Introduction
Over the years boys and girls grow at a constant pace, which is considered to be “normal.” There are many factors that influence a child’s height, such as their gender, genetics, nutrition, physical activity, present health problems, etc. Evidently, “Normal” growth does not have an exact approximation by how much a child grows but explains what factors influence a normal growth rate. These factors include healthy eating, exercise and enough sleep. If a child remains active in these three factors, they will most likely grow at a normal rate.
Eventually, puberty catches up to both boys and girls. During this time their body changes and they will grow a bit more before they stop growing. A girl will reach her adulthood by the age of 15 or 16, depending on when puberty started. Therefore, it may be later on because it has been said that a girl stops growing when she reaches the age of 18 (not always true). A thing that can be noticeable is that during a younger age, girls seem to be somewhat taller than guys. As a male gets older though, around the ages of 12 to 15, he will grow most quickly. Boys have been said to grow until the age of 21, a lot slower that is. With current information it’s not very difficult to determine why most guys are taller than girls.
Essentially, genetics can be a very useful and important role in determining the growth of a person. If a boy or girl has short parents then they will most likely be short as well. The opposite is possible as well. If one parent is tall and the other short then it can be somewhat difficult to tell if the child while be short or tall unless additional information can be observed, such as genetics.

Puberty is defined as the beginning of sexual maturity. It is the period when a child changes physically, hormonally, sexually, and is able to reproduce. For girls, puberty begins around ages ten or eleven and ends around age sixteen. Boys enter puberty later than girls, usually around age twelve, and it lasts until around ages sixteen or seventeen (Parents & Teachers: Teen Growth & Development, Years 11 to 14). Precocious puberty means having development of breasts or testes, menstrual bleeding, pubic and underarm hair, body odor, and an increased growth rate earlier than normal. For girls, puberty is generally considered to be too early if it begins at age seven or eight. African-American and Hispanic girls tend to start puberty slightly earlier than Caucasian girls. In conclusion, genetics play an important role in the development of a child in light of the transfer of genes from parents to offspring. Even though a child inherits several genes from the two parents, his/her ability to express these factors is dependent on gene-gene and gene-environment interactions.
