The Victorian Period of British History is primarily known as the period of Queen Victoria's reign, which spanned from 1837 to 1901. During the Victorian Period, Britain was under a long period of peace, prosperity, and the nation had great self-confidence. England was under great prosperity with great population increase during this period, in addition, England had also achieved great expectations in architecture. Many great structures were designed and constructed during the Victorian Period, with the architecture movement of Gothic Revival architecture. Two structures designed and constructed during the Victorian Period was the Palace of Westminster and the Victoria Building apart of the University of Liverpool.
The Palace of Westminster today is where the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords which are the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom occur. Instead of being called the Palace of Westminster today, the building is knows as the “Houses of Parliament” as this is a government building used by both parties. The palace was built after the “old palace” was destroyed by a fire in 1834. Sir Charles Barry constructed the building still standing today, which he started in 1840. The building took over 30 years to construct as there were many delays such as cost overruns and even the death of the lead architect. The palace was completed in 1870 and has been a “House for Parliament” since 1870. However, since 1870 many extensive repairs have been made, such as the reconstruction of the Commons Chamber following its bombing in 1941. ... the administration moved from the Victoria Building into the Senate House. In 2008,the building was then converted into the Victoria Gallery and Museum which shows that this structure now does not purpose originally for the intended purpose.
As the Victorian Period occurred during the reign of Queen Victoria, there was great peace and prosperity for England throughout. Areas such as art, science, religion, medicine, technology, and especially architecture progressed greatly through the Victorian Period. Great structures were designed and constructed that consisted of bridges, railway stations, churches, government buildings and schools which all show that prosperity of England during the Victorian Period. The Victoria Building of the University of Liverpool and the Palace of Westminster both show how Gothic Revival Art was significant during the Victorian Period.
