The Glass-Ceiling in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter
The portrayal of female characters in British literature has most often reflected the larger perception of women by society during the time of a work’s publication. In this regard, the immensely popular Harry Potter series written by author J.K. Rowling is certainly no exception. The circumstances for women in late 20th century Britain have improved and in many ways are nearing equality with men, yet a notable upper barrier to success still remains. Rowling captures this gender dynamic throughout the Harry Potter series by including a diverse cast of resilient female characters who are not allowed to take on the same leadership roles dominated by the men at Hogwarts, at the Ministry of Magic, in quidditch, and during the Triwizard tournament. The novels also center on an important theme of motherly love that Rowling uses to explore the sacrifices women must make in order to raise their children well. Such issues have been present in British literature for well over a century, with each generation seeing steps toward equality, both for the fictitious characters and the women of a given time period. The Harry Potter series, therefore, constitutes a reflection of female status in modern Britain that has advanced, but remains perpetually flawed.

Rowling’s Harry Potter series typically features a social, educational, and physical dangers of school life that provide opportunities for adventure, mischief, and exploration. This collection of experiences allows boys to enact traditional forms of boyhood while practicing many of adult men’s culture and the ability to plan out schemes. Children’s literature of the Nineteenth Century is notoriously known for its projection of expected Victorian gender roles upon its young readers. Male and female characters were often given specific duties, reactions, and characteristics that reflected society’s particular attitudes and moral beliefs onto the upcoming citizens of the empire. These embedded concepts helped to encourage nationality and guide children towards their specific gender roles which would ensure the kingdom’s future success. It is known by many that, in regards to literature coming out of the South, female characters traditionally do not receive as much attention or detail as their male counterparts. Harry Crews does not, as one might say, “stray far from the path” of male dominated prose. However, this is not to say that there are only few women present in his writing, in fact quite the contrary. Women are not only present in Crews’s work, they are vividly entwined with the experiences and fiery outcomes of his male protagonist’s journeys; and A Feast of Snakes is no different. In “Having a Hard Time of it: Women in the Novels of Harry Crews,” an essay written by Elise S. Lake, Lake examines that even though some may interpret Crews as using women strictly in disrespectful or obscene ways for the advancement of his male characters, that “sheer variety disputes the notion that Crews stereotypes women narrowly” (84). We see a multitude of angles and personalities in A Feast of Snakes alone, including: Lottie Mae and Beeder acting as an empathy release valve; the abused wife, Elfie; the ultimate cheerleader/ catalyst, Berenice; and finally the vicious sexual icons Hard Candy and Susan Gender.
Feminism is the conviction that members of both the male and female gender should be treated equally in all situations in political, economic and socio-cultural settings. It involves activities put in place in support of the interests and just treatment of females. One major way through which feminism manifests itself in the society today is through books and movies. Authors and movie directors depict feminist in their works by using events and characters to bring out how women are looked at and treated in the society. This sexism can be seen in the gender lines throughout the Harry Potter series. The Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling, follows a young boy named Harry Potter who learns he is a wizard and goes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry is known as "The Boy Who Lived" after surviving an attack from the Dark Lord, Lord Voldemort. The series follows Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione, on their years at Hogwarts and culminates in fight between Harry and Lord Voldemort. Despite being written in the late 20th and early 21st century, Harry Potter continues sexism which the series portrays through its female characters of Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley. Hermione Granger is a witch Harry meets on his way to Hogwarts. Hermione is by far the brightest student at Hogwarts and is considered a "know-it-all". Despite being the smartest student at Hogwarts, Hermione 's abilities are seen as secondary to the one of the boy 's. The boys are seen as the brave and strong ones while the girls are always seeking for help. In the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer 's Stone, after a troll gets lose in the school, Hermione is seen "shrinking against the wall ... looking as if she was about to faint." (Rowling, "HP and the Sorcerer 's Stone" 140) Harry and Ron then save her from the troll before anyone is hurt. Throughout the book, Hermione is seen as only good for her book smarts despite being an excellent witch. Hermione has to prove herself to Harry and Ron and they only appreciate her for her knowledge. Hermione most likely does not need to the help of Harry and Ron, especially since the spell Ron used to save her from the troll was the one she taught to Ron. It is a sexist notion that the girl 's are always the "damsel-in-distress" and are not able to save themselves. This could occur since the story is seen through Harry 's eyes which relegates Hermione to

Particularly in Britain, its “overarching patriarchal model” (Marsh) had “reserved power and privilege for men” (Marsh). Throughout literature, authors employ a variety of strategies to highlight the central message being conveyed to the audience. Analyzing pieces of literature through the gender critics lens accentuates what the author believes to be masculine or feminine and that society and culture determines the gender responsibility of an individual. “Girls wear jeans and cut their hair short and wear shirts and boots because it is okay to be a boy; for a girl it is like promotion. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, according to you, because secretly you believe that being a girl is degrading” (McEwan 55-56). Throughout the history of literature women have been viewed as inferior to men, but as time has progressed the idealistic views of how women perceive themselves has changed. In earlier literature women took the role of being the “housewife” or the household caretaker for the family while the men provided for the family. Women were hardly mentioned in the workforce and always held a spot under their husband’s wing. Women were viewed as a calm and caring character in many stories, poems, and novels in the early time period of literature. During the early time period of literature, women who opposed the common role were often times put to shame or viewed as rebels. As literature progresses through the decades and centuries, very little, but noticeable change begins to appear in perspective to the common role of women. Women were more often seen as a main character in a story setting as the literary period advanced. Around the nineteenth century women were beginning to break away from the social norms of society. Society had created a subservient role for women, which did not allow women to stand up for what they believe in. As the role of women in literature evolves, so does their views on the workforce environment and their own independence. Throughout the history of the world, British, and American literature, women have evolved to become more independent, self-reliant, and have learned to emphasize their self-worth.
