The Grapes of Wrath is set in the 1930’s during the awful Dust Bowl. It is a time where most people are living under desperate conditions, and no matter where they go and what they do, it does not get any better. They strive for something better, for themselves and for others, but unfortunately they are just another needy family. In the struggle of defending their honor and keeping their faith while battling for survival, the Joad family in John Steinbeck’s novel is met with inhumanity and prejudice. On their journey to the land of promise, also known as California, the Joad family manages to keep their faith and good hope. Even though their spiritual self is tested multiple times, they manage stay together even in the worst of times. They got through several deaths and were close to starving, but they were forced to keep fighting for the remaining family. Even the preacher, Jim Casy, lost his faith, but it was not gone.
