According to Collins
In his book, Good to Great, Jim Collins gives a detailed comparison between companies that are able to excel continually in their field and companies that are either mediocre or one hit wonders. Through their research his team was able to find distinct characteristics having to do with leadership, planning or purpose, human and technological resources, and discipline that differentiate the great businesses from the ordinary ones. Some of the main ideas that Collins’ focuses on are the Level 5 leader, the Hedgehog Concept and the Culture of Discipline, which all fit together to transform a simply good business into one that has long lasting cumulative returns much higher than that of the market (8). These ideas are what form Collins’ model of management based on their application to planning, organizing, leadership and control, of which many have connection with the theories of previous authors such as Deming, Anderson, and Stack. Like some of these authors, Collins’ model is based on a transformation, however his transformation is not based on a fast acting catalyst, instead it focuses on finding the right product, understanding it, and then building momentum around it that will eventually take the company to the top. Once a company becomes great, Collins’ describes how certain aspects of the company must remain the same, specifically the discipline towards the planned focus of the company, while others, such as strategy and operating practices must adapt to changes (197).

Throughout his book, Collins shows us that when all of these different functions of management are applied, the success of the business should be set in motion. He also proves that as long as the company continues to do what makes it successful when it will build momentum until it becomes great. Once the business has become great, it should be very simple to keep it that way as long as the disciplined culture continues to focus the business’s energies. However most of this depends on the leaders within the company, and whether or not they are willing to apply the concepts of this book and become level five leaders, that are successful for the company as a whole and not just themselves.

Collins states that the most critical factor in the development of the company from being "good" into "great" one is to implement strategy of Level 5 leader. According to the book, such individual needs to be able to skilfully integrate critical factors and create the path for success . Ideal Level 5 leader must be able to unite traditional quiet humility with the deference to the greater well-being of the company in place of the personal benefits. This leader can inspire every single member of the company to achieve own personal level of "greatness."
This book is important to business students because it shows that even the most seasoned executive runs into unexpected challenges and can find themselves in uncharted territory. Jim Barton’s experiences and lessons can be lessons for anyone. Any employee, whether they are support staff or a top executive, should always maintain an open mind and be ready to learn from a situation or the people around them at any time.

The focal point of this paper will be to identify the current CEO of Sears Holdings, and gain insight on his background, i.e., training, education, and previous employment. Leaders: Strategies for Taking Charge is an organizational management book written by Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus for those who aim to become better leaders. The authors emphasize that having executive positions or being a manager does not automatically make one a leader. A leader is one who inspires his staff, help them find purpose in their work, and effectively implement their plans. They separate the book not quite into chapters on different topics, but rather by four strategies that they have determined are vital for any leader to take on. The strategies are effectively concluded as attention through vision, meaning through communication, trust through positioning, and the deployment of self. Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
Good to Great: Responding to Change. I think that Jim Collins' book is essential for future entrepreneurs, managers, and leaders in the Philippines. The tips given by the author are useful in the dynamic, ever-changing, and constantly fluctuating business environment of the Philippines. Jim Collins described the kind of leader who can address these changes as a Level 5 leader "a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will." The Level 5 leader is not the "corporate savior" or "turnaround expert". Most of the CEOs of the Good To Great companies as they made the transition were company insiders. They were more concerned about what they could "build, create and contribute" than what they could "get - fame, fortune, adulation, power, whatever". No Ken Lay of Enron or Carly Fiorina of HP, the larger-than-life CEO, led a Good To Great company. This kind of executive is "concerned more with their own reputation for personal greatness" than they are with "setting the company up for success in the next generation". Transformations from Good to Great start when a company finds a CEO who is humble but iron-willed, and who is ambitious for the company, not necessarily for himself or herself.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
Great companies first focus on choosing people who will benefit the company in the short run and in the long run. They focus on getting the right people on the team while getting the wrong people off before setting up the platform as to where the company will move towards. The right people are those who don't need to be tightly managed or persuaded in order for them to perform at the best of their abilities. They are self-motivated and willing to give their best work to create or be part of something important. When choosing the right person, great companies look not only for specific knowledge and skill, but also evaluate the innate capabilities, values, and traits of the person. Choosing the right people is also applicable at the higher level positions of a great company. The leaders of these great companies are not focused on the celebrity aspect of their position, but rather are incredibly humble and totally dedicated to developing excellence in their organization. They credit success to factors other than themselves and take the blame when things go wrong. Great leaders also have a unique way to deal with their employees. They create a legitimate and personal relationship with their employees that results in employee awareness of when they are being an asset to the company or when they are not performing to standards. Leaders must not hesitate to deal with low performers and take whatever means necessary to ensure that only high performing people are involved in reaching the goals of the company. In essence, a leader's way of promoting hard work, communicating high expectations, and serving as a source of drive and inspiration contributes to the overall success of any great company.
In the twenty first century, leaders are required to build a greater impression in which people believe in strategy, trust in management decisions, and trust in their work. Once people believe in management choice, there will be enthusiasm inside an organisation. Such an environment helps the organisation growing or flourish.
