Greenhouse Effect
This Earth is getting older and older. Can you imagine what life will be like if the temperature in the Earth keeps on rising due to the excessive amount of heat trapped in the atmosphere? No one would want that to happen. The atmosphere plays an important role in our daily life. It keeps the Earth warm, which is also known as the greenhouse effect. Due to ozone depletion and global warming, the atmosphere is not able to function normally like how it used to. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests contributed and intensified the greenhouse effect. These activities also lead changes to the Earth’s climate. We live on this Earth and it is important for us to prevent the Earth from further damage caused by the greenhouse effect. It is our job to protect our beloved Earth. To save this Earth, we should learn what greenhouse effect is, what cause it, what the impact is, and the steps or ways to prevent it.
The process where the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap heat to keep the temperature of the Earth warm is called the greenhouse effect. The Earth takes up the energy that is radiated by the sunlight and cools down by releasing a different form of energy called infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases in our atmosphere act almost like a blanket between the earth and frigid space. At lower levels, greenhouse gases trap some heat in our atmosphere while letting other heat radiate out into space. However, as the layer of greenhouse gases around our planet grows thicker more heat is trapped in our atmosphere, less radiates away and the earth slowly heats up.
Think about a time when your car was parked on the side of the street all day long. Then you decide to run to the store and get some things for dinner. The minute you opened the car door, you feel the currents of hot air blowing past you, and when you sit down, you feel as if your car is radiating heat! This is a tiny, yet real example of the process called the greenhouse effect. This effect includes a form of matter, absorbing heat or radiation from the sun. What happened in the car was the glass assists the absorption of the heat and trapped the heat inside, containing it. Equally, the earth's atmosphere contains gases called greenhouse gases such as Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and water vapor, which absorbs the rays we receive from the sun, and trap the heat inside. Our atmosphere, which contains the greenhouse gases acts like a blanket; absorbing the heat from the sun, and preventing it from going away from the earth's surface. The more the heat gets trapped because of the increase in greenhouse gases, the more the temperature rises, causing global warming. Global warming is “an increase in the earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from pollution,” (Merriam Webster Dictionary). The two main causes of global warming are the greenhouse effect and solar variations. The Greenhouse Effect “refers to the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation atmosphere gases (mainly Greenhouse gases such as CO, NO, and Carbon Monoxide) warms the Earth’s atmosphere and surface,” (Merriam Webster Dictionary).Solar Variations are “changes in the amount of radiant energy emitted by the Sun,” (Wikipedia).
The greenhouse effect is known as the rising in earth's temperature above from its normal temperature. In the atmosphere, there are certain gases, such as methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides, water vapor, and ozone, which aid in this activity by reflecting the heat back to earth. Because of this process earth can maintain a suitable temperature. Around 57 degrees Fahrenheit, which are considered to be a normal temperature. Over the past years, planet Earth has been warming up. According to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, average temperatures have risen around1.4 degrees Fahrenheit/0.8 degrees Celsius since 1880. In fact, the rate of warming is increasing. It was reported by a number of climate studies that the last two decades were the hottest in 400 years. Global warming is a major threat to the planet. It is agreed that humans have caused most of the past century's warming by releasing greenhouse gasses, as we power our electronic lives. The “greenhouse effect” is performed when the gasses let out into Earth’s atmosphere trap heat from the sun. Through the burning of fossil fuels, humans are enhancing the greenhouse effect and increasing the temperatures of the planet. Although the greenhouse effect is what keeps the planet warm, thereby supporting life, too much would also result in severe issues. Now, with the increasing rate of greenhouse gases emissions, frozen glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, and wildlife is scrambling to keep up with the fast pace. Above that, weather can also become more and more extreme. Something has to be done.
An analogy of a greenhouse effect is the effect that you get when you go to the beach in a hot summer day and you leave your car with the windows closed. After you come back and open the car door you get a furnacelike blast of heat in your face. Inside the car everything is too hot to touch. This is similar to what the earth experiences when heat enters the atmosphere and is not reflected back.

The greenhouse effect is one of the main reasons that the earth is the perfect place to live on. The greenhouse effect results from the heat energy of sunlight being absorbed by the Earth and molecules in the Earth's atmosphere ( Figure 1 ) . This energy is usually radiated back towards space.
