similar image because of her poor decisions. However a closer look shows that, although many people think Sally and Curley’s wife are irresponsible and immature they make bad choices do to them trying to avoid their families, their rush to find love, and their lonely lives.
According to Bursuck & Damer (2011) phonemes are “the smallest individual sounds in words spoken.” Phonemic awareness is the “ability to hear the phonemes and manipulate the sounds” (p. 41). Phonemic awareness is essential because without the ability students are not able to manipulate the sounds. According to the National Institute for Literacy (2007), “students with poor phonics skills prevent themselves from reading grade-level text and are unable to build their vocabulary” (p.5) Agreeing with the importance of phonemic awareness, Shapiro and Solity attempted to use whole class instruction to improve students’ phonological awareness. The intervention showed that whole class instruction assisted not only the students with poor phonemic awareness, but also on-level developing readers.
One strategy to promote this skill is by having a word box with different objects or toys for children to select from. Invite children to select something from the box, and clap out the syllables of their object. For example, a child claps to pen-cil which has two syllables (hill, 2006, p.152). It is easier for children to hear big chunks of words with one or two syllable to learn first. By children becoming aware of syllables, it helps them to write and read compound words with several syllables. This can lead children to read more complex and interesting texts of their choice by using the skills they have learnt. Phonemic awareness is a key skill for students to learn as it can help children sound out and decode words they may not be able to read fluently and can lead to vocabulary improvement as they are able to sound out and read more
As a future educator, I have many goals. My first goal would be to never overpower my students. Being a teacher should not be a job, it should be a passion. I will focus my classroom around the student’s needs, rather than my own. The classroom will revolve around the students. I will be their guiding hand through education.
