Different types of habits are one of the main components in sculpting and defining an individual’s character. Through one’s habits, others have the capability of grasping more of who the person really is and what he or she is really like. In our world today, many individuals strive to become highly successful and effective in their own societies. With that, they must work towards shaping themselves by acquiring certain qualities and characteristics.

Proactivity is an essential component that greatly influences the decisions us as individuals make in life. Being proactive is defined as a habit where one must take initiative and become responsible. Proactive people have the proclivity to choose their responses and actions despite their surroundings. They are generally very optimistic and driven to make things happen. This type of habit eventually leads to a result that the person is satisfied with. Covey suggests that the people who end up having good professions are the ones that are proactive. These people take the initiative to do whatever they can in order to successfully get the job done. As for me, during my senior year of high school, the class of 2011 suffered so much academically as the country grew to become unstable due to violent protesting. This resulted in not having school for weeks due to the severity and the seriousness of the situation. Unfortunately, the IB examinations were only months away and students had to be prepared. Despite the instability of my surroundings, I started to take full initiative and responsibility in my studies by seeking alternative ways of help in order to earn the diploma that I have been diligently working for.

Being proactive, putting first things first, seeking first to understand, then to be understood, synergizing, and sharpening the saw are five of the seven fundamental habits that Covey discusses in his book. I chose these five habits as I found them to have played a significant role in my past experiences. Hopefully, I will be able to incorporate them in the future whether in work or with people around me. After reading through this intriguing and informative book, I learned that with each habit comes something crucial. These valuable habits will hopefully help shape me into an effective person in the future.
